To ask when Christmas ends for you

I feel January the 1st is when Christmas ends for and when I take my decorations down.

@starrynight19

We tend to have one last nice family dinner on New Year’s Day and then everything down on the 2nd.
Same!
SVRT19674 · 02/01/2021 08:52

January 6, Epiphany.

Felty · 02/01/2021 08:56

Before sunset on the 5th, when 12th night starts.

Winterwoollies · 02/01/2021 09:42

Twelfth night.

How miserable to pack everything away on Boxing Day.

Parker231 · 02/01/2021 10:25

We did ours in NYE as I like everything ready for a new year although I know many who take theirs down on Boxing Day as Christmas is over and they want a clean and tidy house.

WankPuffins · 02/01/2021 11:18

It's not miserable if it makes you happy to have everything down and clean. For me it means that the children have room to put new things and play.
GWLTM · 02/01/2021 13:39

All packed away today.

Lovely to have my living room sides back! And to be able to see out of my window (tree was in it)

Nicolastuffedone · 02/01/2021 13:40

My, very few, decorations are down today.....normally I would’ve done it yesterday, but I was busy doing other things.

kitnkaboodle · 02/01/2021 14:07

Round about now, but can't be bothered today. Still eating and drinking Christmas stuff, but it will have to all end tomorrow before school (supposedly ...) starts again. We need to change the vibe in this house back to working and schooling, so leaving decs up until the 5th/6th would not be helpful!

I agree with pps that it's sad that some people believe Christmas is over on Boxing Day. For me, it starts on Christmas Eve and lasts til about now. Anything before Christmas Eve is Advent - a quieter time of waiting and expectation before the 12 days (well, more like 9 in our house) of feasting.

littlepattilou · 02/01/2021 14:07

6th January.

BaileysAndIceForOneplease · 04/01/2021 10:32

The decorations come down in that weekend before 6th, so we have a fresh start for back to school.

Dee1975 · 04/01/2021 10:41

We did it 31 jan this year. Officially if should be 6th jan I think. But I like them down and house cleaned and tidy by the time I go back to work.

Wannabangbang · 04/01/2021 10:42

January the 2nd, tree down, everything put away and last of the Christmas food and drink consumed

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 04/01/2021 10:46

27th decs come down, I like to get organised and sort all the new presents and have a good tidy. I also like the decs before New Year’s Eve.

Nicolastuffedone · 04/01/2021 11:07

27th Dec

AndcalloffChristmas · 04/01/2021 11:09

1st Jan, but that’s because my brother’s birthday is the 2nd.

user1497207191 · 04/01/2021 11:14

New Years day is when our tree and decorations come down, the house is cleaned/tidied and we're ready to go for the New Year.

SpiderGwen · 04/01/2021 11:16

Used to be 27th as we have a family birthday on the 28th and would decorate for that.

Now Christmas decorations are “part of my birthday anyway” apparently, so we pack everything away as soon after NY as we can rustle up the energy

alittleprivacy · 04/01/2021 11:28

I take mine down some time between the 5th and the 7th of January. They have to stay up until the morning of Twelfthnight as our elves come back to life and leave us a special breakfast and a small surprise gift for DS. Depending on how the school year is working out, we'll have a small family party that night if there is no school, with a king cake and some board games. We weren't going to do it this year as school was to be back on the 6th but we will now as it's shut again. If school is still shut on the 6th, I do a small Little Christmas thing too in the morning. Then pack stuff away on the 7th.

So this year, with schools (in Ireland) shut until at least the 11th, I'll be packing things away on the 7th. Tbh, I'd have like them packed away earlier this year. Normally we do Christmassy things all through the 12 days of Christmas. Ice-skating/pantomime/winter carnival/extended family parties and visits/large outdoor sports events with friends/cinema trips/etc. So we're in full Christmas mode for the whole holiday. This year we've had none of that and just massive stress about how to manage what we were allowed versus what was safe as we were still being allowed to do things that clearly weren't safe.

I'm really looking forward to getting the decorations down, as I can move furniture around again in a way that creates a large play and exercise space in the livingroom like I did in October/November. I have a fairly large livingroom but in December it's like a cosy grotto cave with decorations everywhere. That's lovely when we're out a lot and have this nice festive spot to relax in when we're back. But when it's the place we spend most of our waking hours, I like it to feel wide open and have lots of room to move about.

dancingthroughthedark · 04/01/2021 11:44

I have started to put away the ornaments but the tree will stay until 12th night though from the look of it this year I am the only one on the street who still has theirs. I will leave lots of fairy lights up and candles out though to brighten the place up. I have found it a little sad that lots of people put them up early to cheer everyone up but then seemed in a desperate hurry to pack them away straight after Christmas.

FraughtwithGin · 04/01/2021 12:25

I don't think it ever began this year as there were none of the usual run up to Christmas activities. Where I live we have been shut down again since December 16th (until at least 10th January) following a "lockdown light" beforehand from 2nd November.
So, no Christmas markets, no Christmas meal with former colleagues, only shops open were for food or other necessities, nowhere to go.
The situation is being reviewed tomorrow, but I cannot see there being a relaxation of the current status as reported cases have been rising. This definitely means no hair appointment next week, although there is a slight glimmer of hope as one of the hotels I stay in, when working, is offering various deals from tomorrow, but this may be wishful thinking.
I did get slightly nostalgic for years gone by, when Christmas began on December 24th and went through to January 6th.

Lovely1a2b3c · 04/01/2021 13:02

I think people tend to fall into either the 'Up sometime between 30th Nov and 5th December; down sometime between Boxing Day and 1st January' club or the 'Up after 5th Dec and down on 5th/6th January' club.

Lovely1a2b3c · 04/01/2021 13:04

Ours goes down on 6th January but last year we kept it up a bit longer.

Lovely1a2b3c · 04/01/2021 13:09

@FestiveFruitloop

Technically 6th Jan, but I'm usually still not ready to part with the decs then. I suffer from depression/SAD and the lights seem to help a lot, as does the general festivity of Christmas.

The cut tree in our conservatory will stay until it's dropping too many needles, and so far it's holding up fine. Seriously considering leaving the artificial tree in our living room up till Candlemas.

Yeah I'm the same. Would quite like it up until Candlemas.
MisterT373 · 04/01/2021 13:22

In Poland the decorations stay up until Candlemas . I remember going to Krakow in Mid January and my Christmas spirit was rekindled when I saw trees with lights and decorations still up at the airport.

Trees can come down but surely this of all years we could leave the lights up. God knows we need something to brighten things up.
