Settle a baby name argument

My fiancé wants to call our “hypothetical” son Roland.

I think it’s a horribly old fashioned name that will cause him to be bullied.

He thinks it’s ridiculously cool and is gutted that I hate it.

Who is being unreasonable?

Late to the party but another one saying 'Rat'.

Raymond is awful

How old is he?
What nationality is he?

Think of some boys names you like.

No big hurry given it's only a hypothetical baby though I guess.

You're not married
You don't have kids

I rather like it - and I wouldn't mind betting that it will become more popular over the next few years and then every other baby will be called Roland! That's what happened with other unpopular names, such as Jack, Oliver, Harry, Olivia, Ruby, Grace etc

Sheleg · 06/01/2021 22:30

I really like it! We had a lovely kind old neighbour named Roland.

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 06/01/2021 22:31

Rory? That’d work ok.

Geepee71 · 06/01/2021 22:31

Rooooooowland from Grange Hill, erm No!

Avogato · 06/01/2021 22:32

@romany4 Made me think of Rolan Bolan too Grin I’m in my 30s but love a bit of T Rex

CheshireCats · 06/01/2021 22:32

Roland is horrible. Raymond (Ray) is slightly better but still... 🙄

YoniAndGuy · 06/01/2021 22:32

Well, doesn't matter because you don't like it.

Maybe in this case, you should have the baby before you get married!

YoniAndGuy · 06/01/2021 22:32

And yes, Roland isn't very nice!

Alicesweewonders · 06/01/2021 22:34

Ronald McDonaldConfused

angelikacpickles · 06/01/2021 22:35

YANBU for thinking Roland is awful but YABU for saying you don't like any boys names.

hansgrueber · 06/01/2021 22:36

@Omeara

Don’t let your husband name your child!
Can he name his child however?
peapotter · 06/01/2021 22:36

I don’t like either name

Which gives them at least a 50/50 chance of becoming cool in the next decade. Your son could be ahead of the curve.

BarryGlendenning · 06/01/2021 22:37

@Duvetdweller

Roland from Grange Hill
Always the first Roland I think of 😊
BorderlineHappy · 06/01/2021 22:37

I dont like either.

I dont they sound like a babies name. More like older men in their 70s.

SalemsPot22 · 06/01/2021 22:38

We do have kids! 2 girls luckily!

OP posts:
Maireas · 06/01/2021 22:39

I like it! People said the same about Alfie ten years ago! Makes a change from Oliver.

YougoFargo · 06/01/2021 22:41

I dont know Roland Rat. The only Roland I know is from a computer game a long time ago (Heroes of Might and Magic II anyone?) and he's epic in that. Ergo - I like it! It's unusual, it reminds me of a kingly name and is much better than another Noah, Arthur or Oliver

Housewife2010 · 06/01/2021 22:41

Why would his future friends from the mid 2020s and beyond think of two characters from children's/breakfast TV over forty years earlier?

MissMarpleDarling · 06/01/2021 22:43

Roland Schitt. Watch Schitts Creek 😂

Fangdrew · 06/01/2021 22:45

Fair play to him for going for something refreshing and different, it’s just not really a very nice name!

I hate Raymond only because I knew a horrible godless Raymond. It’s marginally better than Roland.

Our son is a Robert and I do get a lot of funny second glances when I announce his name. Not sure if it’s a bit fuddy duddy or old-man ish but it’s a family name (Scottish) and the only one we loved, so we don’t care.

EmpressSuiko · 06/01/2021 22:46

Is definitely be looking to find a compromise. Roland - no way
Raymond - too old fashioned

What about Rowan?.

StillReasonablyIntelligent · 06/01/2021 22:46

Roland is awful.
In fact, I know a VERY sexy guy called Roland; it took me by surprise I went bright red and giggly when I met him, having previously only heard of him by name, because I'd assumed he was a hairy, chubby middle-aged man who enjoyed train spotting - an assumption made purely on his name Blush
Says way more about me than him, of course, but also says a lot about the name!

Mincepiehangover · 06/01/2021 22:46

My husband had his heart set on a boys name - l mean it was never gonna happen bit l am still very glad l had a girl so it didn't have to be mentioned ever again!!

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 06/01/2021 22:46

I'm in my 30's and my first thought was rat but I've no idea who that is or how I know about it but I mustn't be alone
