To think we should bring back the clapping

We seem to be in a similar position to March and the NHS is coming under serious strain. Aibu to think now is the time to bring back the clapping?

OP posts:
Thewithesarehere · 01/01/2021 01:29

I have to work from today though it was supposed to be my holiday. Some wanker decided to break rules and get as much exposed to as many people as possible over Christmas. Now they have Covid and I have no childcare. This blatant disregard of the whole situation shows the lack of respect we have for NHS. Might as well tank the whole institution rather than thanking them!

MinervaSaidThar · 01/01/2021 01:29

But the country just won’t be able to afford that it doesn’t mean we aren’t grateful but if the money isn’t there it isn’t thete

You're clearly on a wind-up, OP. And if you're not, you"ve demonstrated why I never joined in the self-serving clapping.

Franticbutterfly · 01/01/2021 01:30

Leave the clapping, l'd take a pay rise though.

soopedup · 01/01/2021 01:37

I am NOT fucking clapping. It’s the shortest suggestion anyone ever came up with ever. We all look like idiots standing like sealions flapping away on our doorsteps. I’d rather stick £10 in a pot to treat the doctors to a pint. Leave me and my hands alone FFS

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/01/2021 09:16

No.

Grilledaubergines · 01/01/2021 09:32

Absolutely not, it was a ridiculous gesture then and it would be now. Clapping like fucking seals on the door steps, I ask you, bloody ridiculous!

TempsPerdu · 01/01/2021 09:38

Another firm No Thanks here. The clapping was only ever performative and all my friends in the NHS hated it. We never did it first time round (fortunately the rest of our road seemed to agree as I couldn’t be doing with all the judging and curtain twitching I’ve read about on here).

I’d rather pay more tax to actually fund the damn thing properly.

Oooohbehave · 01/01/2021 10:03

Hell no! I'm sure NHS staff would much prefer a payrise.

crankysaurus · 01/01/2021 10:08

I think they'd probably rather we just all stay apart for a wee bit longer and don't overload hospitals.

Chimeraforce · 02/01/2021 19:44

Of course the money can be found. What about the millions we aren't paying to be a member of the E. U?

supersonicginandtonic · 02/01/2021 19:45

I work for the NHS and found it embarrassing.

Reedwarbler · 02/01/2021 20:14

Clapping was ridiculous. Thank god no one felt the need to do it here. The NHS needs money, not performing seals. And I agree that it is virtue signalling. People salved their consciences by standing on their doorsteps showing their 'support'.
If you want to stand out on your doorstep in the bitter cold, dark and wet, be my guest op. I am sure it will help solve the horrendous problems in the NHS.

KarmaNoMore · 02/01/2021 20:18

Honestly, I wouldn’t have my moral raised by clapping when everybody is bending the rules. If you want to show appreciation to the NHS stay as home as much as you can and stop meeting people.

AaahWoof · 02/01/2021 20:21

Yeah and then let's bring back the "ooooh I'm having words with number 36 as she wasn't out last week and we need to put up a good show"

Then let's bring back the "post clap neighbourhood having a drink in next door's garden" parties... the social media shaming if you didn't join in and your street let the side down.

Then we can lay into the shift keyworkers who are woken up, or have children woken up by it all - especially as the clap willy waving contest escalates into blaring car horns for 10 minutes outside someone's window (especially appreciated when your clock was wrong and you fired it 10 minutes early so did it twice you fuckwit over the road)... and then we'll break out the fireworks again - and the local social media bickering over fireworks can resume.

And then as the clapping as a medium of self-validation continues we can have the shite like the "lockdown discos" back and those who decided to bring out fucking PA systems to perform open air concerts during the NHS clap to make the whole thing even more unifying for anyone.

I dreaded it - dreaded the kids being upset by the car horns, the post-clapping drinks gathering where I could hear every word of the non-clappers being slagged off by people who either weren't following any rules or simply couldn't count... I absolutely dreaded it and how toxic it became.

Oh God no - we didn't do it the first time and wouldn't do it again, What was the actual point of it, what did it actually do. Were NHS staff thinking "Oh look at all those lovely people out on their doorsteps showing their support for us" or did they think (as my NHS worker daughter did) "What a load of saddos banging pot lids as if it makes any difference to my work situation

Each to their own and all that.......

AlCalavicci · 02/01/2021 20:22

All them that think it would boost moral , instead go to a hospital where the staff have to pay for the parking and at 8pm pay for the next member of staffs parking for there shift . I think that would boost moral much more

Peregrina · 02/01/2021 20:30

What about the millions we aren't paying to be a member of the E. U?

Yes, that £350 million a week would do very nicely. What's stopping them now? Last year they were able to find money for Dido Harding's failed track and trace system, so the money is there if the political will is.

littlepattilou · 02/01/2021 20:31

@NYEPOPPER1 Definitely not.

ChristmasFluff · 02/01/2021 20:32

No

Spend the time you save in writing to your MP and Boris insisting on a pay rise for NHS staff. I'm sure they'll appreciate that more

Bella43 · 02/01/2021 21:15

No. Please no. I appreciate all that key workers are doing but please no more clapping. It's not helping the fight bringing everyone outdoors and mingling which sometimes happens. Especially when children see their friends.

BeenThereDone · 02/01/2021 21:43

Those on the front line just need people to cop on and start listening and follow the guidelines. We are getting to a worse situation then we were in March/April and we are exhausted. Mentally and physically.
Virtue signalling means nothing

Elephant4 · 02/01/2021 21:50

No. Clapping for the NHS was a load of bullshit, distracting us from the fact it’s underfunded and about to collapse.

TheNinny · 02/01/2021 21:54

Im NHS. Please fuck off with the clapping 😁

Lovely1a2b3c · 02/01/2021 21:55

Introduce an NHS tax for multimillionaires- job done!

Or this, this would do too.
