We seem to be in a similar position to March and the NHS is coming under serious strain. Aibu to think now is the time to bring back the clapping?

I do not want to be clapped by the thousands of people who crowded the beaches all summer, thronged all of the shopping centres before christmas, had illeal gatherings and basically did whatever the fuck they wanted all year, it's their fault I'm totally knackered working 12 hour days 6 days a week because all my colleagues are off with covid.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 31/12/2020 09:15

No money OP? It depends what you consider more important I suppose, the NHS or this.......

Couldn't say it better myself. So fucked off . 2 weeks qualified and I'm already covering isolating/shielding/covid positive staff.
RosesAndHellebores · 31/12/2020 09:18

@madcatladyforever I have been working very similar hours to you to try to keep my organisation afloat and still 90 people have been made redundant. Also have stuck to the rules. Additionally have taken a significant pay cut.

MistletoeandGin · 31/12/2020 09:21

Yeah, DH has been working 12 hour days, hasn’t had a days annual leave since Feb and has had to take a 20% pay cut. Private sector.

Tinabn · 31/12/2020 09:22

If you have stuck to the rules totally, if you have written to your Conservative MP demanding answers about the waste of money through giving contracts to those not capable of delivering the desired outcome, the non- sacking of Cummings, the total mismanagement of the crisis leading to the horrific death rate when we were one of the last European countries to be infected and could have learned lessons from those dealing with it a month before AND have written again when you’ve been sent the copy and paste response sent by Cummings office, if you are determined to remember all of this and the lies pedalled to the populace with regards to the ease and result of Brexit, THEN clap. But most of the people who look beyond the surface now see it as shallow ‘bread and circuses’ encouraged by an incompetent government to detract from what is happening. Respect those working on the front line by electing a government based on competency not sound bites, and that includes party members when it comes to voting for party leaders.

MargeWhereDidMyFingersLand · 31/12/2020 09:22

Ahh yes, the clapping that got me abuse for not joining in. My DH was asleep for his night shift and obviously me clapping under our bedroom window was just what he needed. As it was he got woken up by saucepans, fireworks and car horns, but no need to get a decent rest before driving lorries eh? Night workers don't need sleep. Hmm

IamMaz · 31/12/2020 09:22

No way!
What's more, it's bloody freezing to be standing around outside now!!!

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 31/12/2020 09:24

No to the clap.

2BDIs · 31/12/2020 09:24

The amount of NHS staff in my circle (friends/acquaintances) made up of nurses, physios, drs etc who do as they please and don't follow the rules leaves to be belive they either don't care about those around them or they know this is all being blown out of proportion and the restriction are unjustified.
No I won't bloody clap for them

annevonkleve · 31/12/2020 09:32

Definitely no to clapping. It was a stupid idea first time around and it is stupid now.

The best thing you can do to show your appreciation for the NHS is pay your taxes if earning and follow the covid rules.

Clapping does nothing and is merely virtue signalling for the sake of the neighbours.

Twobrews · 31/12/2020 09:32

Before Christmas we declined an invitation to an 'outdoor' birthday party of over 30 people which was in fact in an inflatable disco dome, was mostly NHS staff.
The same couple have held 'Sunday Funday' in their home bar most weeks and allow their teens to have friends over daily.

megletthesecond · 31/12/2020 09:36

No. I never clapped anyway.

I'd rather we properly funded the NHS and health conditions that increase pressure on it (addictions, inactivity, mental health) were given support in their early days to prevent the problem snowballing.

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 31/12/2020 09:37

The doctors and nurses I know say the clapping was a nice gesture but what they really wanted was for us to stay home, stick to the rules and stop making their jobs even harder and more dangerous.

Bunnybigears · 31/12/2020 09:39

God no! It was all invented to appease the masses in the first place.

TrafficKone · 31/12/2020 09:41

Good god no. I have loads of respect for NHS staff but I show my appreciation at the ballot box by trying to vote for a party that will give them a fair deal. Anyone who voted Tory at the last election who clapped is a total hypocrite.

firstevernamechange · 31/12/2020 09:44

Hi OP,

Government's don't work like households. "There is simply not enough money," is a front for justifying austerity. Governments have the power to raise money and the best way to do that is by making people feel comfortable to spend money (by increasing income from tax). It is absolutely possible to increase NHS workers wages.
The reason we are in crisis now is not Karen not wearing a mask, it's the fact that even in a good year the NHS is dreadfully understaffed.
The clapping, especially combined with "There's just no money to pay you a decent wage. Soz, " just comes across as very patronising.

Incidentally, I'm not NHS staff, but I had Covid19 during the clapping. I tried very hard to distract myself from the fact I had a new and, in some cases, deadly disease cursing through (and attacking) my veins. I hated the clap. Every time it sent my anxiety through the roof.

Tearsfortiers · 31/12/2020 09:52

We do not need the clapping to restart! It was simply an opportunity for my wanker neighbours to think they were being marvellous and supportive even though they wouldn't stick to the rules. Tier 4 here and they've had visitors every single day since Christmas Eve. Angry

HereTodayHereTomorrow · 31/12/2020 09:54

God I hated the clapping. We got a shitty note through our door for missing the first few claps (we had what we think was Covid, no testing back then!) and never found out who it was from. I’ve disliked all of my neighbours since!

Normandy144 · 31/12/2020 09:57

Please no more clapping. And also while we're at it, no more novelty masks.

OfTheNight · 31/12/2020 10:01

Well OP, I think if you want to do it then no-one can stop you from standing on your own doorstep and clapping. Personally, I’m not sure of the point of it exactly.

strawberrymilkshakemonkey · 31/12/2020 10:07

definitely not.

we know obesity is a risk factor for covid yet loads of people on my street actually clapped whilst eating fatty foods. one of my neighbours actually received a kfc delivery whilst clapping. the hypocrisy.

if you want to help the NHS, stay indoors, stop mixing with others, and lose some weight. clapping won't help anyone.

roarfeckingroarr · 31/12/2020 10:09

PLEASE NO

crossstitchingnana · 31/12/2020 10:09

No. Let's not.

Angel2702 · 31/12/2020 10:10

It was fine as a one off but became meaningless doing it for weeks on end.
