AIBU to think that the majority of people on here are middle class and high earners?

Just curious.

I'm not but I think a lot are. There are some very skewed views on here.

CountryLady1 · 01/01/2021 13:56

Define high earners... to some may be 30k others may be 100k.

sunshineandshowers21 · 01/01/2021 13:59

or like to pretend they are...

Kaylasmum49 · 01/01/2021 14:00

Well our joint income is around 24k so to me high earnings would be over 40k

Useruseruserusee · 01/01/2021 14:00

Depends what you call a higher earner really. I come from a very working class family but have a job where I earn well - never know really what class to put myself in.

BlusteryLake · 01/01/2021 14:01

Mumsnet started out as a forum aimed at middle class mothers, so you still feel the legacy of that, but it is much more diverse than it used to be.

Sideorderofchips · 01/01/2021 14:02

Erm. No. I'm not a high earner

Kaylasmum49 · 01/01/2021 14:03

I also come from a working class family. I am a checkout operator and my partner is a gardener. I just feel that some posters on here are very judgemental when it comes to earnings/class/profession.

When I first came on here, it felt like that to me. Now, I just think that there is a vocal minority whose voice skewers the majority.

MatildaTheCat · 01/01/2021 14:06

They may have more time to be posting on here.

This. ^

Most people exaggerate/lie on the social media and message forums on the internet. And Mumsnet is no exception.

Many on here claim to be on £100K + a year, but in reality, less than 5% of the population of the UK is on that kind of salary. I take what people say with a huge pinch of salt.

The people who've got 4 or 5 ovens, and want to know how best to invest £75K they have spare, and who claim to make savings of £3K a month, make me laugh. In real life, these people don't exist.

These same people know lots of women who start having babies at 45, and they always live 'very rurally' and have lots of land. Oh, and they always have a degree (or 2!) from a red brick University, and a husband who works long hours, and has a long commute.

It's quite entertaining to read their fantasist posts though. Grin

People are obsessed with 'class' on MN.

Does it really matter what your opinions are based on class?. If you're a horrible twat, then you're a horrible twat, regardless of how much money you have.

DowntonCrabby · 01/01/2021 14:12

We’re a working class family on very average salaries.

Funkypolar · 01/01/2021 14:12

Don’t believe everything you read on Mumsnet.

One in five people earn the minimum wage. One in three children grow up in poverty.

Butchyrestingface · 01/01/2021 14:13

I think there are a lot of posters who like to think they are. Xmas Grin

Some of them are also talking loads of nonsense. They are the lady equivalent of the man living in his mother's basement or they are quite literally a man living in his mother's basement.
Kaylasmum49 · 01/01/2021 14:15

Why would anyone want to come on here and pretend to be something they aren't? Maybe I'm just naive.

I used to think that mn was a lovely place to talk/get advice/ share things etc but sadly I have seen and been on the receiving end of some really unkind and judgemental people.

OP posts:
CherryValanc · 01/01/2021 14:16

There are very few high earners. Anyone on 24k thinks 40k is high, but those on 40k think they aren't and a high earner is on 80k, but those on 80k think it's people on 120k that are the high earners.

Just like no one is rich, and very few well off.

JorisBonson · 01/01/2021 14:16

As working class as they come, average salary. So no.

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 01/01/2021 14:18

Everyone earning more than you is called "rich" or "high earner" on MN for a start Grin
or there's a current denying that anyone can earn more than the minimum wage. You just need to look at the price of properties and holidays to realise people do have money in this country, and a lot of it.

But just think about it, who can spend their days on MN? It's either people who don't work so have no income, or people in a senior enough position that they can waste time on here.

Obviously there are also busy professionals ,SAH parents, but it's a wide mix.

WhatAreWordsWorth · 01/01/2021 14:19

There are definitely a lot of pretenders.

Also, I think that on threads such as “how much do you have in savings?” people with £10k saved are probably more likely to respond than those who have hardly anything - which is apparently around 6.5m people. In comparison, around 1.2m people in the UK earn over £100k.

I do think that MN is skewed towards higher earners, but posters who earn more are probably more likely to post about it than those on low to average salaries. And also, a lot of what you read will be over-exaggerated, or pure fantasy.

cactusisblooming · 01/01/2021 14:21

It would certainly seem as if the majority are MC judging by the 'what do you earn?' and 'how many holidays are you going on this year?' threads. However, I'm sure many posters lie use creative license with the truth, I remember one poster was caught out on a number of untruths relating to photos they were claiming was of their home.

That was a really weird thread!
Kaylasmum49 · 01/01/2021 14:24

There is a huge amount of snobbery on here. I have no time for that!

OP posts:
Itawapuddytat · 01/01/2021 14:24

Middle class background but average salaries - so, in my case it's "no".

I think high-earners are a minority on MN, as they are in real life.
