Settle a baby name argument

My fiancé wants to call our “hypothetical” son Roland.

I think it’s a horribly old fashioned name that will cause him to be bullied.

He thinks it’s ridiculously cool and is gutted that I hate it.

Who is being unreasonable?

We’re all thinking ‘rat’ or Grange Hill but little Roland’s friends won’t have ever heard of either of them, so he won’t get teased at school for it. If some adult thinks that’s an ok thing to take the piss out of a small child for, it says more about the adult than the name!

It’s not for me tbh. My husband wanted to call our son Ronnie in 2012 and I said no as I thought Ron sounded like an old man. Now there’s quite a few Ronnies being born!

You should each have the "right" to veto names. Otherwise the child could end up with a name that one of the parents loathes. So it doesn't matter what any of us think. Roland could be the most popular name, loved both near and far, but if you personally don't like it, it's not an option. Argument settled.

It makes me think of an overweight kid I’m afraid because of Roland from grange hill and it sounds like roly-poly. I also dislike the trend for Ronnie and Reggie - sounds like little gangsters from bugsy Malone!

I know a young Roland and he's pretty popular /cool. It's not a name I'd choose but it's OK.

I think Roland is a good name and potentially uber desirable in a few years' time. A while ago nobody would have dreamt of calling a boy Albert, Wilfred or Archie, now they are almost compulsory. The coolest person I know is called Roland- it's actually a middle name but the one he chooses to go by. People of a certain age might think of Roland Rat but babies born in 2021 will have no conception of that so i wouldnt worry about it. On the other hand YANBU to dislike any name; most eventual choices involve an element of negotiation and compromise. Just please don't name him Raymond!!
