Letting your dog lick your plate or cup after you’ve finished...

Is this a normal thing?! I’m prepared to get flamed as I haven’t been a dog owner for a long time, but definitely didn’t do that.
I was on a video call with a family member and they were drinking coffee. There was a bit left in the cup and she held it down for the dog to lick up, then did the same with her breakfast plate.
I found it a bit gross 😳 but then wondered if it’s just a normal dog owner thing that I’m unaware of!
It just seems unhygienic? But then I guess if things are going in the dishwasher afterwards maybe not!
I’ve seen people give their pets scraps from dinner etc of course just never actually seen them licking the cup or plate!

I’m only asking because I think I AM being unreasonable in being a bit taken aback, and am curious as to how common it is!

Disgusting, and I say that as a lifelong animal owner. Hope her animals are regularly wormed Envy

TruffleHeart · 28/12/2020 11:00

It's a bit gross - but if things are going in the dishwasher it should be safe.

ElizaLaLa · 28/12/2020 11:00

Vile. And I'm a dog owner.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 28/12/2020 11:06

There was a thread about this recently and it just showed how many don't understand how dishwasher works😂
It gets washed, it gets sanitised. So meh.

SmellyPooHead · 28/12/2020 11:06

There was a long thread on here a week or so ago about dogs licking things in the dishwasher The majority of people thought it was OK 😳
As a dog owner I think it's vile

ElizaLaLa · 28/12/2020 11:07

Not everyone has a dishwasher though.

vodkaredbullgirl · 28/12/2020 11:11

Not very often do my dogs get to lick the plate. When they do the plates go in hot soapy water.

nosswith · 28/12/2020 11:12

Disgusting. Animals should have their own plates or bowls.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 28/12/2020 11:13

@ElizaLaLa

Not everyone has a dishwasher though.
Well then you have hot water and soap. Which in the end works equally well if you wash dishes properly
Pipandmum · 28/12/2020 11:14

My dogs lick the plates. They go in the dishwasher after so are cleaned properly. I wouldn't do it if other people are watching as I know some are repulsed.

Pugdogmom · 28/12/2020 11:15

No I don't let mine. They occasionally sneak a lick when I am not looking and get told off, but dishwasher sorts it.

AnyOldPrion · 28/12/2020 11:24

DDog is very useful for when other people leave bits on the plates. Saves me having to scrape them into the bin. He will also climb into the dishwasher unless you stop him. It doesn’t bother me at all as I trust the dishwasher to leave the plates clean and germ free.

My mother won’t be happy when coronavirus is over and she comes to stay, but I’ll deal with that when it comes.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/12/2020 11:27

We do. Have dishwasher.

Dogs think we're great.

Inextremis · 28/12/2020 11:29

In 53 years of having dogs, they've always licked our plates and/or eaten leftovers off of them. Never once have I caught worms or anything else! Guess we just know how to wash stuff. Nothing disgusting about it.

thetaleunfolds · 28/12/2020 11:30

Dog owner, dog lover, and that is disgusting
We have an outdoor restaurant in my city where dogs are welcome, and the number of people who will let their dogs eat off the restaurant plates...it sickens me.

Lampzade · 28/12/2020 11:35

I saw a video clip of Lewis Hamilton sharing a large piece of cake with his bulldog
The dog would take a bite then Lewis would take a bite.

VinylDetective · 28/12/2020 11:36

I’d happily allow it. The dog’s wormed every month and we’ve got a dishwasher. The bloke doesn’t like it though so ours isn’t given the plates, scraps are scraped into her dish.

KirstenBlest · 28/12/2020 11:38

I sometimes let the cat do it. DCat was drinking my glass of water yesterday.

Justcallmebebes · 28/12/2020 11:38

I'm in the vile camp

AlwaysLatte · 28/12/2020 11:39

I think it's bad to let them lick it. If nothing else then it encourages them and they might take a sneaky lick while you're still using the cup/plate and you don't realise. Our dog is always trying to lick things in the dishwasher which is maddening.
More worrisome in your relative's case though is the coffee - it's highly toxic to dogs!

ginghamstarfish · 28/12/2020 11:43

Vile. Even if it does go in the dishwasher, the dog's probably just been licking its own arse or worse. It's no different from rubbing shit around your dishes and then saying it'll be fine after going in the dishwasher.

BringPizza · 28/12/2020 11:43

Ours used to get the leftovers off the plate (put down on the kitchen floor, too. How terrible) but his tummy is quite delicate these days so he doesn't do it any more.

Chanel05 · 28/12/2020 11:45

Vulgar.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 28/12/2020 11:48

More worrisome in your relative's case though is the coffee - it's highly toxic to dogs!

A 15 pound dog - approx 7kg, would nedd to drink 10 cups of espresso to have severe reaction. A lick of a bit of coffee will do nothing

Gobbycop · 28/12/2020 11:52

Gross.

Our dogs eat shit, why the fuck would I let them luck plates I eat off?

Some people are bizarre.
