Letting your dog lick your plate or cup after you’ve finished...

Is this a normal thing?! I’m prepared to get flamed as I haven’t been a dog owner for a long time, but definitely didn’t do that.
I was on a video call with a family member and they were drinking coffee. There was a bit left in the cup and she held it down for the dog to lick up, then did the same with her breakfast plate.
I found it a bit gross 😳 but then wondered if it’s just a normal dog owner thing that I’m unaware of!
It just seems unhygienic? But then I guess if things are going in the dishwasher afterwards maybe not!
I’ve seen people give their pets scraps from dinner etc of course just never actually seen them licking the cup or plate!

I’m only asking because I think I AM being unreasonable in being a bit taken aback, and am curious as to how common it is!

I think maybe for me it was just grim to see. The slobbering around the cup... I don’t know, it just turned my stomach a bit and I’m a dog lover!

I dont do it often but I have no issues doing so e.g. left over mashed potato is a favourite. Providing lots of hot soapy water afterwards. Would never do so in front of others or admit to it IRL as I know people are repulsed by it.

VestaTilley · 29/12/2020 19:19

WTAF?? No! Disgusting and unhygienic.

Also really bad for the pet’s health.

Cherrysoup · 29/12/2020 19:21

Utterly foul, no way.

MerchantOfVenom · 29/12/2020 19:22

The previous thread on this ran and ran.

I’m a dog owner, and I think it’s grim. No way.

Billben · 29/12/2020 19:25

No way. Yuck.

Mincepiehangover · 29/12/2020 19:27

Yuck. Just as l wouldn't eat anything out of a dog bowl after it has been washed.

damnthemanatee · 29/12/2020 19:51

I wouldn't let my dog lick my plates but mainly because there needs to be a clear boundary between their food and our food.

I can't stand dogs begging for food and this will just encourage it.
Plus, there is so much that dogs shouldn't eat. I hate watching my friend's dog finish his cup of tea and want to say something so much because it's harmful.
Dogs also shouldn't have lots of dairy, they shouldn't have gravy as it's got too much salt in it etc etc

I really wish people would do a bit more research and not risk their dog's health.

AnyOldPrion · 30/12/2020 00:48

Oh god.
Why?
So hideous.
Scrape into a dog bowl if you must.

He doesn’t have a food bowl and It’d be unfair to put it in his water so we’ll carry on as we are. It’s not remotely hideous. Disgust at something wholly harmless is irrational. Raw chicken is way more of a risk.

He doesn’t beg when we’re eating either, though I confess he’s a menace when you’re trying to load the dishwasher and his head is in the way.

pinbinpin · 30/12/2020 00:51

I let my cat lick my bowl after I've had cereal or ice cream or custard - she loves it! I can't get worked up about it, they go through a steaming dishwasher and then sit in the cupboard for days before being used again.

AnyOldPrion · 30/12/2020 00:53

What makes you think we aren’t? I suspect obesity and poor bleeding are far more of a health problem in dogs than letting them have a few table scraps. No chocolate, onion/garlic, bones or raisins/grapes allowed, obviously.

AnyOldPrion · 30/12/2020 00:54

Breeding, not bleeding (though bleeding isn’t healthy either....)

WouldstrokeTomHardy · 30/12/2020 00:57

Skanky. Recent post about letting the doggo lick plates in the dishwasher turned my guts. Filthy

NiceandCalm · 30/12/2020 01:35

I put my plate down for my dog to lick clean and say 'well at least I don't have to wash that plate' - it's a joke obviously, it gets washed up. My dog was always nicking stuff off my son and he's the healthiest child I know. I wouldn't let the dog do it in front of company as I know some people are horrified.

vodkaredbullgirl · 30/12/2020 01:39

People are so dramatic it's a bit of dog slobber, plates are getting in to hot soapy water or a dishwasher

DramaAlpaca · 30/12/2020 01:42

Meh. It's known as the dog cycle in our house.

I don't care what anyone online thinks though I must admit I wouldn't let anyone outside the family see

I don't let them have anything that can't go in the dishwasher, at least it's sanitised after being licked clean.

LeahDownTheLane · 30/12/2020 01:53

Nope and that is coming from someone who shares their home with six dogs that are very much family members. Firstly it’s not food that they need, they get their own they definitely don’t need mine. Secondly they learn very quickly that they’ll get scraps and they’ll hound you for them, nothing worse then sitting down with family or friends for dinner and the dogs are all hanging around trying to get something.

Good god. He doesn't have his own bowl?

Do you all eat off the floor?

ChristmasUserName2020 · 30/12/2020 06:08

So grim 🤮 🤮 I wouldn’t want to eat off that plate even after it had been washed! Also I don’t think it’s training the dog very well and showing it where it stands in the home e.g. dogs should be bottom of the pecking order to keep them in order, not fed on demand.

Not a dog lover.

Juanbablo · 30/12/2020 06:10

I don't let our dog do this. Sometimes he will sneak into the dishwasher as I'm loading it and try and lick the plates but he gets shooed away. I think it's gross.

AnyOldPrion · 30/12/2020 06:17

No, but he does, floor or ground, perhaps searching for it on the lawn. Some of his food is used for training, though not as much of it as I probably should.

OzziePopPop · 30/12/2020 06:32

I have three dogs and have fostered over 100. For me it’s a hard no, yuk!

DorisDaisyMay · 30/12/2020 06:40

I don't have a dog but my parents in law does this and it turns my stomach. Absolutely gross.

But I still have to eat off their plates and so do my children and so I try as hard as I can to not dwell on it.

Gothamgirl1970 · 30/12/2020 06:45

I have multiple dogs and a dishwasher. On walks mt gogs put their snouts into everything from fox poo to reach and all kinds of disgusting stuff so absolutely no.

However the bigger issue is that you are meant to be the pack leader ( even if it’s just one dog) pack leaders show semi alpha behaviour to have a well trained dog. If anyone lets their animals ear or lick their plate, that’s a signal to a dog that they are the pack leader mot you.

Downunderduchess · 30/12/2020 07:31

I let my dog have my plate when I’d finished, he loved it! The plate got washed. The end.
