AIBU.. to report my own parents (coronavirus)

Tier4ParentProblem · 04/01/2021 11:28

Sorry, NC as outing..

They are in a tier 4 area.

I live abroad in a country which has struggled hugely with coronavirus and has put a ban on Brits entering there. I’ve avoided the virus so far with extreme diligence as I work a zero hour contract with no sick pay..

They turned up unannounced on my doorstep.

Whilst I’m pleased to see them, I’m furious that after all our care and sacrifice, they’ll have brought not only the virus but the “British variant” and then when it’s reported in the press it will be patently obvious to the neighbours who is responsible. Also, whilst being not an at risk group, we’ve been really careful to minimize our risk precisely so this nightmare can end sooner and we can visit them safely, in the uk. I’m cross with their arrogance. They won’t even isolate in my home either, they miss shopping and eating out...

So... WIBU to report them?

@Nanny0gg I wish I could be more assertive. But dm is v narcissistic and it doesn't work.

So this thread is just a vent, as you are actually going to do nothing, you should have mentioned this before op. If you’re too scared will your DH do anything or will you stop him?

Tier4ParentProblem · 04/01/2021 12:40

@alpinia well exactly. My small children were there when I opened the door.

What the hell have we become? sad
What the UK has become is one of the countries with the worst record on handling Covid in the world . What we also seem to have become is a country populated by selfish numpties who understand history as little as they understand how to behave in a pandemic.

Fun as this has been with its detour through the mountains and xenophobic undercurrents, now we've reached the pinnacle of Godwin's Law, there's nowhere really for it to go.Hmm

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 04/01/2021 12:43

@Gwenhwyfar I have read the thread but uk were never part of schengen agreement and not at all now
So basically there are no border controls in the eu ? That is a little worrying and any nationality can travel freely between all with no visa's?
Op intermational travel is banned in tier 4 ? And it would be a fineI I think
But if your serious with reporting it would also be prudent to do in your country so they go in quarantine etc ? As reporting just in uk is shutting door after horse has bolted.
And realistically they have had to at least go through one border and been allowed , so therefore anyone could be going to and from countries and the new variant has been found in many countries

Bythemillpond · 04/01/2021 12:43

I thought once you are in mainland EU there are no borders or checks between countries. If you are driving you can go anywhere.

Tier4ParentProblem · 04/01/2021 12:44

@Lollypop701

DH silently seething but won't do anything as it's done now and they know how we feel and don't care.

We could use the gov yo website to report a breach of restrictions, or do nothing and hope that this is one of the little rule breaks that doesn't have any negative consequences.

The AIBU post is to help mull it over. And very helpful it has been. Based on the responses I've decided not to report.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/01/2021 12:44

"op story sounds strange as if visitors are banned. , how did they get in
Bu road is there no checks so anyone can travel all over europe ?"

OMG. This has literally been explained many times!
They got in via another country.
No, there are not generally any checks between countries in the Schengen area of the EU and some other countries e.g. UK and Ireland have a common travel area and I think you can travel freely between Norway and Sweden. Some of these borders were reinstated during the pandemic, but it would be impossible to police them all anyway.

"I mean this was peoples worry about being part of eu , all the extra paperwork and how hard it would be gojng from country to country"

What are you on about? The EU was about making all that EASIER. The UK chose to opt-out from Schengen and has fewer border entry points than many countries with long land borders anyway and already had a common travel area with ROI.

Now, that we have left, travel will be harder - need to queue with all passports, need a passport valid for +6 months, EU nationals will soon need a passport to enter the UK whereas before they could use their national ID cards.

Norah8 · 04/01/2021 12:45

I think you'd be unreasonable to report them.
But I agree it is wrong.

What do your neighbours think of two elderly British residents turning up when they shouldn't be there anyway? Any vulnerable neighbours likely to contract covid?

Notimeforaname · 04/01/2021 12:45

My sister has been quiet the same over xmas. She told my parents not to have extended family members at the house for xmas..but a week before that she went to said extended family members house and let her newborn be passed around.🤣 thatvwas ok though because they 'just picked the baby up' and she couldn't say no' Hmm

Shes also planning to go outside her allowed zone next week because she wants to but told my parents not to have anybody in their home from 'the outside 'Grin people are gas

Australia77 · 04/01/2021 12:46

I am sorry, but some of these responses are giving me a good laugh, which I really need today. @Butchyrestingface

brilliant response!

But seriously OP - "nasty British Covid"? WTF is that about?

Tier4ParentProblem · 04/01/2021 12:46

@wherewildthingsare they're all elderly yes. I hope they don't find out.

OP posts:
Yohoheaveho · 04/01/2021 12:47

I'd make them turn around and go home
how dare they treat you like this, they know that you won't like something and rather than respect your wishes (like a normal adult) they ambush you and force you into going along with what they want🤬

@CovidCarol

Also wtf has happened to the world? Why are people snitching on their own parents and children? Maybe research how Hitler gained control of Nazi Germany, especially the Hitler Youth.

Fucking frightening isn't it, you can see how it happens.
What the hell have we become? Sad

Society’s vulnerability to indoctrination to the hyperbolic media frightens me way more than any virus. One day, North Korea closed the borders to South Korea and people accepted it. People accepted Nazi Germany. People accepted Mussolini and Stalin. It’s terrifying. The government and media pitting the public against each other, dividing families and communities and making us fear and hate each other Sad

@Australia77 you're quoting a sarcastic poster, not me.

My sister and her husband all over. outraged at one thing.. complicit with the next. But still complaining about people being too stupid to follow rules. Grin

Gwenhwyfar · 04/01/2021 12:47

"@Gwenhwyfar I have read the thread but uk were never part of schengen agreement and not at all now"

Irrelevant as OP's parents travelled from the UK to a country that did allow them in and then travelled from there to another Schengen country.

"So basically there are no border controls in the eu ? "

Not normally between Schengen countries, no. You sometimes pass an old building that used to be passport control. I believe some of the borders were reinstated during the pandemic.

AnneOfTeenFables · 04/01/2021 12:49

Why would you decide not to report when the majority response on the poll is that you should?

Tier4ParentProblem · 04/01/2021 12:49

@AnneOfTeenFables I didn't see a poll! Based on the responses. Can you see the poll on the app?

OP posts:
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 04/01/2021 12:50

You can look up the rules and tier 4 is o travel abroad apart from legally allowed reasons it says , so I do think it would be law and they would / will receive a fine whichI believe start at £200 upwards and yes people have been fined for breaking rules throughout .
But countries if they have banned certain nationalites need to have border control and take responsibility as well ? Have you at least managed to confine them to your house so they are in affect quarantined ?

Cadent · 04/01/2021 12:50

OP, can’t you ask them to go to a hotel?

Gwenhwyfar · 04/01/2021 12:50

"Yeah it's like normal Covid but it's got a blue passport and Union Jack underpants on."

And 70% more transmissible according to what I read although it now seems one of the South African variants is the most dangerous.

Australia77 · 04/01/2021 12:51

Maybe OP, but you get my point. I don't agree with your parents travelling when they weren't meant to but this idea of somehow the UK being the next Wuhan is really fucking annoying. Viruses mutate - it is what they do. And yes you are being very unreasonable to consider reporting your parents. Who on earth would dream of doing that? What has become of us?

Gwenhwyfar · 04/01/2021 12:52

"But countries if they have banned certain nationalites need to have border control and take responsibility as well ? "

That's like saying it's OK to break the law unless you get caught. It's up to the law breakers not to do it.
