Settle a baby name argument

My fiancé wants to call our “hypothetical” son Roland.

I think it’s a horribly old fashioned name that will cause him to be bullied.

He thinks it’s ridiculously cool and is gutted that I hate it.

Who is being unreasonable?

If you don’t like your husband’s suggestions and you have no names at all could you ask your daughters?

I don’t mind Raymond, Ray sounds pretty cool like Ray Donovan.

HOkieCOkie · 07/01/2021 13:56

My grandpa was called Roland, or Rollie when he was young. I like it I would consider it if I had a boy.

MrsWednesdayteatime · 07/01/2021 13:59

Made me think of King Rollo and now I feel really old.

I hope your surname isn't Chips.

SalemsPot22 · 07/01/2021 14:11

My daughters have equally as terrible taste.

I don't know how old your daughters are, but I'd advise any parent not to seek the wise counsel of very young older siblings, unless they would particularly like a new baby named Poohead or Bumface. Or, if you're 'lucky', their repertoire of names will not be very wide and so they might insist that the new baby be given the exact name as themselves.

Mochudubh · 07/01/2021 14:28

@SalemsPot22

He also likes Raymond Sad
Are you in NE Scotland by any chance? When I first went to College in Aberdeen I couldn't get over the number of young men, boys even with "Auld Mannie" names like Raymond, Norman and Eric. At the time the only people I knew with those names were over 60 and I originate only a hundred or so miles away.
confusedbeyond · 07/01/2021 14:31

I have to say I really like the name Roland.
But, not if your husbands going to pronounce it with LAND on the end instead of LUND though! 😂

MrsMop1964 · 07/01/2021 14:44

Another one here who thinks of rat, grange hill, roly poly and Roly the poodle from Eastenders!
Of course kids won't know these. .
Also thought of Rolos..must be craving chocolate..

CardoMondo · 07/01/2021 14:53

My god it’s awful. In a film about bullying, the victim would be called Roland

PlanetSlattern · 07/01/2021 14:55

I quite like Roland (though not Ro-LAND) and Raymond. But you don't, so you can't use them.

Your daughters' names are French-sounding (and very beautiful). How about Remy for a boy? I also love Lucien and Emile.

TeddyDidIt · 07/01/2021 14:55

First thought was Rat, next was Roly.

SpacePug · 07/01/2021 15:23

Roland reminds me of the creepy guy on Sabrina the teenage witch. Raymond reminds me of the animal crossing villager, he's really popular with fans so I think that makes Raymond a cool name

user686833 · 07/01/2021 15:24

He likes hipster names. I think they are cool.

yulelogc · 07/01/2021 15:27

Yeah I thought of Roland rat... so I'm with you

NuniaBeeswax · 07/01/2021 15:30

Half of the men on one side of my family are called (Ronnie) Roland...

timetochangeagainforever · 07/01/2021 15:34

Roland Rat or Roland from Grange Hill

peony68 · 07/01/2021 15:35

Are you sure he's not just winding you up !?

BluebellCockleshell123 · 07/01/2021 15:39

Anyone over 45 will think of Roland Rat or Roland out of Grange Hill.

Anyone younger will think of Roland Schitt.

Personally I usually think of Roland Butter.

It’s a no from me.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 07/01/2021 15:52

Neither of you. Different tastes, and everyone will feel differently over it.

Exactly this. Personally, I don't like it but then again I don't like the majority of names that are discussed on here Blush

Alonelonelyloner · 07/01/2021 15:53

urgh it is an awful name. As is Raymond. So dated.

Not necessarily! My sister aged 2.5 chose a great name for our little brother. My parents were so impressed that they actually called him it.
SecretMaccies · 07/01/2021 16:02

It makes me think of Ronald to be honest.

It's not the absolute worst name I've ever heard though.

I had a dilemma when naming our son, my husband really liked Rupert and whilst I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with it, I just couldn't put my finger on why I didn't like it. I liked the idea of a nickname being Roo, but not the full name.

Lookslikerainted · 07/01/2021 16:03

@SalemsPot22

I’m 27 and know who Roland rat is to be fair.
Yes a 27year old might know Roland rat but 10 year olds won’t. I’m a teacher and my class of teenagers in London didn’t know Beyoncé was in destiny child...
