@ScarletUnderkill

What’s Melania up to, do you think? Packing her bags?
Egging him on, I would think. Giving him the tweet notes and hiding her hands. Wives aren't usually innocent. People just like to make them out to be.

“Why do I feel like the Trump family all have a suitcase packed at all times?“

With an empty one for the silverware.

borntobequiet · 07/01/2021 09:59

No one wins a war of hearts and minds with insults and calling people idiots.

Neither does anyone convince anyone of anything by spouting repetitive, irrelevant, platitudinous claptrap.

mathanxiety · 07/01/2021 09:59

Why hasn't the Republican leadership stamped on this harder in the last 24 hours (or indeed anytime since November)?

Because they may have thought it would win them the Senate elections in Georgia.

The phone conversation between Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger was the beginning of the end.

The fact that Trump's delusions resulted in the Democratic win in GA played a large part in the conversion of Pence and McConnell.

DuncinToffee · 07/01/2021 10:00

believe that Biden is already employing a hand picked security team rather than merely transferring to the one Trump has had for this very reason

I'd definitely read something about this as a concern thats being taken seriously prior to yesterday.

Yes, I remember it being mentioned in one of the previous threads

Roussette · 07/01/2021 10:00

Yes, Biden is handpicking his security detail and will be having some who looked after him when he was VP.
There are definitely trump-loyal security men who he would want to be avoiding.

I wonder where it all goes from here, I really do.

Fascinated in a macabre way about what the Trump family will now do. Scotland won;t have him, he can't live at Mar-a-largo as there is a condition he signed when he built it that it can't happen. NY hate him. What is going to happen for the next two years and where is he going to go.

mathanxiety · 07/01/2021 10:00

Because they may have thought it would win them the Senate elections in Georgia.

that is to say, they may have thought continued support for Trump would win them the Senate elections in GA.

frumpety · 07/01/2021 10:00

Ah of course @RedToothBrush , different factions reminds me of Peoples front of Judea and the Judean peoples front (splitters ! ) and all that.

"Riding the dragon".

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 07/01/2021 10:01

Thank you for the description and information, @AdventureIsWaiting.

Agree, this is all deeply disturbing. Odd when you feel you must have donned a tin foil hat when you can find it easy to believe that the President of the US is actually inciting civil war to his own narcissistic ends.

Kendodd · 07/01/2021 10:02

It has gotten to the point though that there is no amount of evidence that will make people rethink. You can call them whatever names you like, it will make no difference anyway. You can't reason with flat earthers. Very sadly, I think we just have to wait for these people to die for their opinions to die out, they will NEVER change them. It's very sad.

Icanseegreenshoots · 07/01/2021 10:02

iamtomhanks You are wrong actually, in Afghanistan and other states they have sat down with known terrorist groups and brokered peace and solutions. That is exactly what happened.

You have two choices - civil war or debate, discussion and finding solutions, and yes you will have to hold your nose and grit your teeth, but that is how the real world works.

Every country would live in chaos if we were not able to reason and discuss solutions and opposing views. Even ones that turn violent.
Your political concept is closer to that of China - simply crushing all debate, all respect and conversation and choosing one line and one party politics. Democracies especially largely peaceful ones, do not work that way.

@borntobequiet

It’s worth repeating: this situation has been predicted or at least speculated about on these (Trump) threads for at least the last four years. It’s upsetting but unsurprising for anyone who has been watching what has been going on. The surprise has been in the ease with which the mob was able to access one of the most iconic buildings in the United States, the literal centre of its legislative structure, at such a pivotal moment in its constitutional process. Platitudinous and wholly redundant advice to posters to educate themselves and consider a range of different views and interpretations of the situation is bound to irritate. In charity, one might consider that those offering such advice are unfamiliar with the discussions that have been going on here for a long, long time, but I’m more inclined to believe otherwise.
Yes. This.

President Biden will hand this over to the DOJ and other agencies, as he should.

You cannot have a dialogue with people who believe fake news and conspiracy theories, or with white supremicists.

Icanseegreenshoots · 07/01/2021 10:04

ken you are showing your own limited world view if you think every Trump supporter is a flat earther! Entrenchment is not helpful.

You are making a fundamental mistake if you think this is a war of hearts and minds @Icanseegreenshoots. The mob in the Capitol today are not fighting for hearts and minds.

They are in this to destroy an institution and the processes they hate because after more than 200 years it has started to work for the benefit of all the people, not just white men.

It is now up to the GOP leadership to explain to their useful fools why that is something they are going to have to suck up/ what the Constitution and the Bill of Rights mean.

They’ll have all been there in school trips anyway.
knittingaddict · 07/01/2021 10:09

@CrotchBurn

Oh my god!!! Sorry I totally see why people think I'm a conspiracy theorist!!!

I hadnt realised that in the US elected presidents have to wait for a while before they have power. I thought Biden already had power. That's why I couldn't understand why he would have been so lax on security here.

🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Sorry guys 😂

I owe you a vote of thanks here for proving that conspiracy theorists really do come from a place of ignorance and poor education. That they aren't the critical thinkers they claim to be.

‘Dialogue’? As if people like this are ever going to listen to reason? Let alone facts? They want to believe that the election was stolen, and no mere proof will convince them otherwise.

Some US political pundit I heard on the World Service a couple of nights ago, said that all too often Americans don’t vote for a party because they like it, but because they actually hate the other one.

To me the one crumb of comfort in all this, is that so many prominent Republicans are now coming right out and condemning Trump for inciting violence and insurrection, not to mention the assault on a lawful democratic process.

52andblue · 07/01/2021 10:13

@IamTomHanks

One of the worlds most powerful, military friendly and gun happy countries, following a summer of violence and hugely tense presidential election, just happened to take a really casual approach to a protest organised by a complete nut job.

You're not wrong in wondering about that.

It does seem like security was ridiculously light given that its been obvious for awhile that Trump was inciting his minions to violence.

But Biden had nothing to do with setting security at Capitol Hill last night, because he has no power right now.

The "burden" lies on the shoulders of whoever was in charge of security. If it was the Secret Service, then the burden is on Trump and his cabinet.

Correct. The idea that 'Biden is behind / also benefits from this' is crazy. As you say, if it was Secret Service responsibility it was Trump 'behind' the levels of security. And he had most to gain (in his warped mind) from security being overcome to any extent. I agree with @RedToothBrush, I think the ultimate aim is to execute a congressperson or that someone will take a shot at Biden/Harris around inauguration time. Its really scary - Trump is legitimising this. I saw Biden's speech last night. The man was genuinely sorrowful at what was happening in his country & being shown around the world.

How the US heals this sort of rifts is a big issue. Biden may be the man.

Icanseegreenshoots · 07/01/2021 10:13

If the US will insist on allowing an entertainment reality show B list celebrity to become president they can not be surprised that he has chosen to leave with a bang.
Someone somewhere in the RP thought it was a good idea to put forward a narc entertainer with a shady past forward for President, and now we are all living with the consequences.

This man was never ever going to leave quietly.

The whole debacle was spectacularly awful, but very fitting with who he is, and what he stands for. I can't think why we expected a calm, efficient orderly handover from someone like him.

Nonetheless he clearly has huge support in the military and security services, there is a big problem brewing, and it erupted into view last night.
