Settle a baby name argument

My fiancé wants to call our “hypothetical” son Roland.

I think it’s a horribly old fashioned name that will cause him to be bullied.

He thinks it’s ridiculously cool and is gutted that I hate it.

Who is being unreasonable?

I have a friend called Rowland. Apparently when he was born his mum told her mum that the new baby was called "Roland with a W", to which her mother replied in horror "Woland? Why on earth did you call him Woland?" Grin

Dee1975 · 07/01/2021 07:53

Roland rat was my thoughts!

Lookslikerainted · 07/01/2021 07:56

What’s Roland rat? I’m not sure kids would make that connection.

Neither are unreasonable, it’s down to taste. I’ve heard a lot worse names than that, but wouldn’t call my son that.

LindaEllen · 07/01/2021 07:56

I had a Roland Rowlands in my class at primary school. No idea what goes through peoples heads sometimes.

It's normal to have different tastes in names. You need to pick one you both agree on.

I don't think he'd get called Roland Rat at school as kids won't have a clue what that is. Remember we're all older on here!

LindaEllen · 07/01/2021 07:57

@Thereareliterallynonamesleft

My grandpa’s name was Roland but he went by Ron/Ronnie - a possible compromise...?
Erm are you sure his name wasn't Ronald not Roland? Ron and Ronnie aren't short for Roland.
sbhydrogen · 07/01/2021 08:01

Roland is a good name. Nobody under 4
30 is going to know who Roland Rat is.

But if you don't like it then don't call your kid it!

sbhydrogen · 07/01/2021 08:02

Nobody under 30** (I'm 32 and had to look it up)

Smiledwiththerisingsun · 07/01/2021 08:07

RoLAND! In Grange Hill!
HIBU

PurpleMustang · 07/01/2021 08:19

Yep Rat or Grange Hill. If he was desperate to use a name I would let him use it as a 2 middle name so would never really get used Bobby Fred Roland Smith

IsolaPribby · 07/01/2021 08:21

@SalemsPot22

He also likes Raymond Sad
Do you have to have kids with him?
SalemsPot22 · 07/01/2021 08:26

I’m 27 and know who Roland rat is to be fair.

OP posts:
MessAllOver · 07/01/2021 08:32

He is (being unreasonable). But I don't like old man names so am biased against both Roland and Raymond.

Twizbe · 07/01/2021 08:32

I like the name Roland. I loved Roland rat.

I also knew a German Roland who was an awesome bloke.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 07/01/2021 08:33

Roland Schitt from Schitt's Creek!

Carysmatthews · 07/01/2021 08:47

Roland from Grange Hill, or should I say RolAnd as he was called.
It’s a terrible name.

Twinkie01 · 07/01/2021 08:53

Fat kid from Grange Hill.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/01/2021 10:50

Also, Roland the Farter. Here we all are (me included) saying that kids born in the 2020s will never have a clue who the late 20th Century Rat or Grange Hill pupil were; however, RtF lived in the 12th Century and anybody with a love of childishly hilarious vitally important English royal tradition still knows of him well to this very day. Indeed, he is writ large in the anals of history.

IamMaz · 07/01/2021 11:17

I like Rory....???

EuphieKat · 07/01/2021 11:20

SalemsPot22 haha- brilliant!
I love your girls’ names, by the way. I can only hear ‘Ro-laaaand’ like his friend (Janet?) said it in Grange Hill!

SalemsPot22 · 07/01/2021 13:36

He also likes Forrest but I can’t get past Forrest Gump!

OP posts:
Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 07/01/2021 13:44

Forrest is dreadful too. Do you like anything yourself?

cushioncovers · 07/01/2021 13:47

Roland rat
And Roland Schitt from shirts creek.

It's an awful name.

Vermeil · 07/01/2021 13:52

I’ve noticed that unless it rhymes perfectly and obviously with something really insulting/rude, then names don’t get taken much notice of these days. It’s very different from how it was when I was at school in the 80s/90s with an unusual name and each class seemed to have three Claires and four Daniels’.

SalemsPot22 · 07/01/2021 13:53

Not really! Haven’t found and boys names I like so far Sad

OP posts:
redheadwitch · 07/01/2021 13:54

Roland Butter...
