Just to clarify a point discussed above. Impeachment by itself will NOT disqualify Scrotus from running for office. He must be impeached in the House AND REMOVED FROM OFFICE by the Senate for that to happen.

Being a convicted criminal is not a bar from holding office either unless the conviction is for treason, sedition, or 'crimes against the United States'.

So unless he is removed from office by the Senate, Scrotus will be perfectly free to run in 2024. And since none of the expected criminal cases awaiting him are for crimes against the US, no bar to office there.

But honestly, at this point I don't think the GOP by and large would run him for dog catcher. However, I do expect to see the formation of an 'official' MAGA political party with him at the head.

Okay the "vast majority" of Americans do not think America is amazing and the rest of the world sucks. It probably seems that way in some parts of the country but definitely not in others.

I see it as a third of the country is irredeemably racist and fascist, a third of the country is the total opposite (e.g. Dems in the coastal cities) and a third of the country is up for grabs.

Not so different from other countries, France especially comes to mind.

Roussette · 07/01/2021 20:26

As far as Pence... whilst I don't wish anything violent on anyone, has it taken till yesterday to realise that Trump only protects Trump.. the fact his family were in the Capitol building with him must've been very frightening, but he enabled Trump for four years. So little sympathy. I hope he becomes a complete irrelevance after inauguration

Why were they shouting 'fuck mike pence'?

dreamingbohemian · 07/01/2021 20:27

Trump is not running again. He's going to die in a New York State correctional facility. They are ready to go if the feds aren't.

user1471565182 · 07/01/2021 20:27

I dont give a single shit if he felt 'frightened'. He encouraged this again and again and then ran to hide with the rest of the republicans. Completely pathetic.

user1471565182 · 07/01/2021 20:30

In two attempts Trump hasnt come close to winning a popular vote, with diminishing returns. Why would the republicans want him to run again? Will he even be alive in 4 years?

Roussette · 07/01/2021 20:30

Why were they shouting 'fuck mike pence'?

Because come the end he didn't agree with Trump that the election was stolen, and wouldn't bow to pressure from him to overturn results

Roussette · 07/01/2021 20:32

I do agree user, I was thinking of his children being there really. He's a cowardly snake and where is he now? Resignations, 25th amendment, impeachment etc... nothing from him

From Trump's niece

Mary L Trump
@MaryLTrump
Democracy didn’t prevail yesterday, it was knee-capped after 4 long years of being pushed to the breaking point. It will survive only if Donald and his fellow seditionists in Congress are removed from office. Now. Otherwise they’ll try it again—and next time they’ll succeed.

OP posts:
Janonomouse · 07/01/2021 20:37

Mary Trump is right, of course.

I don't see how America can remain a credible bastion of democracy if it does not remove a President who incited a terrorist attack against it's own government.

redcandlelight · 07/01/2021 20:37

@user1471565182

Thats true maths, it never fails to amaze me the amount of people from the US who are willing to openly (and unsolicited) spout about america being 'the greatest country in the world'. It would never occur to some of them that it can seem like an authoritarian place to the rest of the western world. Seems to be just under half the population though. Maybe the coastal bits should actually secede and join Canada.

I also find the hooting about how great 1776 was and all that a bit strange when the alternative would have been somewhere exactly like Canada.

I was on holiday in new york (state) in september. heard quite a few 'how can 'they' do that to us? we never hurt anyone'

also 'vietnam is now a peaceful country therefore we won'

redcandlelight · 07/01/2021 20:40

september 2001, that is.

user1471565182 · 07/01/2021 20:45

Yeah ive heard some bizarre ones about vietnam. Supposedy abandoning everything, burning documents and running from your embassy in helicopters whilst enemy tanks take over the capital city isnt losing.

Tellmetruth4 · 07/01/2021 20:46

People have been warning about the radicalisation of susceptible white people for years but the governments on both sides of the pond have ignored this. There are dark forces on the net focused on turning people into terrorists.

What happened yesterday was inevitable but I fear it’s just the beginning. The domestic terrorists are armed and dangerous. Just like Islamic terrorists they believe their cause is just. The POTUS fanned the flames and has let out a genie that can’t be forced back in in the short term. It will take years of de-radicalisation programmes, prevention schemes, prison sentences, sanctions against talk radio and other vectors for radicalisation. They will eventually turn on him and his family.

hansgrueber · 07/01/2021 20:51

@Lonelycrab

Pmk

Hopefully this will mean the GOP finally stands up to these extremist thugs. Anyone with half an ounce of decency will be horrified by what went on. And the ones that condone it will be seen for what they are: a dangerous group attempting to install a dictator. Maybe that’s fanciful but I hope it wakes people up (in the RP) to the dangers that people like Trump bring.

I don't think that the GOP can control them, they are way too far to the right and I believe that the USA is in a very dangerous place at the moment.

Has anybody else seen The Brainwashing of my Dad?

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/01/2021 20:54

Apologies if this has been shared already. Trump's bunker. Apparently filmed before he went out to address the "patriots"

Soopermum1 · 07/01/2021 20:54

I've got that 'Gloria' song that was playing at Trump's party in his tent, in my head now.

Fuck you Trump.

I see everyone is silent on Twitter except Rudy. Lin Wood's been kicked off Twitter altogether

hansgrueber · 07/01/2021 20:56

@Igotjelly

Anyone know if he is able to run again if he isn't impeached but he subsequently convicted of something?
I don't think even he's that delusional to run again but I do think that he will try and promote Ivnaka and through her keep a hold on the reins. Depending upon what any subsequent conviction might be I think he could run again and, despite everything, there is still a lot of support for him among people who genuinely believe he was robbed.
pleasefeedthecat · 07/01/2021 21:04

What are the chances of him being sent to jail?

Veronica12345 · 07/01/2021 21:11

His behaviour is extraordinary. His disregard for conventions or rules is breathtaking. And the fact he's got away with it for so long. is an indictment of the system and the people who think he's a hero. The Russians and Chinese must be thrilled with the latest scenes. One or other could almost be testing how hard it would be to infiltrate the very heart of the nation. It's like he's played into their hands. Could it be deliberate? Or is he just incapable? Either would be grounds for immediate removal before he does more malicious damage.

mathanxiety · 07/01/2021 21:12

The Democrats have a massive interest in reducing Gerrymandering and increasing Electoral participation (redistricting will increase the number of State seats they hold)

So I see good reasons why they will push ahead with it.

@ListeningQuietly
The drawing of electoral districts is a prerogative of the States, not the Federal government, though challenges to redrawn boundaries can go as far as federal courts. It can be a long drawn out process and is usually characterised by bitter contentiousness and a high degree of partisanship.

ListeningQuietly · 07/01/2021 21:15

Math
I have family in what was PA8
I know how contentious it can be
but I also know that Federal pressure and exposure can work wonders
and the world IS watching
