Letting your dog lick your plate or cup after you’ve finished...

Is this a normal thing?! I’m prepared to get flamed as I haven’t been a dog owner for a long time, but definitely didn’t do that.
I was on a video call with a family member and they were drinking coffee. There was a bit left in the cup and she held it down for the dog to lick up, then did the same with her breakfast plate.
I found it a bit gross 😳 but then wondered if it’s just a normal dog owner thing that I’m unaware of!
It just seems unhygienic? But then I guess if things are going in the dishwasher afterwards maybe not!
I’ve seen people give their pets scraps from dinner etc of course just never actually seen them licking the cup or plate!

I’m only asking because I think I AM being unreasonable in being a bit taken aback, and am curious as to how common it is!

DH let's our cat lick his plate... It's a bit gross, but it goes in the dishwasher so it's not really a big deal.

CarolVordermansBum · 30/12/2020 14:30

This is if a plate with a bit of sauce is left on the floor waiting to be taken into the kitchen

Ah sorry, you let him lick your plates because he hasn't been trained not to leave them alone when you put them down, not because you don't put scraps in the bowl.I see.

MariaAngustias · 30/12/2020 17:25

I let my dog eat leftovers from plates and then put them in the dishwasher. I remember being at a friends house years ago and she put her daughters potty in the dishwasher and I found that very gross and said at the time it is not a sterilising unit! Each to his own, we are both still alive...

Sugarplumfairy65 · 30/12/2020 18:20

Those saying no because if boundaries, you need to train your dogs better. I can put a plate of food down and leave the room. My dog will not touch it until I tell him he can. He'll just sit and stare at it with a pool of drool in front of him. All taught with patience, rewards and kindness.

LST · 30/12/2020 18:28

@carol wrong again. Bless. He waits until I tell him too. Try again dear 😊

CarolVordermansBum · 30/12/2020 18:32

Yeah, I bet he does. Why would you tell the dog to go ahead and lick your plate anyway🤣

Absolutely vile.

LST · 30/12/2020 18:35

I'm just an absolutely vile person.. obviously!

Why do you care so much? Bit sad.

LST · 30/12/2020 18:38

@sugarplum same here. My dog will guard the plate from the cats (as they do not wait for permission) until I say ok 🤣

Arnoldthecat · 30/12/2020 18:40

VILE

CarolVordermansBum · 30/12/2020 18:42

Hmm, I don't know why I care tbh... I just hope to god I don't know you in real life and have never been round for dinner 🤢

LST · 30/12/2020 18:48

Right back at you 😉

This is exactly how I feel about it - I am a dog owner, and I hope everyone who comes to my place knows I’d never let our dog lick the human crockery...
pigsDOfly · 30/12/2020 19:16

I have never let my dog lick plates intended for human use.

I wouldn't eat out of her bowl, so why would I let her eat out of my bowls or plates?

I love my dog but I really don't want to share my crockery with her.

A dog's mouth is disgusting, they're scavengers and they pick up all sorts of nasty stuff when out on walks.

Yes, I know the plates are going to be washed but the thought that a dog might have been chowing down on another dog's poo or half a dead rat and then licking any human crockery that I might eat off is just revolting to me.

I don't let my dog lick my face either, something I find equally revolting.

Seems a lot of folks here don't mind at all. The mind boggles.

TheOneLeggedJockey · 30/12/2020 19:25

There is clearly a reason humans and dogs have separate eating implements, and people who haven’t been raised by wolves understand this.

I can only hope that all the dog licking owners also align with all the social recluses that populate Mumsnet, and so the only people eating off plates that dogs have slobbered over, are their owners.

Frankola · 30/12/2020 19:28

I'm an animal lover and lifelong dog owner and I wouldnt do this! Envy (not envy)

MrsFluffyMuff · 30/12/2020 19:29

@TheOneLeggedJockey

Absolutely spot on 🤣🤣🤣

Scarlettpixie · 30/12/2020 19:31

I am fine with dogs licking plates and bowls. That said, I wouldn’t give them coffee ever or plates to lick while I was on a zoom call!

Crankley · 30/12/2020 19:33

How can you not approve, they lick it clean, it saves you having to wash up.

Only kidding in case someone actually thinks I was being serious. Nothing would surprise me on here.

Seriously, providing the plates are washed well, I don't see a problem.

itbemay1 · 30/12/2020 19:48

My dog loves a cup of tea, cup goes in dishwasher so I'm a bit meh about it..

Have you ever seen any of Janey Godley's videos, @Aberforthsgoat? (Scottish comedian/impressionist). Occasionally features her wee dachshund Honey sharing slurps from her cup of tea. 😂

DillonPanthersTexas · 30/12/2020 19:59

I don't mind if the dog licks the plates, toilet brush, mooncup or potty before they go in the dishwasher.

Now you're just being goady.

You know you can't own a toilet brush and be a true mumsnetter.

Pfffft...... I let the workman use the toilet brush
