Why do people continue to talk about him as if he was their mate?
Has he really succeeded in fooling so many?
It makes me cringe everytime people say it.

Lets see what Boris says
I'd like to meet up but it depends on Boris

on and on it goes.
The man is an embarassment.

I agree, it is weird. I also noticed that it's usually people who like him that call him "Boris".

annevonkleve · 05/01/2021 12:42

I agree OP, when I was on the Brexit boards (haven't been for about a year as it was too depressing) there was a real attempt to call him Johnson or BJ or whatever. Boris is too familiar and makes him seem to much of a chum, which he absolutely isn't.

We don't refer to Gav or Mike for Williamson or Gove, do we? Or Dave for David Cameron.

TeaEgg · 05/01/2021 12:43

We call him 'the Chief Fool' in this house.

Really? I haven't noticed that at all. What do people that don't like him call him (not sweary stuff just talking about him).
littleburn · 05/01/2021 12:45

I get where you're coming from OP. Yes it's his name, but it's also part of the 'good old Boris' clownish personality cult that's helped get him this far - far beyond his abilities and competence - with a certain set of Tory/Brexit voters. It was never 'Theresa' was it?

I always refer to him as the Prime Minister as I refuse to buy into the whole 'my mate Boris' crap.

FreeChuro · 05/01/2021 12:46

I call him Boris and I loathe the bastard.

megletthesecond · 05/01/2021 12:47

Yanbu.
Cameron wasn't "Dave" and May wasn't "Theresa".
I call him Johnson or That cunt.

Pinkywoo · 05/01/2021 12:47

I think it's more derogatory than matey, like it's too embarrassingly depressing to call him the Prime Minister so people say Boris. It's a lack of respect not affection.

No it was never Theresa because crap as she was, she conducted herself in an adult and appropriate matter. Very few people use the name Boris to be matey about him, it's more a sign of disrespect to show he doesn't deserve the title of PM.

It's a bit like calling a primary school child by their last name, it just sounds weird to call someone so childish and silly 'Mr Johnson'.

Sheleg · 05/01/2021 12:49

Ugh totally. Makes me cringe.

ZaraW · 05/01/2021 12:50

YANBU I hate him and would never call him by his first name. I refer to him as BoJo.

Waterdropsdown · 05/01/2021 12:50

We would never usually talk about a PM as much as we are in this scenario. My parents and in laws in Scotland say “Nicola” to reference NS. Like “let’s see what Nicola says later on”

EngineeringFix · 05/01/2021 12:50

We would say Dave or Theresa if the context was clear. I live an informal life! No conclusions should be drawn as to any political allegiances.

randomer · 05/01/2021 12:50

I agree its a brand he created. Brand Boris, the chappie on the zip wire, bit of a maverick, sticks up for us Brits, likes a pint, posh but not posh.
Its not even his first name is it?

If I'm writing I refer to him as BJ or Mr Johnston, in speech ( very rarely) "the thing"

Because he says to people, call me Boris?

All the time- it is a catchphrase

Lucieintheskye · 05/01/2021 12:50

Apparently it's frowned upon to refer to him as 'Cunt'

BonnieDundee · 05/01/2021 12:51

I wouldnt describe Boris as a unifying figure. Hes the most divisive PM I can remember.

Actually no make that the second most divisive PM. I remember MT (who btw was always referred to as."Maggie" Grin

randomer · 05/01/2021 12:51

I never referred to Dave, people didn't chat about Dave or Teresa.

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2021 12:51

If there were a lot of people called Boris I could see there might be confusion.

WhereYouLeftIt · 05/01/2021 12:52

"Why do people continue to talk about him as if he was their mate?"
I don't think calling him 'Boris' is talking about him as a mate. It's an unusual name, there are no other politicians called Boris.

Margaret Thatcher was widely known as 'Maggie', but I don't think it was treating her as a mate to shout 'Maggie, Maggie, Maggie - Out! Out! Out!'.

It's probably driven by newspaper headlines - shorten the name as much as possible whilst still being clear about who you're talking about. Five letters and no other Boris'es is a gift to a headline writer.

TheMarzipanDildo · 05/01/2021 12:53

I call him Boris because I don’t believe he deserves the cordiality of a full name. I also referred to ‘Dave’ though.

MunaZaldrizoti · 05/01/2021 12:53

Its because they are idiots whove bought into his buffoonish behaviour and think he's their mate. When he'd happily dance on their graves as long as they've given him their vote. Grade A dumbassery

user1471565182 · 05/01/2021 12:55

You're right, Its meant to make him look all matey and reliable when hes anything but. A walking disaster.

randomer · 05/01/2021 12:55

I have just had a short exchange at a distance, with an acquaintance. I commented on how sorry I was for people with school age children. Much head shaking from her , then she pipes up with "Boris seems to be learning doesn't he? Last night he said We may be out of this by ..... "
It was as if she was talking about a local person.
