To decide my husband and his sister are nuts?

SIL phones today (before BJ announcement) and says how nice it would be to go away as a family once Covid is under control.
My husband agrees with her and then they proceed to discuss going away in April next year. My SIL says she'll look for some deals online.
When my husband tells me this I said they're mad. I'd love to think everything will be normal by April but isn't it unrealistic? I told him he'd better make sure if she books something we're guaranteed a refund if we can't go. He got moody saying I'm being miserable for not wanting to go on holiday and that with the new vaccine of course things will be normal.
I text my SIL (as my husband obviously wasn't going to) saying lovely idea but make sure we can get a refund just incase. She hasn't replied two hours later so she's probably on a mood too.
Surely it's really unreasonable to plan anything for 2021 yet?
YABU it's fine to plan a holiday
YANBU don't plan anything yet

Will not be booking anything non refundable until late 2022. Not even UK stays. You can't plan ahead at the moment.

TurquoiseDragon · 31/12/2020 02:04

I'm not booking anything for next year yet. I'm going to wait and see how the vaccine roll out goes first. I'll get my passport renewed so we can grab a last minute bargain, should circumstances allow.

Guylan · 31/12/2020 02:38

Independent Sage yesterday said it will take at least to June to vaccinate ages 65 and over, clinically vulnerable and health workers and end of next year to reach herd immunity.

People on Facey B going on about 'only a month of this left'.

Janonomouse · 31/12/2020 02:57

Your husband is batshit.

StopSquirtingBleachOnCaneToads · 31/12/2020 03:37

I don't see what their issue is with your suggestion. You haven't said don't book a holiday, you've just said to book something refundable. April is VERY soon and things are unlikely to be much better than they are now, so book something refundable, just in case. They get to book their holiday, you get the peace of mind that the refund offers you.

Sounds like a complete non issue to me.

lovelemoncurd · 31/12/2020 03:40

In August time we booked a holiday for April thinking it was all going to be fine. I've realised it won't be now. Just hoping we can get a refund!

They are being overly optimistic. Summer may be a better time.

SIL phones today (before BJ announcement)

Wow, talk about TMI, can she not just crack on without announcing it Wink

YANBU OP.

BoomBoomsCousin · 31/12/2020 05:21

I don't think there's anything wrong with planning and day dreaming a bit about a holiday once covid is over/under control enough. But Spril is very unrealistic and it would be absolutely stupid to book something non-refundable for then.

BoomBoomsCousin · 31/12/2020 05:22

*April!

TillyTopper · 31/12/2020 06:06

It's nice to dream of a holiday but no way would I be booking anything - I think the roll out will be slow. Vaccination doesn't guarantee you'll be let into other countries without quarantine (there is no standard recognised "passport" for "this person has been vaccinated"). Personally, I have put all thoughts of holidays aside as why risk losing money.

Shoxfordian · 31/12/2020 06:08

Depends where you book really, I’ve booked a cottage and a restaurant for the end of May for dh 40th in the UK so theoretically that should be alright

CuntyMcBollocks · 31/12/2020 06:15

I've had a similar conversation with my dh. I don't think things will be anywhere near back to normal for at least another year, and definitely not by April. We would love to go on holiday too, but I can't see any point in even trying to book one yet as the future is still uncertain.

actiongirl1978 · 31/12/2020 06:18

You're not being unreasonable, but my parents have rebooked their April holiday from 2020 for 2021.

My mum is livid that she has had to put her life on hold for a year and fully intends to go away on her holiday. I really hope she isn't still in tier 4 then Sad

Neenan · 31/12/2020 06:20

According to the omnicalculator I won’t be getting my vaccination until July at age 54 with DS at 27 getting his in September.

Anthony Faucci doesn’t expect life to get back to normal until the end of 21.

So no, I’m not booking anything right now.

OverTheRainbow88 · 31/12/2020 06:23

We’ve managed two 1 week holidays between lockdowns and being tier 2. Not mad but has to be lucky with the timings

DrManhattan · 31/12/2020 06:24

Next year is not gonna be anything better than this one. Its not even known if the vaccine even stops the spread.

OverTheRainbow88 · 31/12/2020 06:53

@DrManhattan

The spread doesn’t matter once all vaccinated

Bakeachocolatecake2day · 31/12/2020 06:59

There is a vaccine calculator online - I'm late 40's and its saying vaccine in September.

pilates · 31/12/2020 07:00

You are not unreasonable just realistic.

OverTheRainbow88 · 31/12/2020 07:01

@Bakeachocolatecake2day

That’s probably not been updated since the Oxford vaccine was approved.

CardoMondo · 31/12/2020 07:02

We’ve booked one night in a castle in May (UK) for our anniversary. Even then I checked that they would offer “COVID refunds” just in case.

DH wants to book USA for September. I don’t think it will happen.

TanglinOrchards · 31/12/2020 07:02

@ExtraOnions

TBH I’m looking at, and talking about holidays ... it’s helping to lift my mood. Maybe it’s a fantasy, but it like window shopping
