Don't get me wrong, I love Harry Potter but I never thought about the Ron/Hermione thing this way before and she is SO RIGHT.

AIBU to think this is irresponsible in children's literature?

OMG! It's a fictional story

Would you turn up at a book club, or a school english lesson, or university lecture discussing Romeo and Juliet or Wuthering heights and say that to everyone?

Fictional stories are discussed on many levels. If you don’t enjoy the discussion go find something you do enjoy and leave us to it...

I certainly don't teach Romeo and Juliet as romance. It's generally more of a 'look how crazy teenagers are!' kind of lesson.

I've definitely found myself far more on the side of parents in literature since I've become one. When I realised that Merida turned her mother into a bear in Brave I was horrified. And her mother forgave her?? I now spend the film reminding DD that turning your mother into a bear is a very naughty thing to do. Grin

I wasn't, I strongly identified with her.Grin

My biggest bugbears are Little mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.

The Shoebox Project is a great epic piece of fan fiction that fleshes out the characters of the Marauders - infinitely preferable to what comes through in canon, in my opinion.

Lord, yes! And obsessive relationships! Shakespeare would be dismayed at how we view "Romeo and Juliet" as high romance, when it was supposed to be a morality tale about the dangers of going against your parents, who knew better than you. Talk about an obsessive relationship! These two literally died for love. And we teach it in school as romance! That just floors me.

I think that today's youth will survive Ron and Hermione. And I think that I shall forgive Ms. Rowling's working out her own issues in the books. Most authors do so, to some extent or another.[/quote]
That's the point. We don't teach them as romance or relationship guides. We read and teach them as stories, as literature.

Agree that both Harry and Hermione wanted the comfort and support of the Weasley family unit and that's why they married Ron and Ginny,

JudyGemstone · 31/12/2020 11:22

Also yes Tom Felton was the best of the child actors by a country mile, great performance. Not seen him anything since for some reason though.

Did Hermione get her parents back after? I can't remember from the books and there's nothing about it in the film.

@AccidentallyOnPurpose god now you're asking. I think so.....?

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 31/12/2020 13:22

I remember wondering that. I assume so, but practical self sacrifice was the name of the game for Hermione so maybe not.

Just because I've been thinking, and it would make even more sense for her to be with Ron for his family if hers was "gone".

I always felt both Harry and Hermiony got sort of tucked in with the Weasleys to round everything off nicely in the the last chapter - l like to think she was the making of Ron, that him scoring a genius somehow filled up the howling gap where his self-esteem was meant to be, and she had a high powered career and he sort of kept the homefires burning (my grandparents had this sort of set-up and it did work)
Hard to say about Harry and Ginny as she doesn't have enough of a personality to decide one way or the other!
I wanted Neville and Luna to be a thing ... Good thread, though - l need a re-read! Grin

I think Voldemort was so mean to Harry, much more so than Ron to Hermione... why couldn’t he have been nicer.. or at least a vegan ....

Weirdly enough I think voldy actually had bit of care. Let's be serious, if he really wanted harry dead,he would be.

True, I remember the original tale of sleeping beauty where a king made babies with her whilst she was sleeping
