To decide my husband and his sister are nuts?

SIL phones today (before BJ announcement) and says how nice it would be to go away as a family once Covid is under control.
My husband agrees with her and then they proceed to discuss going away in April next year. My SIL says she'll look for some deals online.
When my husband tells me this I said they're mad. I'd love to think everything will be normal by April but isn't it unrealistic? I told him he'd better make sure if she books something we're guaranteed a refund if we can't go. He got moody saying I'm being miserable for not wanting to go on holiday and that with the new vaccine of course things will be normal.
I text my SIL (as my husband obviously wasn't going to) saying lovely idea but make sure we can get a refund just incase. She hasn't replied two hours later so she's probably on a mood too.
Surely it's really unreasonable to plan anything for 2021 yet?
YABU it's fine to plan a holiday
YANBU don't plan anything yet

Do you really believe that that nurse had been covered by the vaccine seeing as not many (if any) have had the 2nd dose yet? Your not covered until a couple weeks after the 2nd vaccine, the vaccine isn't 100%. The vaccine also does not contain the virus 🙄. Why do people believe everything they read online?

ellyeth · 01/01/2021 19:09

I've been thinking about May. As long as it is possible to get a refund or use whatever has been paid to go towards a holiday at a later date, I can't see what the problem is.

Ihatefish · 01/01/2021 19:13

I understand they’re looking at very late this year to get to under 50s, assuming that the immunity from the first vaccines lasts more than a year and remains effective against further mutations (if not the initial at rust groups will need to restart) hence they haven’t released details of when under 50swill be vaccinated-there’s quite a strong potential they won’t be unless clinically at risk.

Knickerthief1 · 01/01/2021 19:48

I would pencil in a date and look for something last minute. We did this in October and managed to get away to Cyprus for a week. If I get the chance to do the same (within rules) in February or March I'll be off!

Ddot · 01/01/2021 20:08

Rookiemere
So what about tourists, if we get on top of it then someone brings it back in. You can't do half a job because we don't know how long we stay immune. We need to wipe it out. We will always have sick and vulnerable people. One day your well the next your not (past experience)

Chloe1973 · 01/01/2021 20:12

Unfortunately I really do not believe that we will be back to normal by April so YANBU x

AnTeallach · 01/01/2021 20:20

With GB facing new EU travel rules, remember that most of the EU countries are only allowing essential travel for people from third countries (which we now are). That doesn't include holidays! Who knows when that will change.
My daughter was due to go to Sweden next week to study for 5 months as part of the last ever Erasmus programme. That's been delayed by 2 weeks and may be for longer. Sweden's not even allowing business travellers from the UK at the moment, due to the new strain of Covid.
Nice to have something to look forward to, but a bit premature booking anything atm without full insirance cover.

PurpleTrilby · 01/01/2021 20:28

@September 15, are you spreading bullshit about the vaccine actually infecting people with covid? Because some infections after vaccination are possible. What is NOT possible is for the vaccine to infect people. If you want to split hairs about polio vaccination history, then address that, but do us all a favour and don't conflate the two things. This is not the time to throw more petrol on the fire of disinformation. Thanks in advance.

browneyes77 · 01/01/2021 20:49

I can understand wanting to have something to look forward to, but I think it's a bit premature to book anything yet. Especially given that another third of the UK has just moved up into Tier 4 and we have no real idea when this may be reduced.

Me and my DP managed to get away for a quick 4 days (UK) in September for my birthday and we're glad we did as we just can't see any chance of being able to go away this side of next summer.

Much as we'd love to plan a holiday, we'd rather wait and see what happens and then quickly book something if a window of opportunity comes up and it's feasible and relatively safe (again UK - we usually go to Wales, but they sound like they're in a bad way themselves currently, so don't think they'll be accessible any time soon unfortunately and I'm sure they wouldn't want people coming there until they have control of it themselves!).

