To think we should bring back the clapping

We seem to be in a similar position to March and the NHS is coming under serious strain. Aibu to think now is the time to bring back the clapping?

Nope. Was pointless then and is pointless now. Virtue signalling nonsense.

Why is it “virtue signaling” and not a show of support and how do you differentiate?

@BurtleTurtle

No, clapping achieves no meaningful change. You can't eat applause. Give them a well-deserved pay rise instead.
Unfortunately the money isn’t there to do that I don’t know why people don’t/can’t understand that

No. Better to show your support by sticking to the rules.

Nanny0gg · 31/12/2020 00:26

No clapping, no bell ringing, no cheering, no nothing from my doorstep.

Didn't do it the first time, wouldn't think of it in the future.

Much happier to help with practical stuff.

@NYEPOPPER1 'think you should evaluate your attitude and outlook on life'

I think you are hilarious.

Thanks it was a serious point though you sound bitter

No it sets my dogs off barking

Sunbird24 · 31/12/2020 00:28

Virtue signalling is all about making sure people see you doing something supposedly ‘good’ rather than focussing on the real impact of what you’re doing. Sometimes accompanied by berating other people because you haven’t seen them doing the thing, usually without bothering to find out their circumstances.

FrankiesKnuckle · 31/12/2020 00:29

Instead of clapping why not just put your energies into staying the fuck at home.

You know what would be a really good morale boost? Not being late home from every shift would be a start.
And I don't mean a bit late, I'm talking 3-4 hours late off a relentlessly demoralising 12 hour shift of attending hours old calls, irate patients and families, sitting outside an ED with a rapidly declining patient with no fucking bed to put them in.

Never in over 20 years as a paramedic have I experienced what we are going through right now. I'd go as far to say that this second wave is worse than the first.
I have never had to wait outside an ED for hours after blueing a patient in....

It's inconceivable.

Yes I've had lengthy hand overs over the years but blue lighting a patient in is usually a given that you get in regardless. Well not any more.

So to summarise, no clapping. Just no. And again, no.

I’m sure that was some people’s intentions but the vast majority I believe did genuinely want to show support

MeowPurrGrr · 31/12/2020 00:30

An NHS nurse

SaltyAF · 31/12/2020 00:30

Please don't pretend that anyone gives a shit about anybody else.

You don’t come across like that at all labelling vast parts of the country “thickos” and “performing seals” comes across as extremely bitter and plain nasty

Hell to the flipping no. I can't say a clap ever made me feel supported. I'd also like to not bring back the terms key worker or front line worker. Decent wages and adequate PPE. You can keep your pots and pans and neighbourly one up man ship for who can make the most bloody noise.

LittleBearPad · 31/12/2020 00:32

Of course the money’s there if the government chooses for it to be.

Was it £100 million Chris Grayling spent on non-existent ferries...
£22 billion on a pretty ropey test and trace system.
How much was spent on PPE that didn’t meet standards.

viques · 31/12/2020 00:32

Maybe the clapping helped raise moral for a few weeks, but it became increasingly ridiculous and awkward (especially when the Cambridge’s seized the opportunity of a photo and joined in.) Plus it’s winter now, and dark , the virtue signallers will have to bring out spotlights so they can be seen.

QuestionableMouse · 31/12/2020 00:32

Oh god please no.

Do you think the health care workers really care if people stand and clap? I'm sure they'd rather have proper funding, the vaccine and more help.

YardleyX · 31/12/2020 00:32

Waaaah!!

Please not the clapping! Please!!

Tryingtoslim · 31/12/2020 00:32

Instead of clapping people should (although I don’t know how) be looking at how to rally support for workers. Someone I know very well is a senior icu nurse and has some time off, would usually be working extra in that time. However has rejected the constant pleas as they have had their sleep breaks removed. Workers don’t want clapping they want support in other ways

Fuckoffyoueviltrolls · 31/12/2020 00:33

Just NO, sorry- but it makes me cringe

YouLikeTheBadOnesToo · 31/12/2020 00:33

@NYEPOPPER1 I think for me it felt like virtue signalling the second week, when a neighbour commented that they’d ‘noticed’ dh & i had ‘skipped the clap’. DH was comforting our terrified child (noise woke and frightened him every week), and I was having a hot shower, because I’d been spat on earlier that day at work (prison officer). Clapping was the last thing on either of our minds

It wasn’t about showing appreciation for our neighbour, it was about feeling superior to those who weren’t on their doorsteps.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 31/12/2020 00:33

I misread this as "bring back the clap". Grin
