Also...

'The FBI is setting up a website. It will contain the pictures of everyone who breached the capital yesterday.
The FBI is asking for the public’s help in identifying these people.'

It will be on Twitter.

fancy that !
Furries · 07/01/2021 17:29

Google come up with a German signal flag when searching for white flag with red border. Was it that?

DuncinToffee · 07/01/2021 17:29

Roussette Furries, yes the footage would be from before the rally, I can't imagine Trump would be taken to a tent to keep him safe.

Still a disgusting family

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 07/01/2021 17:29

No, "disenfranchised" in Trump's terms means not being allowed to exert white male privilege over the whole of the voting population so that only white male (and white females in their thrall) votes are allowed to count towards the winner.
Did I mention I'm pissed off with this whole thing?

TurquoiseBaubles · 07/01/2021 17:30

Has this been posted here yet? Apologies if it has, I can't keep up with the threads! Half a dozen police left on their own vs a mob.

Having seen that I think the security people on duty were right to just let the rioters in. To do otherwise would have been suicide. The issue isn't what the security on the ground did/didn't do; the issue is who made decisions about how much security was needed. I suspect we know the answer to that.

redcandlelight · 07/01/2021 17:30

thank you for these informative threads!

It's a delicate balance. There's a danger of a self fulfilling prophecy if you flood the place with police (bearing in mind almost all US police are armed). It simply ramps up the tension and plays into the hands of the leaders who want to whip up trouble. It also gives an air of legitimacy to their cause.

Things are a touch different in the UK as we really don't want a universally armed police (mainly because we struggle to trust the police that do have guns). The old adage about when the only tool you have is a hammer, all problems look like nails applies. There are more subtle ways to control a crowd with minimum visible presence, if you want to.

'The invasion of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday was stoked in plain sight. For weeks, the far-right supporters of President Donald Trump railed on social media that the election had been stolen. They openly discussed the idea of violent protest on the day Congress met to certify the result.

“We came up with the idea to occupy just outside the CAPITOL on Jan 6th," leaders of the Stop the Steal movement wrote on Dec. 23. They called their Wednesday demonstration the Wild Protest, a name taken from a tweet by Trump that encouraged his supporters to take their grievances to the streets of Washington. “Will be wild," the president tweeted.

Ali Alexander, the founder of the movement, encouraged people to bring tents and sleeping bags and avoid wearing masks for the event. “If D.C. escalates… so do we," Alexander wrote on Parler last week — one of scores of social media posts welcoming violence that were reviewed by ProPublica in the weeks leading up to Wednesday's attack on the capitol.'

No excuse saying that no one knew

BBC are reporting that a recently elected state level Republican filmed himself taking part in the protest yesterday Shock (apparently be was there to film history...)

DGRossetti · 07/01/2021 17:43

It's a dirty war, information and disinformation.

Only a Trumper could believe that the authorities had no idea what was going to happen yesterday. I certainly wouldn't Even if there was a suggestion of that from the authorities.

However even having advance notice of something is no guarantee you can deal with it. There may well have been a judgement call to keep a low key policing presence which would keep protesters thinned out, but also allow surveillance to pick up ringleaders ?

I don't know. But the very low body count can only be a good thing.

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 07/01/2021 17:45

and avoid wearing masks for the event

How do all these completely mutually-irrelevant resentments get lumped together into one group??

I watch FBI Most Wanted - they have a programme that scans photos against social media, surely that's a real thing and the FBI have that too?!
Janonomouse · 07/01/2021 17:49

He absolutely needs to be removed from office. He invited an attack on the Capitol. Were he not a politician, he'd have been arrested. Tolerating that behaviour from a President might be an even more outrageous than yesterday's scenes.

Even if you want to forget principle and act out of pure pragmatism; impeachment means he cannot run for office again. I think a lot of Republican politicians would be grateful for that.

lionheart · 07/01/2021 17:50

Doubled up there Jai.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 07/01/2021 17:55

Bound to happen, in all this activity, @lionheart. If only something actually gets done, rather than just words, words, words but no action to put a legal stop to this madman and his supporters.

DuncinToffee · 07/01/2021 18:03

BruceAndNosh · 07/01/2021 18:22

There's talk of invoking the 25th , or impeachment.
since the procedures are different, those who want rid of trump need to opt for one or the other, (I think, maybe the two can run simultaneously, dunno)

Fredelliottisayfredelliott · 07/01/2021 18:22

Has anyone found anymore info on the other 3 people who died ( apart from Ashli Babbitt) I cant find anything. Also has Ashli Babbitts Twitter account been taken down?

Roussette · 07/01/2021 18:23

My personal opinion... I think he will be encouraged to resign or face 25th amendment. That's what happened to Nixon. He chose to resign as he had more principles than Trump