We've already written off being able to go abroad next year and to be honest, I don't think either of us would feel comfortable travelling abroad until this whole situation is brought under better control.
At least holidaying in this country we are confined to the car on a journey that's only a couple of hours and then to a self catering caravan and have access to a lovely beach and beautiful Welsh mountains, so we can maintain any social distancing (or even more so) as we would here Smile

Whoopsmahoot · 01/01/2021 21:07

Forget it. Things will be slower due to the shortage of vials and rubber stoppers for the vaccine. April is way too soon. If your 80, then you’ll b ok. 🥴

Darbs76 · 01/01/2021 21:09

We booked flights to Florida for August, as it was a great price. But we made sure we could change it or get a refund before we booked. I wouldn’t be banking on going anywhere in April. What’s the rush to book now, can’t they wait?

Lamaitresse · 01/01/2021 21:14

We have had to delay travel plans for the third time from the summer, and the only date we can do before the ticket expires is April. We are under no illusion that we will be able to go, am expecting to lose the money but we had to at least try...

Br1256 · 01/01/2021 21:43

Just a word of warning ...my daughter had an apartment booked through airbandb in Mexico last year for her and her family around £2000, they haven’t managed to get a penny back and have even been charged for cleaning of an apartment they didn’t even go to....

MrsExpo · 01/01/2021 21:53

We have a cottage booked for the last week in April (Devon) and are guardedly hopeful we'll be able to go. It was booked in August last year. There is a Covid "refund" clause on the booking terms, which states we will get our money back if we can't go, but we're not going to cancel.

Not sure I'd book foreign travel for then, though.

Gilld69 · 01/01/2021 22:14

ive booked for dec ive taken out covid cover ins just incase

Malibu295 · 01/01/2021 22:17

YANBU.
We have a wedding to go to abroad in April which has already been rescheduled once and sadly doesn't seem likely that will go ahead! Talking about holidays is nice and keeps us all going but actually booking it is totally different in the current situation x

user1472231578 · 01/01/2021 23:06

Dont plan anything. Thats crazy. Thats 4 months away. Numbers are at an all time high

Neilyweily · 02/01/2021 01:04

Absolutely amazed at the first response!

"My husband did the math"

And it must equate to 4 years b cos your husband did the math (and yes the crap text was deliberate)

I'm sorry but you shouldn't be allowed near other humans never mind allowing you access to the internet.

Do your own maths (yes there is an s after math)

Don't rely on your husband to do it for you.

Then you might just realise that he is an idiot.

Leontine · 02/01/2021 02:49

^ wow, how rude. Shock

mrbreezeet1 · 02/01/2021 03:43

You are not being unreasonable at all my dear your family is being unreasonable we do not know what will be the future.

mrbreezeet1 · 02/01/2021 03:46

That's a real shame as you were so looking toward it

alliwantforchristmasis · 02/01/2021 16:23

I'm looking at holidays but for 2022 as I will be 50 in 2022 so I am willing to have to do whatever it takes to go away then but if we can't then we will look for something else to do. Always look for holidays with free cancellation just incase. You are not being unreasonable let them look but like you have already said make it easy to cancel.

Thewarrenerswife · 02/01/2021 21:33

It’s not just cancellation you need to consider. It may have already been said, but if flights travel is allowed, but there’s quarantine in place, can you all take an extra two weeks off when you return to the U.K.? Can your children have an extra 2 weeks off school? No, I wouldn’t be booking anything yet.

SaltyTootsieToes · 03/01/2021 09:38

@September15 please don’t try to use USA news or websites to advise the rest of the world about anything. Most, not all, USA news sources have an agenda and that agenda is not telling accurate news. We, rest of the world, don’t believe at least 75% of the crap news coming out of USA. I say this as am American living abroad. Completely despair about misinformation being spread in USA.

kittiecat16 · 03/01/2021 15:31

YANBU. I can understand the desire to want to look at holidays and hope for some normality but I can’t see things being back to normal as early as April. Don’t think it’s unreasonable to as her to check that you’ll get a refund if it falls through
