AIBU.. to report my own parents (coronavirus)

263 replies

Tier4ParentProblem · 04/01/2021 11:28

Sorry, NC as outing..

They are in a tier 4 area.

I live abroad in a country which has struggled hugely with coronavirus and has put a ban on Brits entering there. I’ve avoided the virus so far with extreme diligence as I work a zero hour contract with no sick pay..

They turned up unannounced on my doorstep.

Whilst I’m pleased to see them, I’m furious that after all our care and sacrifice, they’ll have brought not only the virus but the “British variant” and then when it’s reported in the press it will be patently obvious to the neighbours who is responsible. Also, whilst being not an at risk group, we’ve been really careful to minimize our risk precisely so this nightmare can end sooner and we can visit them safely, in the uk. I’m cross with their arrogance. They won’t even isolate in my home either, they miss shopping and eating out...

So... WIBU to report them?

@donewithitalltodayandxmas how would you describe the responses on this thread then?

What OP’s parents did is really bad and yet people here are blaming the OP.

Yohoheaveho · 04/01/2021 12:52

I don't think you should necessarily report them but if you let them get away with this trampling all over your boundaries there will be no stopping them
They need to be consequences for treating you as if you have no right to make your own decisions!

Tier4ParentProblem · 04/01/2021 12:53

Ok I've found the poll on the website.

So most people think I should report.

I won't report because they're my own parents but I wouldn't be surprised or think it unreasonable if one of the many people they've told back home do so. They have loads of friends who are shielding.

@Butchyrestingface

They turned up unannounced on my doorstep.

How did they manage this if they're banned from entering the country?

Did they jetski in like that bloke on the Isle of Man?

🤣🤣
Cadent · 04/01/2021 12:54

@BunnyBoilerRhian

No idea why you're getting so much grief on here op. Alot of people on here seem very offended at how people overseas see the UK currently. We are one of the most diseased countries seemingly unable to get a grip on Covid. Why are people so shocked at OPs reaction to the "new nasty bristish variant". I'm sure we'd all be saying the same if a nasty variant came from anywhere else. The Brits (I am a Brit) need to understanding complete ignorance, arrogance and it's ok we're Briritsh and in a civilised society, what about my human rights to do what I want blah blah....is exactly why we're so badly affected. Most of the rest of the world have closed their borders to us for very good reason. The ops parents are part of the problem, in their gung ho attitude of doing wtf they please with no regard for anyone else, seemingly, not even their own offspring!
💯 totally agree

@Gwenhwyfar yes but I now know i can travel to france on my passport then travel round the eu for months with no checks as thats what you are saying I was aware of schengen areas bit thought that was so people from those countries needed no paperwork not that anyone from anywhere could freely travel between , I fine that a little concerning from a security point of view as new rules is only 90 days on eu i believe for uk citizens it seems this isn't actually going to be poilced if so easy to travel between

Gwenhwyfar · 04/01/2021 12:55

@Bythemillpond

I thought once you are in mainland EU there are no borders or checks between countries. If you are driving you can go anywhere.
Pretty much, yes.

From Wikipedia:

"The Schengen Area ( /ˈʃɛŋən/) is an area comprising 26 European countries that have officially abolished all passport and all other types of border control at their mutual borders. The area mostly functions as a single jurisdiction for international travel purposes, with a common visa policy. The area is named after the 1985 Schengen Agreement signed in Schengen, Luxembourg.

Of the 27 EU member states, 22 participate in the Schengen Area. Of the five EU members that are not part of the Schengen Area, four – Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, and Romania – are legally obliged to join the area in the future; Ireland maintains an opt-out. The four European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, are not members of the EU, but have signed agreements in association with the Schengen Agreement. Three European microstates that are not members of the European Union but which are enclaves or semi-enclave within an EU member state – Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City – are de facto part of the Schengen Area."

They can be reinstated temporarily:

So the story is that the OP is British but living abroad, the OP's parents are British but live abroad too but in a different Schengen area country to the OP, and entered the OP's country illegally or not as the case may be, so she is going to report them to the authorities of the country she lives in, having let them stay with her illegally since Christmas?

Have I got that right?

