Emotional abuse in Harry Potter

Don't get me wrong, I love Harry Potter but I never thought about the Ron/Hermione thing this way before and she is SO RIGHT.

AIBU to think this is irresponsible in children's literature?

@TheBuffster

His best friend is the boy who lived and better at Quidditch than him. His other best friend is the most intelligent person in the school.

To be fair being friends with Neville helps balance it out a bit. 😋

They aren't really friends with Neville though until later on. And he does save the day....
Wheresmykimchi · 29/12/2020 23:24

@AccidentallyOnPurpose

* Mrs Weasley kept trying for a girl. Omg I never thought of that. That's the saddest thing ever. Now I have Ron sympathy. D'oh.*

I thought that was common knowledge. Or maybe it's just from all the fanfic/comments/discussions I've read throughout the years.

No, it's in the bbooks.
PoleToPole · 29/12/2020 23:24

I'm not sure I believe that any child is 'aghast' at the relationships. Good stealth boast , but nah

How charming.

Wheresmykimchi · 29/12/2020 23:25

@TheBuffster

Yeah, but would Neville have been as woefully unpopular with the scar cred? I like to think part of him being so useless was his grandmother being horrible to him and knocking his confidence, that coupled with using his father's wand made him mediocre. Let's be real. Hermione carried Harry 99% of the time. It should be called Harry Potter and the credit taking of Hermione Granger's brilliance. I don't think publishers would have been keen though! Wink
She did. He's an arrogant, moaning wee boy. I can't bear him. I love the series though.
AccidentallyOnPurpose · 29/12/2020 23:25

No, it's in the bbooks.

This thread is just making me want to re read the books. AGAIN!

Probably not what OP was hoping for.Grin

TheBuffster · 29/12/2020 23:26

So if Snape and Lily stay out of it.
Neville's mum protects him. He become the chosen one. Hermione takes him under her wing. He survives using herbology learned skills as opposed to Quidditch heavy skills perhaps.

But who kills the snake?!

Seriously though.

I was the harry potter age. I read the books at the time. I never once thought ooh, how emotionally abusive these relationships are. Children get lost in the magic and the story. These are adult ideals that we push on things that aren't there.
And that's how it should be. The world is shit enough without kids finding it in books.

Same. And it's Christmas so you have to watch the films!

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants

Cant anyone just read something & enjoy it for what it is anymore. Must everything be analysed to its death? Not everything has to be a life guide, it can just be entertainment fgs.
I don't get this "children's books should be teaching kids how to navigate the world" stuff either. Characters in a book aren't meant to be role models
TheBuffster · 29/12/2020 23:29

Yeah the hocrux says it in book 7. I always thought it was lying though.
Also just thought Weasley family against contraception lol.

I'm sure Ron says it to someone at one point as to why he gets the stupid dress robes.

I don’t think it’s that. It’s more a good book is thought provoking- i’ve enjoyed this discussion as I’ve never really sat and thought about the HP books and some of the themes are interesting.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 29/12/2020 23:31

@Wheresmykimchi we already have. Grin

Bar the first one, DD doesn't like that one.

Since she properly got into it we watch them nearly every school holiday. She can quote it more than I can.

Her favourites are Luna and Fred and George and I quite like she didn't go for the "obvious " choice.

PoleToPole · 29/12/2020 23:33

@Wheresmykimchi my DD is 16, and she was aghast about Twilight, not Harry Potter. No, she did not use "aghast" as we don`t live in the UK and English is not the language we use at home.
Now do tell me, are the quality of my stealth boasts improving? Wink

Good lass!

What a change in the films 1-7. I prefer the books to the films but my favourite film is deathly hallows , couldn't stand order of the phoenix as a book but liked the film. I do love the twins I have to say Grin

TheBuffster · 29/12/2020 23:34

I love Fred too. Someone on here described him as a psychopath. I don't get it.
Ok, maybe the track record with Dudley and Filch is a bit poor.

I like the film bits of them on the wind up.

Yes, it is, which is why it is important to be able to see the world and all its flaws, and still be able to find the beauty in it.

True. Apologies for my Bailey's skim reading Blush
MoodyMarshall · 29/12/2020 23:37

The twins in the film are bum-clenchingly unwatchable. They're looking in different directions when they're meant to be conspiring, they're standing open mouthed when they're meant to be reacting. They're a masterclass in how to crash and burn when the cameras are on youGrin

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 29/12/2020 23:38
