Bloody joggers

I've had enough of them.
Today I was going to pick my daughter up and these idiots are all over the road.
The sun was very low today and it was very hard too see the road.
I swear I nearly knocked 2 idiots down who were running on the road.
I get people need to get out and keep fit but keep to the bloody pavements and if the pavement is too icy then bloody stay at home and stop putting road users at risk.
I mean can you imagine the hassle a driver would be put through if we ran over one of these selfish idiots...either stay on the pavements or stay indoors..

I am a runner, I consider myself polite to all around me.
I always wear hi vis.
Yes at times I run on the road as it sometimes can be the only way to gain access to bridleways, coast path and wooded areas.
I always run into traffic, on the narrow lanes I stop to allow traffic past.

When on paths it can be very difficult at the minute with SD no one wants a runner puffing past close by. So yes I check traffic and if safe will run on the road. If not safe I walk until I can pass safely.

I always announce my presence if coming up behind people as its easy to startle them sometimes.

The roads are for all users not exclusively just for vehicles. We have a lot of cyclists, walkers and horse riders in our area.

I drive too but choose not to get wound up by other road users whoever they may be.

Roads are for traffic

and there you have it, a driver who doesn't want to share the roads with others, will also probably tell you roads were built for cars....

ArcheryAnnie · 07/01/2021 14:22

Yup - roads are for, er, road users, not just for cars.

GettingAwayWithIt · 07/01/2021 14:33

I agree, it’s dangerous for pedestrians to be in the road including ‘joggers’.

While we’re at it, can we also ban cars from parking on pavements? If it’s wrong for pedestrians to be on the road surely it’s wrong for cars to be on the path?

GettingAwayWithIt · 07/01/2021 14:38

PS: sunglasses aren’t just for summer, they’re brilliant in winter when there’s the combination of low winter sun and wet, shiny roads. The darker the lens the better Smile

meanderingthrough · 07/01/2021 14:45

I'm going for a run after I've finished work and it'll be dark. I may have to use the road at a couple of points. If you're in a car please bear in mind I have as much right to be on the road as you. I'll be courteous, well lit, keeping my wits about me and observing the laws of the land. Just checking you will too? :)

The pavements next to the road near my house at the moment are covered in ice and are too dangerous to walk on, so at times on my way to work, I had to walk in the road.

But its a 30 limit and therefore I expect drivers to be aware that this might happen, as thats why we have 30 limits in urban areas - because other road users might do something unexpected and you might have to stop quickly in an emergency.

Ditto children running unexpectedly out into the road. Or all sorts of other things.

Is this really news to some poster? Never come across it before, even though it forms part of the driving test, eh?

BIWI · 07/01/2021 15:10

All roads around us are now 20mph @GreenlandTheMovie! (Not that you'd know, watching the cars speed past)

GettingAwayWithIt · 07/01/2021 15:11

@GreenlandTheMovie I was being a bit sarky, I myself ran on the roads after work last night as the footpaths were lethal! Stuck to quiet streets which meant a few mindnumbing loops but whatever gets it done Smile All courteous drivers too. Saw a number of walkers in the road too.

Ah, OK!

My worst experience was when the pavements were literally blocked with snow, it was piled up so deep that it didn't even look like you could walk on it, but of course the roads had been cleared. It was actually really quiet, but still didn't prevent the occasional driver trying to mow you down on what was obviously a struggle to get to work on foot.

RincewindsHat · 07/01/2021 15:26

IMO all joggers, cyclists and motorcyclists should have to wear hi-vis vests at a minimum by law. The number of people on rural roads near me jogging in the dark or near dark in dark clothing with no lights or hi-vis is incredible, often with headphones in so they cannot hear traffic and have no idea what's going on around them. They assume that because they can see cars, cars can see them and sometimes it's just not the case that they are easily visible from a car.

I mean not running people over is driving 101, I'm a little worried you find it challenging Confused

We still have roman roads?
MiddlesexGirl · 07/01/2021 15:41

Some pavements are dangerous too.
Uneven paving, slippery in cold or wet weather, other users obstructing.

And where I am I can choose to walk 1 mile along a narrow road or run along it. Guess which one is safer?

It would be nice if there were greater acceptance of running, which is great for both physical and mental wellbeing and therefore reduces dependence on the NHS - especially as it's one of the few forms of exercise still permitted.

MiddlesexGirl · 07/01/2021 15:41

And yes - there are plenty of Roman roads where I live.

Anordinarymum · 07/01/2021 15:43

i think joggers should stick to the pavement or if it is icy then they should jog in parks. Jogging on the road designed for motorists is bloody dangerous. It makes sense not to jog on the road. I wouldn't dream of doing that. My life is precious thank you

BIWI · 07/01/2021 15:51

Then I'll have to teleport to our local park then

Hmm

What a stupid comment

Phew...I'm glad I'm a runner not a jogger then. And I'm glad you're not in charge.

I ran on the road in the dark last night (there are few pavements where I live and that was the only time I could run).
I wore leggings with reflective dots, a top with reflective stripes, flashing arm bands, a head torch and a bright light on the back of my head.

I know cars could see me as they gave me room WAY before they reached me (thank you).

Some roads are indeed only suitable for motorised vehicles and other road users are not allowed on them (e.g motorways), but unless prohibited a road user is anyone who uses the road.

tenlittlecygnets · 07/01/2021 16:07

The sun was very low today and it was very hard too see the road.

Well, wear sunglasses and drive more slowly and take more care. It's up to you as a driver to ensure you can see other road users. Other people have the right to use the roads too!

Could you have walked to pick up your dc?

GettingAwayWithIt · 07/01/2021 16:10

Yes, there are still Roman roads - there’s one near where I live (which, incidentally, I wouldn’t dare run on as it’s like a race track down there)

I do wonder if those opposed to pedestrians being on the road because it’s for the exclusive use of motorists actually ever go anywhere on foot? Or if they’ve noticed the shocking state of some of the pavements?

thefallthroughtheair · 07/01/2021 16:12

But if they jog on the pavement they're accused of being selfish bastards killing the grannies with their Covid miasma.
