Settle a baby name argument

My fiancé wants to call our “hypothetical” son Roland.

I think it’s a horribly old fashioned name that will cause him to be bullied.

He thinks it’s ridiculously cool and is gutted that I hate it.

Who is being unreasonable?

I think of Roland Rat or Roland from Grange Hill.

Lots of old fashioned names have made a comeback. When I was young we though Alfred Harry Archie etc were all old fashioned

And while your son is a young man then it becomes a young mans name in the mind of his peers

Ha girls names are fine! We have the same taste. Doesn’t help that I just really don’t like boys names but I know that Roland is a crap name.

I know a few grown-ups called Roly (for short) and a couple of young children called Ray.

As PP say, Archie, Albie, Stanley etc were all considered old men names a few years ago.

I love Raymond! Very cool. Also Lionel and Leonard. Easy to spell, known names.

Roland is a Grange Hill name. I don't think Raymond is much better, Ray possibly.

Roland is ok but he will get Roland rat a lot and no one wants to be called a rat even if he is a cool one

It's much better than Korg or Yamaha.

I really don't think Roland Rat or Roland from Grange Hill are going to figure highly in the cultural reference points of his 2020s-born contemporaries, though!

I'm 39 and had to google Roland rat so don't think the kids will be calling him that.

However it is an awful name. You don't need a reason to veto it.

I'm going to go against the grain a bit and say Roland's perfectly fine. The children your hypothetical son goes to school with are unlikely to be familiar with Roland rat or Roland from grange hill - they're both a bit before my time and I'm in my 30s - so I can't see him being teased. That said if you don't like it, you don't like it 🤷‍♀️
