To think we should bring back the clapping

We seem to be in a similar position to March and the NHS is coming under serious strain. Aibu to think now is the time to bring back the clapping?

The clapping was a lovely distraction so we didn't notice the government's incompetence.

That moment has well and truly past!

ShrikeAttack · 31/12/2020 00:14

@NYEPOPPER1

'Why are people so down on the clapping?'

Because it's something that thickos do.

I think you know that.

I’m sorry but you are sounding like a revolting snob

On a practical level, clapping outside on a warm, light Summer evening is one thing, a cold, dark January is quite different.

StopOvaryActing · 31/12/2020 00:15

@NYEPOPPER1

But surely anything that would raise staff morale and bring a better sense of community would be a good thing
I'll be honest.

Please, no.

I work in the NHS and the clapping was really bloody tedious and tbh it was just not REAL action. It was nice for the first week or two, but then seeing Mr Johnson and his goddamn cronies coming out to clap at us, whilst doing LITERALLY NOTHING ELSE to help us... It felt like a really patronising pat on the head type gesture, not a genuine one.

And after a while it started to feel really ridiculous. Everyone coming outside to clap at us, meanwhile, we were 8 weeks into lockdown and people weren't following guidance anymore. I'd have much rather seen people acting to protect the NHS instead of just clapping and thinking they've done something good enough and then going back inside at 8:02pm and forgetting about keyworkers 'til the following Thursday.

What would raise staff morale is a damn pay rise. Which has been purposefully, without two shits given "unfortunately delayed", in Hancock's words.

That's just my opinion anyway... But I have a lot of colleagues who felt similarly.

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

Oh for the love of god, please no
😂😂
YouLikeTheBadOnesToo · 31/12/2020 00:16

Please no. It woke my son and made him cry every single week. Selfishly, the last thing I need after a 13 hour shift is to spend upwards of an hour comforting him, cos my neighbour felt the need to perform increasingly elaborate drum solos on her saucepans.

Fallsballs · 31/12/2020 00:19

OP 99% of people think clapping is not a good idea - you got the message yet ?

Bekilted · 31/12/2020 00:19

It was awful. Didn't do it the first time and nothing has changed.
Yes, there's no money for front line pay rises but the fat cats at the top don't seem to care.

Boris' phantom £350m might have been useful Hmm

ShrikeAttack · 31/12/2020 00:19

@NYEPOPPER1 'I’m sorry but you are sounding like a revolting snob'

Rather a revolting snob than a performing seal.

Crafting1Queen · 31/12/2020 00:19

ODFOD

U2HasTheEdge · 31/12/2020 00:19

Fuck no, and it does not boost staff morale for the majority of NHS workers.

I work for the NHS, in mental health. Whilst we don't work with people who knowingly have covid (but still at risk with visits and the amount of people we are in close contact with etc) our work load has doubled and we will be under more strain than ever for a very long time to come.
If anything would boost morale, it would be more money put into the NHS to help run services more effectively .

The clapping does nothing, and it is patronising.

StopOvaryActing · 31/12/2020 00:19

"It was started by an individual"

Yes, it was. But it was continued by the government, as a smokescreen for their sheer incompetence.

Tbf last time mumsnet was vigorously against it but the general population was very supportive

If you are in Tier 4 i don't think you are allowed out to clap

You are sounding extremely mean spirited and nasty. I don’t mean that to be insulting but I think you should evaluate your attitude and outlook on life.

LittleBearPad · 31/12/2020 00:21

The government can give a pay rise if it wishes to. It would be of more use than pointless clapping or the ever larger NHS pin Matt Hancock parades around.

If you want to do something send a card to your local hospital thanking the people there. Apparently those are really helping with morale.

Fallsballs · 31/12/2020 00:21

Yes, but you’ve got your answer so ?

Wheresmykimchi · 31/12/2020 00:21

No.

The NHS have done amazing, but other industries also on their knees have been criminally underlooked.

Ironfloor269 · 31/12/2020 00:22

No. Just no.

Wow.

And people who use the word "thickos" are?

Givemeabreak88 · 31/12/2020 00:22

I hope this is a joke.

This reminds me that on my local Facebook they suggested we do a Christmas bell ring to help Santa fly his sleigh 😂 there was a post the next day from angry people because they were the only one on their roads doing it and no one “joined in” 😂

Competitive clapping.

SarahAndQuack · 31/12/2020 00:23

No, I'd rather not.

I know a lot of people working in the NHS and most of them would rather decent funding for the NHS, and decent pay for themselves, than an empty gesture.

One of the few people I know who thoroughly enjoyed the clapping was my SIL, who has cheerfully ignored all covid rules and has gone from working on a covid ICU to meeting up with her very vulnerable parents (in Tier 4), while sniggering at us for worrying. I don't feel the least inclined to clap for her.
