My fiancé wants to call our “hypothetical” son Roland.

I think it’s a horribly old fashioned name that will cause him to be bullied.

He thinks it’s ridiculously cool and is gutted that I hate it.

Who is being unreasonable?

Ah I like Roland but definitely don't agree to a name you dislike. From your list I like Oscar and Niko.

My husband wanted to call our hypothetical son Reginald.

My Grandad was called Reginald - he would have been 100 last month. It always seemed to me like a terribly old-fashioned name even for him!

Mind, Roland would be a cool name if your surname was Rock!

Old-fashioned names have had a big revival though! Alfie, Archie, Audrey, etc

Sidney = masculine, Sydney = feminine.

Sydney = Australian city

My husband suggested Rowland. I still haven't got over it and the child is now 20! Tell your husband that he'd be Roly, which is ok for a cute baby but what if your child was on the tubby side later on - many kids go through a bit of a puppy fat stage - he'd be teased with Roly Poly.

Grange Hill Row-Land, Roland Rat, and Roland Ratzenberger are who immediately come to mind. I doubt many under 30's know who any of them were tbh.

IracebethOfCrims · 12/01/2021 08:23

There was a little Roland at my DD’d toddler group. He was known as Roley. I never liked the name, makes me think of Roland Rat.

I also first thought "Roland the gunslinger! Idris Elba! Magnificent modern Arthurian fantasy" - despite being in my mid 40s. But there are enough people going to Roland Rat for me to agree, with some regret, that it is a no. At least for now.
