There are many many many reasons why Republicans do not agree with the Democrats.

We’re so happy to be enlightened with this stunning insight, which I’m sure applies especially to posters - such as mathanxiety - who actually live in and are politically active in the United States.

The only real issue would be if Biden became too ill, died or became incapacitated in some way between now and two weeks time. I would not like to guess what would happen in those circumstances.

Otherwise we should expect things to calm down for now.

PerkingFaintly · 07/01/2021 11:43

CNN was also very clear in stating that the behaviour of many of the insurrectionists was because they had been lied to by Trump and by conspiracy supporters.

This wasn't guesswork.

CNN's Donie has been out there asking them why they're there, and how they feel. He clearly really felt for them, while also being clear that the things these folk had been told where false (they wrongly believed there was credible evidence the election has been stolen, they wrongly believed Pence could stop the certification).

That's why I praised Donie's work earlier.

So it's not the case that these folk are not being listened to. And it's not the case that CNN is trying to demonise all Republicans, or even all people who turned up outside the House.

Icanseegreenshoots · 07/01/2021 11:44

Do you work for CNN Perking?

PerkingFaintly · 07/01/2021 11:46

Wow.

Is that all you've got?

DGRossetti · 07/01/2021 11:46

There are many many many reasons why Republicans do not agree with the Democrats.

But unless they both agree on the fundamental system that delivers power - whether they are in power or not - then it becomes either a tyranny, or a revolt.

I won't go as far as blaming all this on Brexit, but the dangerous notion that 51/49 means the 51 can piss all over the 49 started somewhere.

And a split like that in democracy can easily be used to justify ignoring women completely. After all, why should their 49% count against the 51% ?

And FPTP systems pretty much institutionalises that winner-takes-all view of political life.

PerkingFaintly · 07/01/2021 11:47

Care to compare what CNN actually did, with your claims about CNN upthread?

Icanseegreenshoots · 07/01/2021 11:48

I can't be bothered to repeat it Perking. Read it again yourself. CNN are a disgrace, and no one can describe the screaming and insults as journalism!

Icanseegreenshoots · 07/01/2021 11:50

Fortunately I have at least 15 news channels to choose from that did not include such vulgar, colourful language.

Keeping the tone civilised and respectful should be the very least we should expect from our media outlets, even if they can not muster the effort to offer a balanced unbiased view.

PerkingFaintly · 07/01/2021 11:51

Likewise, would you care to explain how Biden's speech poured fuel on the flames, as you claimed at Thu 07-Jan-21 07:49:40?

I've posted the text, so everyone can see what he said.

Icanseegreenshoots · 07/01/2021 11:54

I think Biden needs to make a much bigger effort in genuinely reaching out to the disenfranchised masses. He has an obligation to work for everyone and not just his fan base. I am not invested either way, but I can see the huge problems Biden is now facing. Starting from a position of looking out for everyone - taking their grievances seriously and moving forward with them - rather than in spite of them would be a smart move.

PerkingFaintly · 07/01/2021 11:56

So you'll be pleased that that's what he seems to be doing, then?

cbt944 · 07/01/2021 11:56

I'm sure he could do with an enlightened being such as yourself as his advisor. Man's only been in politics for forty-odd years...

I bet you would like to guess.

Why should anything like this happen to Biden? Yes, he’s old, but appears to be in excellent health. Thanks for the reassurance about things calming down, though, I’m sure we all feel better for that.

I don’t think you’ve listened to a word Biden has said since winning the election Confused

I do hope greenshoots jumps on to the next thread so I can continue to compile my Compendium Of Unsolicited And Useless Advice For People Who Know More Than I Do.