I understood the OPs parents were travelling from the UK
Tier4ParentProblem · 04/01/2021 12:59

@GreenlandTheMovie no you haven't at all.

Parents tier 4 south east London. Asked us to come for Xmas but we didn't due to quarantine restrictions. So turned up unannounced a couple of days ago having done midnight flit just before brexit. OP not happy as job very insecure and lives in gossipy place full of worried elderly people.

"as new rules is only 90 days on eu i believe for uk citizens it seems this isn't actually going to be poilced if so easy to travel between"

I suppose it could be policed if governments really wanted to (e.g. checking your mobile phone location) but it would be harder, yes.
The thing is, even before Schengen, it was possible to cross borders on the continent without a passport relatively easily - walking through the forest in the night, for example. It's not the same as living on an island.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 04/01/2021 13:01

@Gwenhwyfar yes more transmissible it seems and likely to of originated in the uk, but that isn't definate yet I don't believe although its looking that way , or it could of come from elsewhere and just spread hugely
It is selfish and dangerous of the Op parents to of gone , maybe if they had done test and quarantine if visiting country allowed that would be different.
But open borders is whats allowing this to spread, I think if in summer were numbers were low if the whole works had shut borders and got things under control in their countries we may be in a better place , all the travelling can't help.
I believe flights from sa are not allowed to uk at moment due to the strain there and guess no way to beat that as they can be by air only

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 04/01/2021 13:04

Whole world not works

ilovesooty · 04/01/2021 13:04

@Butchyrestingface

If there is a ban on entrants from Britain it really must be a country with bloody porous borders that hasn't noticed a plane or other form of transport arriving

Nah, they came in stealth-like, traversing the mountains, like the Von Trapps.

Life hasn't been the same since I discovered that in reality the Von Trapp family simply got on a train unhindered. Grin
pinfloy · 04/01/2021 13:05

@donewithitalltodayandxmas - Denmark has border controls despite being part of Schengen, just in case you were planning a trip :-)

Terracottasaur · 04/01/2021 13:07

I don’t agree with what your parents did at all, but it truly makes me so sad that Covid has brought people to the point of reporting their own parents. It feels like something fundamental has broken in the way we respond to one another. I don’t know if things can ever go back to the way things were if people truly consider reporting their own parents to the authorities. How do you come back from that?

Unsure33 · 04/01/2021 13:07

I am with you OP

I would be fuming . One negative test is not proof they don’t have the virus and they have come from an area where the new strain is rising . And for those saying you should not have let them in . That’s ridiculous they arrived on the doorstep and unfortunately they are her parents . And as far as they are concerned they don’t have it ( ignoring the fact that they could have it or picked it up on the way )

They have been selfish and broken the rules and put you in a ridiculous situation.

But unfortunately I don’t think reporting them will make any difference.

They could still get caught out on the journey back though . Who knows.
@Nanny0gg I wish I could be more assertive. But dm is v narcissistic and it doesn't work.
You can choose to be more assertive.

I would not allow them to stay.

Rollmopsrule · 04/01/2021 13:10

The only British in the village 🤣
You sound a bit OTT op. Dont report your own parents. Have words, ban them from your house, make them get another test whatever but don't report them.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 04/01/2021 13:11

@pinfloy not planning no , just shocked that no borders for foreign nationals
Plus I am too much of a rule follower , I feel guilty at customs for no reason as it is and I am always the one to get the extra checks

FatCatThinCat · 04/01/2021 13:12

@Whammyyammy

"British variant ", day off school is it op?
That's what it's being called outside of Britain.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 04/01/2021 13:13

During the first lockdown, DD1 (14) was out with a Chinese friend of hers, who received such abuse from strangers as if she had Covid - she has been living in the UK most of her life FFS.

But no, don't report your parents.

FairyontopofthetreeBatman · 04/01/2021 13:17

You’re getting a lot of grief Confused you are right to be angry with them for their disregard of both the rules and your wishes.

I don’t see much point in reporting them now, and if they left 31/12 they might not technically have broken the rules anyway.

I do think though that you should tell them they are putting your jobs at risk due to gossip and local reaction to the rule break and they need to go and stay in the nearest town.

That will get you out of the firing line and also help reinforce that they can’t trample all over you.
