I believe the concept of 'family money' is a load of bullshit. DH agrees.
Yep me too. Seems to be the people who don't work (usually the woman) who like to think of their partner's money as family money. What a shocker 🤣
LaceyBetty · 03/01/2021 14:46

It's ok to get a non-rescued pet.

Don't have more kids than you can afford and plan for contingencies in this regard.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 03/01/2021 14:46

Happily dump the kids? Hell yea and I pay a lot for it too

LadyDique · 03/01/2021 14:46

That many high earners want their heads examining as their actual lifestyles seem far from desirable.

I can't see the point in having a £150k salary when you have to work 50-60 hours a week, barely see the dc and can only afford a 2 bed flat in central London..

What's the point? Move a couple of hours away, get a bog standard £25k job, buy a lovely big house, work 35 hours a week and spend time with your family. Nicer life all around.

SimonJT · 03/01/2021 14:47

@JonasKahnwald

Also if I meet a sahp in real life I'm massively embarrassed for them. Their life and relationship must be shit.
I don’t feel embarrassed for them, but I do feel they are setting a bad example for their child by failing to work and be an independent adult.

Obviously its completely different if the child has a disablilty or additional need as services are poor in the UK for children with additional needs.

Icenii · 03/01/2021 14:47

That even if vegatarianism or vegsnism isn't the target, people must reduce their meat consumption. I think that those who continue to over consume more meat products than their body needs will eventually be naturally selected out of exisitance and we will live in world where people are socially responsible in what they consume. You see this happening already with obesity and heart disease. Humans do not need to stuff huge quantities of shit meat down their gullets weekly.

That vegan and vegatarian food is healthy. Its simple food without meat or animal produce, food you grow. If you are a meat eater and believe all vegans eat mass produced fake products, I suspect this tells us more about your mass produced diet.

funinthesun19 · 03/01/2021 14:48

I think of “family money” can work if it’s a nuclear family. When the children have different parents it all becomes very tricky because stepparents don’t want to be paying for someone else’s kids.

JonasKahnwald · 03/01/2021 14:48

So you're saying our grandparents and great-grandparents and great-great (etc) grandparents lives and relationships were all shit? Multi-generations? Because it's only been for the last 40 odd years that it has been common for both parents to work. Until then, every family had a SAHM in general.

Not where I come from it hasn't. Women have always worked. But then I don't live in a middle class bubble. I earn middle class money but have a working class upbringing and work ethic.

Icenii · 03/01/2021 14:49

Both adults in my household work. I believe life would be better if one stayed at home or both worked part time. There is more to life than working.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 03/01/2021 14:50

Ok,I’m in london because I don’t want to live in the regions in a boxy off plan house. I don’t want that life
Don’t want bog standard life or dinner at cafe rouge or a regular job
I want to be in a world city where I use my specialist skills to the max.

My grandparents were working class, neither of my grandmas did paid work, they had too many kids for it even to be a possibility.

But some people earn that salary working part time living in the north. It's a myth that all high earners work ridiculous hours and have hardly any disposable income.

JonasKahnwald · 03/01/2021 14:52

I think I feel embarrassed for them because its an indicator of a certain type of imbalanced relationship, a certain type of man who is happy to have a woman totally dependent on him. I find it creepy. And yes I would hate to think that my kids thought not having any influence over money coming into the household was normal or even desirable.

Ginfordinner · 03/01/2021 14:52

What kind of job pays this kind of wages part time not in the south east?

funinthesun19 · 03/01/2021 14:52

FWIW I don’t eat much meat and I actually prefer veggie options but only because I prefer the taste, not because I’m told to. So a vegetarian lasagne is nicer than a beef one for example. And I love fruit and veg.
Eating a little piece of ham for my lunch doesn’t make me part of any problem there may be.

TarquinLikesPlaygroup · 03/01/2021 14:53

I can't get enough of the Kardashians

I find babies (including my own) deeply boring but love the toddler years. I sometimes read those overbearing MIL/DM threads with a bit of envy.

High earners don’t necessarily work long hours at the expense of seeing their families. It’s mid earners who do this. The sacrifices are usually made on the way to becoming a higher earner, those years of hard slog when rewards don’t match the effort. But!it can pay off later.

Icenii · 03/01/2021 14:56

fun I think the aim should be meat reduction, like you. But I think the whole industry needs overhauling.

Really? Until recently it was unheard of for the housewife to have a job outside of the house. The woman's job was to cook, clean, wash, etc and prepare and keep house. And when women married, (even got engaged) they were expected to give up their job if they worked ie typist/receptionist/telephone exchange operator/secretary etc. In fact, it was really only the middle and upper class women who were 'allowed' to retain their jobs and work outside the home. Working class women never had that opportunity, they were expected to 'keep house'. This is basic History and Sociology.

Yes! The "Spending anything over £100 must be a family decision!" rule. Not in my house its not. I even went and bought myself a car with my own money and didn't tell my husband 😲 shock horror!

I love my two bed flat in a nice area of London, although it has recently been turned into a three bed, its also a very good size (1,400sqft) has underground parking and a porter.

I don’t however earn £150K, but I am a higher earner, I also work part time and apart from school hours I have very little time when I’m not with my son.

There aren’t many places where a household income of £25k could buy a house that would fit in the big catergory. The average new three bed semi is around 900sqft.
