Bloody joggers

I've had enough of them.
Today I was going to pick my daughter up and these idiots are all over the road.
The sun was very low today and it was very hard too see the road.
I swear I nearly knocked 2 idiots down who were running on the road.
I get people need to get out and keep fit but keep to the bloody pavements and if the pavement is too icy then bloody stay at home and stop putting road users at risk.
I mean can you imagine the hassle a driver would be put through if we ran over one of these selfish idiots...either stay on the pavements or stay indoors..

Ridiculous of them!

Definitely a danger to have what are basically pedestrians all over the road - that’s why we have separate pavements. And they should be aware that the sun makes a difference.

I do jog, but I only do it on grass/ mud, because it’s really bad for your joints on tarmac. I walk up to the park as my warm up (about 7-10 mins) then I run around (it’s a big park but you could obviously go several times around a smaller park) and then warm down by walking back.

Feathersinthehead · 02/01/2021 21:42

Low winter sun is dangerous, not just direct beams but reflecting from surface water. A parent killed the older brother of a child in my class, school run, in a hurry, no sunglasses and he was cycling to his secondary.
You need to be more responsible, there are a lot of things on the road that aren’t driving a car.

Benjispruce2 · 02/01/2021 21:43

I ran in the road today(which was quiet) to give pedestrians space so that I didn’t breathe on them.

museumum · 02/01/2021 21:43

I drive, jog and cycle - some days I can’t even work out how to hate myself enough!

Or we could just all try to get by and tolerate others with a bit of kindness?

redcandlelight · 02/01/2021 21:43

if you can't see properly you shouldn't drive.
sunglasses and visor down help and driving slow enough that you can quickly stop should you need to.

AIMD · 02/01/2021 21:45

People use the roads while running or cycling.
Sometimes visibility is low due to low sun, fog and a ton of other factors.

Everyone just needs to be sensible and respectful.

If visibility is so low you can’t see far ahead you need to slow right down.

BIWI · 02/01/2021 21:45

It's all very well saying you should run in a park, but if you live in a city you don't always have easy access to a park - and even if you are heading to the park, you may have to run a reasonable distance (by road/pavement) to get there.

At this time of the year, pavements are also pretty dodgy for runners. Lots of build of of wet leaves makes them very slippery, and often conceal uneven paving stones - making the flatter surface of the road much safer.

ChestnutStuffing · 02/01/2021 21:47

I should say - when there is a pavement. If there isn't, then the side of the road it is.

But the thing with joggers is that are small and they need to consider if they will be visible to cars. The sun is tricky as it's just for a short time every day and some times of year it is an issue, and that may not be clear to people who aren't driving.

But I've seen joggers on the road while it was snowing, so low visibility, banks, and slippery!

That is just not safe.

Anyway - busy sidewalks and busy roads aren't ideal for many joggers a lot of the time. Kind of like busy walk/bike trails actually often aren't suitable for serious bikers.

Againstmachine · 02/01/2021 21:48

Person drives who can't see, but it's everyone else's fault, what if it had been a horse that could have been disastrous for the people in the car and the horse and rider.

1Morewineplease · 02/01/2021 21:49
@1Morewineplease I don’t run in my local park as it is busy with dog walkers, families and children cycling/ scootering so makes SD difficult.
Our park , which is covered on three sides by A roads, is over 450 acres... plenty of room for all . Cyclists use it for on and off road, dog walkers stick to the fields and the paths are totally clear for joggers who only need to shift a few feet to get past a pram as the paths are very wide.
Yet bloody joggers insist on running in the bloody roads which are barely wide enough for vehicles to pass.

ichundich · 02/01/2021 21:49

Some people are just morons. I regularly see joggers on the road between mine and the next village, where the speed limit is 60 mph, whilst there are 2 amazing parks, acres of fields with bridle paths and a nature reserve all within 2 miles from here. It's as if their run only happened if someome actually saw them or they posted about it on SM...

Bookrat · 02/01/2021 21:50

Bloody drivers.
I've had enough of them.

That's not alright is it? Fuck off.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 02/01/2021 21:50

I run in the road round country lanes a lot. There's no pavement.

I always run into the traffic and wear some thing high viz and reflective. Still almost got hit by a man who was texting and didn't see me til the last second

Grapewrath · 02/01/2021 21:51

Yanbu
Roads are not for pedestrians

HappyNewYear2021 · 02/01/2021 21:51

I agree - please wear clothing that reflects when it is dark.
Don't run in the road unless really necessary.
Please be aware that joggers are vulnerable and need to actually consider their own welfare and not assume everyone else should see them.

OverByYer · 02/01/2021 21:52

@1Morewineplease your park sounds lovely, sadly my nearest park is nothing like that

Cam77 · 02/01/2021 21:53

Buy some sunglasses!

Eckhart · 02/01/2021 21:54

Where do you suggest runners run on the parts of road where pavements are full, OP?

I agree that it's not ideal for drivers, but it's not ideal for runners either.

Pedestrians are allowed to be on the road. There's a lot of runners at the moment because gyms are shut. The pavements aren't always big enough.

If you're worried that the sun glare is such that you can't see obstructions in the road, have you tried driving to Castle Barnard? I believe that's the state of the art eye test for drivers. You can't really know you can drive safely until you've done this.

mrjuno · 02/01/2021 21:54

I have struggled with low sun glare, but have absolutely no gripes about joggers.

Planty13 · 02/01/2021 21:55

YABU IMO. I live by a lot of country roads and plenty people have to jog on the road as there are no paths. If you have that much issue seeing them, maybe you shouldn’t be driving.

alloutofcareunits · 02/01/2021 21:55

I've been forced to run on the road many times because cyclists are riding on the pavement - whole fucking families of them! It also appears that if a runner is on the pavement and needs to pass by a pedestrian, the expectation is that the person running should move out of the pedestrians way. Can't win

OhDear2200 · 02/01/2021 21:57

Why are people so cross at the moment? Have we got no tolerance for anyone any longer?

You do realise that “joggers” are people? That most people are generally ok, and nice? Just like most drivers.
Jesus, take some deep breaths and save your anger for something real.

Blibbyblobby · 02/01/2021 21:57

Sooooo sick of entitled drivers who genuinely believe the purpose of roads is to exclude everyone who isn’t in a car so that drivers can just drive without paying attention.

Tootletum · 02/01/2021 21:58

OK I think this thread has just made my mind up. Mumsnet is not something I need in my life any more. It is almost never positive or supportive, of anyone. Bye.

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/01/2021 21:59

Runners are the new cyclists.

They own the road, didnt you know?! They can ignore all road rules that us mere drivers have to obey, and when some poor fucker hits them when they were dressed all in black on a dark road, not on the pavement and running the wrong way (not into oncoming traffic) straight over a junction it will be the drivers fault.
