AIBU.. to report my own parents (coronavirus)

Tier4ParentProblem · 04/01/2021 11:28

Sorry, NC as outing..

They are in a tier 4 area.

I live abroad in a country which has struggled hugely with coronavirus and has put a ban on Brits entering there. I’ve avoided the virus so far with extreme diligence as I work a zero hour contract with no sick pay..

They turned up unannounced on my doorstep.

Whilst I’m pleased to see them, I’m furious that after all our care and sacrifice, they’ll have brought not only the virus but the “British variant” and then when it’s reported in the press it will be patently obvious to the neighbours who is responsible. Also, whilst being not an at risk group, we’ve been really careful to minimize our risk precisely so this nightmare can end sooner and we can visit them safely, in the uk. I’m cross with their arrogance. They won’t even isolate in my home either, they miss shopping and eating out...

So... WIBU to report them?

So - they haven't got Covid.

Have you thought about what will actually happen if you report them? Not just to them in the immediate timeline, but to your family relationships?

Bythemillpond · 04/01/2021 11:42

How do you know they have Covid?

LindaEllen · 04/01/2021 11:43

Someone turning up at my house unannounced always makes me want to phone the police to have them removed .. never mind in covid times.

#antisocial

@CremeEggThief

Hmmm
Quite.

If there is a ban on entrants from Britain it really must be a country with bloody porous borders that hasn't noticed a plane or other form of transport arriving. I expect to see an updated position statement when the OP realises the number of loopholes in the story. Includng the "zero hour contract" which is an interestingly British form of words. Many countries have forms of unreliable employment, but I don't know of a single other country outside Britain that calls them that!

Mrsjayy · 04/01/2021 11:45

If they had a test and are negative the "British strain" isn't hiding in their pockets ready to puff out into your countryHmm

SilverStarburst · 04/01/2021 11:45

I'd be very cross, do they not see what they have done is daft?

Moondust001 · 04/01/2021 11:46

@Tier4ParentProblem

I think they didn’t tell us because they knew we would be unhappy. My Dh is furious so I’m caught between everyone. They just wanted to see the DC.

They got out of the uk with a negative pcr test (thankfully) and then drove for a ridiculously long time over various mountain borders (Schengen!!)

You don't need a PCR test to "get out of the UK"?

They don't just have covid - they have that nasty British covid, apparently. If there is one thing we should have kept Cummings around for it would be to rebrand the new varient into any other shorthand name. Grin

Tier4ParentProblem · 04/01/2021 11:48

@Moondust001 in British. Am I allowed to use words from my native languages a site for people from there?Hmm

Although I think if the story is that unbelievable it sort of points to IANBU then.

But if you can get into France you can drive anywhere if you just say you're transiting, it isn't hard.

Wonder what the YABU people would think if it was an "AIBU to enter the uk illegally" thread...

Nah, they came in stealth-like, traversing the mountains, like the Von Trapps.

Tier4ParentProblem · 04/01/2021 11:50

@Moondust001 you need a pcr neg test to enter France via the shuttle. It's on their site. Go check.

I work in a school setting (not teacher) and I have seen plenty of students testing negative then positive on their second test a few days later. You have to take two tests a week apart for that reason where I live.

Reporting your own parents? Nice going, Ms. Parsons ...

The nasty British COVID is quite inconvenient when you ARE British living abroad. If my boss knew they were here I wouldn't be allowed in next week.

And are you fine with them coming back next week having toured the busy bars and shops on their city break?

@ElizaLaLa

Who exactly would you report them to?

This sounds like the biggest load of bollocks.

I'm not in the uk and even people with residency are being turned away at the borders.

There's a reporting thing on the gov. Uk website

BrokenCircle · 04/01/2021 11:53

I wouldn’t have let them into my home!

FourTeaFallOut · 04/01/2021 11:54

I'm not at all invested in what happens, op. I'm just surprised that you diagnosed them with British covid on the doorstep.

You know they have covid and also the new variant?

Do you live on an island @ElizaLaLa ? There are many roads into most countries. TBH, even the motorway border isn't policed because people live and workon opposite sides.

The law is no passengers entering by air or sea. It's all info online in various places, so I won't explain further.

OP posts:
Tier4ParentProblem · 04/01/2021 11:59

@Notimeforaname because there has already been a case of the "British variant" found in this country and I've already had to fend off lots of unwelcome "jokey" comments from associates. I'm British and it's unpleasant.

If, god forbid, I ended up with it, it would've reported in the press as a case in x village, and being the only Brit in x village it would not be a nice position to be in.

So did they break the law, seeing as they didn't enter by air or sea?

I mean, I get that you say you're not going to explain further, but I suspect that's for reasons other than the accessibility of the 'online info in various places'.

I think the law broken is British law, no? Are tier 4 people allowed to mix households and holiday abroad?

What would happen if you reported them? I think it's very harsh on your parents tbh. Just give them a stern word and let them know you are not happy. That would be punishment enough for them..

Notimeforaname · 04/01/2021 12:02

Yes but this in no way proves they ''will have brought it with them'' you didn't say 'if' ..you said WHEN its reported..neighbours will ''know it was your parents ''
Hmm
