To think we should bring back the clapping

We seem to be in a similar position to March and the NHS is coming under serious strain. Aibu to think now is the time to bring back the clapping?

@NYEPOPPER1 'You don’t come across like that at all labelling vast parts of the country “thickos” and “performing seals” comes across as extremely bitter and plain nasty'

Cool.

Carry on clapping.

Indecisive12 · 31/12/2020 00:34

NHS worker and no thanks. How about thinking of us when you vote next and how we haven’t had a pay rise that matches inflation in forever. Clapping was awful

Neveranynamesleft · 31/12/2020 00:34

Is this another Daily Fail wind up ?
Clap off ffs

NYEPOPPER1 · 31/12/2020 00:34
@NYEPOPPER1 I think for me it felt like virtue signalling the second week, when a neighbour commented that they’d ‘noticed’ dh & i had ‘skipped the clap’. DH was comforting our terrified child (noise woke and frightened him every week), and I was having a hot shower, because I’d been spat on earlier that day at work (prison officer). Clapping was the last thing on either of our minds

It wasn’t about showing appreciation for our neighbour, it was about feeling superior to those who weren’t on their doorsteps.
Of course that was wrong but I don’t think it’s worth writing off all clapping because of that

@WhatTiggersDoBest

I misread this as "bring back the clap". Grin
Yes DH assumed that was meant when I read out the title. It seems about as popular
NYEPOPPER1 · 31/12/2020 00:35

I am pleased the amount of support has now doubled

Destinysdaughter · 31/12/2020 00:35

Hard nope from me. Pointless and a kick in the teeth to the hard working staff.

But I have NEVER seen a 99% YABU before, so well done for that OP!

How was it a kick in the teeth I’m sorry you felt that way it was supposed to be supportive

@Ginkpin

Dear God No. The first night felt good - like a genuine thank you. Every single night thereafter was a combination of virtue signalling and neighbours 'checking' and judging. I was so relieved when it stopped.
This. It felt like the government were trying to distract us at the same time as saying they were world leading/had enough PPE.
viques · 31/12/2020 00:38

@LittleBearPad

Of course the money’s there if the government chooses for it to be.

Was it £100 million Chris Grayling spent on non-existent ferries...
£22 billion on a pretty ropey test and trace system.
How much was spent on PPE that didn’t meet standards.

StillMedusa · 31/12/2020 00:38

Nope nope NOPE!
Virtue signalling at best.. my DD1 is a doctor who worked all through the first lockdown on covid wards, DD2 is nurse.. and the last thing they wanted to hear as they staggered home was people out banging bloody saucepans.
As DD1 put it... 'clapping doesn't pay for my shopping or make me less likely to die!'

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 31/12/2020 00:38

Having worked for the NHS before and knowing how uncomfortable it made some staff I really don’t think so.

It was mostly a smokescreen to get peoples attention diverted so the Gov didn’t have to give more funds or appropriate protection wear anyway!

ShrikeAttack · 31/12/2020 00:38

@NYEPOPPER1 'am pleased the amount of support has now doubled'.

From 1% to 2%?

Amazing.

How about staying in your house and stop being dicks.

That would help your the NHS a lot more than clapping when some of the NHS staff are trying to fecking sleep

ShopTattsyrup · 31/12/2020 00:42

As a nurse, no - please for the love of god no! Virtue Signalling from my neighbours not following the rules, and really fucking awkward the couple of times I came home from work at the wrong moment and had to sheepishly walk into the house to a round of applause Grin.

I will say - the first one felt lovely and genuine, every subsequent one less and less so.

Wheresmykimchi · 31/12/2020 00:42

Just to be clear, its your use of the word "thickos" i object to , Shrike.

Mulhollandmagoo · 31/12/2020 00:42

@NYEPOPPER1

But surely anything that would raise staff morale and bring a better sense of community would be a good thing
I think they'd prefer a payrise Wink
Dogsaresomucheasier · 31/12/2020 00:43

Clapping with MPs who voted against nurses pay rises? No. You want to support the NHS vote with an iota of community spirit and responsibility at the next available opportunity!
