AIBU? Vegan gift.

It was my birthday over the Christmas period; my friend - who is quite the "militant vegan" - has sent me some chocolates through the post which is really lovely and thoughtful of her.

However upon opening the chocolate I have found that it is vegan and gluten-free. I am neither of these things. I'm grateful for the thought but sadly this gift will go to waste as it is not something I'd eat.

I probably sound massively ungrateful but I really do appreciate the thought - the only reason I'm a bit irked by it is because I bend over backwards to only buy vegan, ethical products for my friend that I know she will use. She hasn't reciprocated this and has instead bought me something she would like, not me.

AIBU or just truthful? My DH understands why I am put out but I feel really ungrateful - if anything I'm more annoyed that this gift will go unused and my friend will have ultimately wasted her money.

Why not just try them, vegan choc is often excellent

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 30/12/2020 17:37

@Ginfordinner

Well done on taking it on the chin OP. I appear to have cross posted with a few Booja-Booja chocolate lovers.

Please try the chocolates and report back.

That's OK! I respect people's views and reading back my OP I come across as ungrateful cunt when I promise you, I'm really not.

Definitely will try the chocs - I'll cut it up into pieces and post it out to the nicer MN posters Wink Smile

It’s not necessarily a bad gift idea. I used to be vegan and have plenty of amazing gift ideas that I’m sure my friends would enjoy trying. Gluten free snacks aren’t the nicest though, that’s probably more of a downer than the vegan aspect

SoupDragon · 30/12/2020 17:37

@Mrstwiddle

I’m with you OP, I’d be annoyed too, the vegan chocolate/biscuits I’ve tried are not as nice as non vegan.
Never eaten a Lotus biscuit?
smeerf · 30/12/2020 17:37

Vegan chocolate is horrible. I understand OP, you would have preferred something that wasn't a vegan compromise - if she didn't want to buy animal products, fine, then don't buy chocolate. I say this looking at some vegan chocolates from an ethical Christmas cracker half finished on the table (loath to throw them away as I hate food waste but no one's going to eat them).

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 30/12/2020 17:38

@sadpapercourtesan

I would call her and explain that while you appreciate the thought, it's not something you will enjoy - so would she like it back, as it's clearly to her taste.
I'm very tempted to do this but I hate rocking the boat (I can take people being aggressive etc on an anonymous forum but don't like upsetting folk in real life). Haha.

I'll not vegan but I'll have them!

You don't like Hobnobs, Oreos, orange creams, fig rolls, off-brand Jaffa Cakes or bourbons?? What biscuits DO you eat? Do you go out of your way to check the ingredients on your digestives to make sure you get the ones with milk in?
Abraxan · 30/12/2020 17:38

Vegan chocolate is plain chocolate, that's all.

That wouldn't help me. I don't enjoy plain chocolate.

I would probably try it - unless I knew someone who was gluten free/vegan who might like it who I could pass it on to them - but I haven't had vegan chocolate I have liked yet.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 30/12/2020 17:39

@SoupDragon never realised Lotus biscuits were vegan! Very tasty too.

Hopefully Op the list I linked to will be helpful for you to buy your friend presents with ease, as most are found on normal supermarket shelves.

Gppd for you to take this thread on the chin

FTEngineerM · 30/12/2020 17:39

YADBVU

Are salads only for vegans too?

Hell these fries send them back THEYRE VEGAN AND IM NOT VEGAN

katy1213 · 30/12/2020 17:40

Vegan chocolate is vile (but I hate plain chocolate). I'd be tempted to buy her a nice pork pie for her birthday!

Moo678 · 30/12/2020 17:40

I bought all of my family ethical chocolate for Xmas - I’m trying really hard to be eco friendly and more ethical in the food I buy and I wanted to give them something delicious (it is soooo good) which was also ethical. Some of the bars were vegan because they were high quality dark chocolate - probably all gluten free! I hope none of them took offence - I was sharing a product which I genuinely love which also fits in with my ethics - I would think your friend was doing the same. Hope it was nice x

Ylvamoon · 30/12/2020 17:40

@PurpleDaisies - yep did try a few different brands / types. I'm all for veggie/ vegan foods!
Granted, some are more vile than others, but none of them was remotely pleasant in terms of texture and taste. (I'd rather go without!)

SoupDragon · 30/12/2020 17:41

I think Oreos are too. I think more are "accidentally vegan" than you think.

There are a lot of "think"s in there 😂😂

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 30/12/2020 17:41

@Figgyboa

YABU (and ungrateful)!
I'm really not ungrateful. I very much appreciate the thought that my friend went out of her way to get this gift posted to me. It was very fucking kind of her and I acknowledge that.

My AIBU is more that I am not a vegan; I wouldn't buy a vegan non-vegan chocs.

But reading through people's responses I've realised I've probably acted like an immature little shit and should probably just eat the damn chocolate.

Green & Blacks – Dark Chocolate, Hazelnut & Currant, Ginger, Maya Gold, Espresso, Spiced Chilli, Lemon, Mint Divine –

Dark Chocolate Mint Thins, Dark Chocolate Ginger Thins, dark chocolate bars in various flavours

@Abraxan all the above chocolate flavours are vegan

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 30/12/2020 17:41

@SoupDragon you have given me food for thought! If you "think" of any more let me know Wink Grin

KarmaStar · 30/12/2020 17:41

Yabvu.you haven't even tried them.
Of course she is not going to buy animal products, even if they are not for her, each sale increases production.
Interesting you didn't put the vote on.
Your attitude is terrible.

2BDIs · 30/12/2020 17:42

YABVU she would no more spend her hard earned money on a leather handbag or a nice steak for you that she would on chocolate that contains animal.milk. are you aware of what a vegan is. I assume not as otherwise you would know that she could not justify buying a product that she feels is not ethical.

I am not vegan or even vegetarian by the way but I am also not ignorant. I have friend that wears fur Angry and I would in now way buy her a nice pair of fur trimmed gloves as I don't agree with it

namechangefail2020 · 30/12/2020 17:42

Wow, you sound like a shit friend

Ted27 · 30/12/2020 17:42

These kinds of posts always puzzle me

There is nothing added to vegetarian or vegan food which makes it veggie or vegan, and therefor not suitable for consumption by carnivores, it is merely the absence of animal products.

There is therefore really nothing to object to in veggie/ vegan food. Anyone can eat it, unlike things with animal products which means they are restricted to carnivores

I’m not a veggie or vegan but I do buy a lot of products labelled veggie/vegan - like carrots, peas, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, mushrooms, apples, pears, pulses, etc etc

My local organic shops sells really nice chocolate - most of it ‘vegan’. Its usually a lot better than carnivore brands because the ingredients are better quality.

Itsamess8456 · 30/12/2020 17:42

OP - some people are unkind in this thread.

Yes, she may have been unreasonable on the initial post but she has come around and feels a bit bad.

I don't blame you if you had some previously poor quality vegan/gf chocolate.

I'm vegan and I'd be grateful if you let me know what they were and if they tasted OK or not! I'm always looking out for good chocolate (vegan milk chocolate has been pretty poor in my experience so far).

ivykaty44 · 30/12/2020 17:43

I love the fact that Pringles smoky bacon flavour are vegan....
