to cringe at people who talk about "Boris"

Why do people continue to talk about him as if he was their mate?
Has he really succeeded in fooling so many?
It makes me cringe everytime people say it.

Lets see what Boris says
I'd like to meet up but it depends on Boris

on and on it goes.
The man is an embarassment.

OP posts:

Margaret Thatcher is actually a good example of this.
Thatcher was used by people who really disliked her but also by her supporters.
Maggie was used by people in that warm, matey way.

Doodallysally · 05/01/2021 14:53

Well most heads of state are referred to by their surname! Which is far more matey then using a first name...

Macron, Merkel, Obama, Trump, Cameron, Blair, Modi, Bush etc.

It's only his bloody name. Also he was Mayor of London for yonks which is when his 'brand' was created and he was actually liked.

Utterly ridiculous non issue. You may not like him but questioning why people use his name is bonkers. Plenty of people choose to use their second name as a first name.

If you had a shit boss you hated what on earth would you call him?! YABVU.

TheOneLeggedJockey · 05/01/2021 14:53

I very much get what you’re getting at, but Boris is such a ridiculous an uncommon name, so everyone knows who you’re talking about.

David and Tony could be anyone.

Janegrey333 · 05/01/2021 14:55

@Justcallmebebes

His name's not Boris, it's Alexander
Yes we do know that. He uses Boris, however, as do the people to whom the OP is referring.
CounsellorTroi · 05/01/2021 14:57

Margaret Thatcher was referred to as Thatcher by those who hated her. Maggie by those who liked her.

Bizawit · 05/01/2021 14:57

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

Could we perhaps repurpose it?

For example: "I've been constipated for days, but last night I ate a bag of prunes and today I had an eye-watering Boris! Feel ten times better."

Grin
CounsellorTroi · 05/01/2021 14:57

Sorry just realised someone has already made this point!

Mittens030869 · 05/01/2021 14:58

'Maggie' was also her Spitting Image persona, as I remember.

Merename · 05/01/2021 15:01

Sorry if someone already said this, but it bugged me when media people referred to ‘Mrs May’. Couldn’t exactly articulate why but felt totally sexist and patronising. Boris doesn’t bother me, pretty unique PM name.

zoemum2006 · 05/01/2021 15:02

OMG OP I agree with you 100%.

The right wing media have packaged him as this lovable rogue when really it's just a selfish, incompetence overly privilege fool who is making this pandemic harder than it needs to be with his dither.

thosetalesofunexpected · 05/01/2021 15:02

Hi Op
I agree get where you are coming 😕from,
But reading these posts I get too now why people call him Boris .

Myself I prefer to Say "BJ coming on tv" ...

BJ Aberviatiom
(Short for BlooooW Job)
"Be cause you never know how Looong he will take to get to the point."
And your Jaws end up Aching like chronic with holding the tension for
Soo Looong.!
with BJ (Boris).

MumblesHereMumblesThere · 05/01/2021 15:02

Boris is a waste of space.

Boris is not my mate.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 05/01/2021 15:04

I think I call him Boris because I don’t respect him enough to full name him.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 05/01/2021 15:08

Pretty sure the people shouting Maggie Maggie Maggie Out Out Out didn't love her.

PussGirl · 05/01/2021 15:09

To me calling him Boris sums up just how lightweight he really is, otherwise I'd call him Boris Johnson or Mr Johnson or Alexander Pfeffel Boris Twerpyface Johnson, or whatever the hell his name is.

wildraisins · 05/01/2021 15:11

I think it's just because Boris is quite a distinctive name and there aren't many around. It's also how the media has often referred to him so I guess it's just kind of caught on. I sometimes refer to him as Boris but would certainly not be his "mate" if you paid me!

Woewoewoejoy · 05/01/2021 15:12

I actually call him Boris out of lack of respect. If I respected him I would call Mr Johnson but that's just my way of thinking

ZippedyDooDa · 05/01/2021 15:23

Just because people call him Boris doesn't mean they like him, or think of him as a mate

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/01/2021 15:30

People use Donald to mean Trump

I didn't - I used "Trump". I honestly don't know anyone, British or American who called him "Donald".

Boris marketed himself as a lovable buffoon. That may have endeared him to people, but it's left him with a pretty ridiculous persona that people don't take seriously. At times of crisis (Covid and Brexit) we needed a serious states(wo)man to run the country.

Agreed.
He is like everyone's dotty Uncle.

For "dotty" substitute "sleazy"
Everyone's sleazy uncle.

The one you don't let near the pubescent girls, or your DD's schoolfriend, or your DS's girlfriend, or your attractive NDN, or the milk woman - or anybody with 2 X-chromosmes, really.

And you warn everybody not to lend him a tenner for a taxi, either.

Sh05 · 05/01/2021 15:38

I agree with @Somuddled. Its to show how little respect there is for him.

UsernameSpoosername · 05/01/2021 15:45

Well you’d hate me, we call him Bojo. Our old pal BoJo waffling shite on the news again!

thosetalesofunexpected · 05/01/2021 15:48

@VintageStitchers

"We call him Doris in our house"
😂😂😂

Tavannach · 05/01/2021 15:50

His family and friends call him "Al" short for Alexander, because that's his name.
His nickname at Eton was "Pee pee", from de Pfeffl.
Boris is the brand he's spent decades creating.

HDDD · 05/01/2021 15:52

CBA to RTFT but I call him our current PM. Boris is the cuddly buffoon he created, those who call him Boris fell for it. YANBU - he's a tool.

SparkleAllTheWay · 05/01/2021 15:59

He’s Bojo in my house. Theresa May was Tezza. It’s a sign of...casual disrespect.
