Letting your dog lick your plate or cup after you’ve finished...

Is this a normal thing?! I’m prepared to get flamed as I haven’t been a dog owner for a long time, but definitely didn’t do that.
I was on a video call with a family member and they were drinking coffee. There was a bit left in the cup and she held it down for the dog to lick up, then did the same with her breakfast plate.
I found it a bit gross 😳 but then wondered if it’s just a normal dog owner thing that I’m unaware of!
It just seems unhygienic? But then I guess if things are going in the dishwasher afterwards maybe not!
I’ve seen people give their pets scraps from dinner etc of course just never actually seen them licking the cup or plate!

I’m only asking because I think I AM being unreasonable in being a bit taken aback, and am curious as to how common it is!

Our dogs used to eat grapes and cherries and atuff like that. Bastards kept harvesting it before we got to it🤦 Smart and fast. I saw mine actually standing on little raised wall to reach the bloody cherries! He lived till very good age of 18. Considering he was highly malnourished 8 week old when he was found abandoned and so carried some health implications from that, not bad. I think he just built up an immunity to the toxins😂

I xan assure you if you eat from some cheap takeaway you all most likely had worse things in mouth than food served on WASHED plate previously licked by a dog...

@Gothamgirl1970

I have multiple dogs and a dishwasher. On walks mt gogs put their snouts into everything from fox poo to reach and all kinds of disgusting stuff so absolutely no.

However the bigger issue is that you are meant to be the pack leader ( even if it’s just one dog) pack leaders show semi alpha behaviour to have a well trained dog. If anyone lets their animals ear or lick their plate, that’s a signal to a dog that they are the pack leader mot you.

Apart from this alpha dog pack behaviour stuff being ridiculously outdated dog training theory, even if it was true it's inaccurate.

Pack leaders often eat last, making sure pups and weaker members of the group get the nourishment they need. And even if they do eat first, the rest of the pack then finishes off what's left –exactly the same as licking a plate.

I wish people would stop peddling this rubbish.

Depends on if it's a nice plate or not Wink.

I take the two seconds to scrape leftovers into a designated dish for the dogs. My teenage dc frequently CBA & just put their plates on the floor.

They know I'll go mental if it's my cherished home thrown local artisan pottery, because some Sasquatch footed klutzing numpty -probably me - will inevitably trip over it & smash it.

I'm not so bothered if it's a crappy supermarket plate!

From a hygiene POV, meh. We wash up in very hot soapy water, it's fine.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/12/2020 09:32

Yup. And your dog can still be well trained even when given left overs on a plate. Mine never touched plates until they were on the floor in a specific place in a kitchen by cat bowls. They didn't beg. When we eat outside (a lot in a summer) they stayed a good distance and came only when called.

LST · 30/12/2020 09:40

Meh. It isn't something I can get worked up about. Mine does sometimes if I leave a cup or plate on the floor before I take it to the kitchen. We don't use a dishwasher either. I don't care if people think its disgusting. They don't eat at my house

mistletoeandsigh · 30/12/2020 11:24

I did that when I was a kid. Wouldn't now though. My friend used to share her ice cream with her cat and I always found that grin, too.

CarolVordermansBum · 30/12/2020 11:28

My dog

Licks his own genitals

Licks other dogs genitals
Eats various other animals shit
Sometimes eats dead things
Eats the cats sick

There is no way he's licking my plates

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/12/2020 11:49

Licks other dogs genitals

Tbf most people do that and there is no guarantee they sanitise their mouth before drinking from a glass or using cutlery...

LST · 30/12/2020 11:50

Me and dp lick each others genitals.. so is that really an argument 🤔 🤣

CarolVordermansBum · 30/12/2020 11:53

But surely it's different when it's another species, no? Just because I would kiss my partner after oral I wouldn't want my dog licking my face or my plates after he's been licking next doors dogs arse Confused
I have no qualms with sharing cutlery or plates with humans

LST · 30/12/2020 11:53

Twas a joke

MrsFluffyMuff · 30/12/2020 11:55

I can't believe you wouldn't let your dog licking other dogs shitty arses and willies put you off them licking your plates just because you those things with your human partner, wtf!!

LST · 30/12/2020 12:04

I repeat! IT WAS A JOKE. Jesus

CarolVordermansBum · 30/12/2020 12:08

I dont think @SchrodingersImmigrant was joking

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/12/2020 12:08

How many people drunk from badly washed glass in a club someone before drunk from after giving a random a blowjob😂
Or a takeaway where, well... The feces part may be covered there.
But uuuuuu, dogs licking paltes which will get washed ais bad😂

The plates get fucking washed🙄

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/12/2020 12:10

Oh and to be fair to takeaways, posh restaurants can have mice too (as proven number of times by closures under "technical issues")

CarolVordermansBum · 30/12/2020 12:12

All I can say is eww. Feel sorry for anyone who eats at your house haha .Your logic is 'screw it, humans have dirty mouths and give each other oral so may as well let the dog lick my plates' 🤣🤣

beavisandbutthead · 30/12/2020 12:13

Its disgusting and not necessary for a dog to be given human food or bloody coffee.

I have seen the photos of the pre wash where dogs are in licking the plates in the dishwasher.

Not for me and I have a dog.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/12/2020 12:15

Well I understand how washing dishes work so I simply have no issuue with it
MrsFluffyMuff · 30/12/2020 12:16

Crack on then love, let the dog lick away lol

LST · 30/12/2020 12:16

You have no need to feel sorry for anyone. I wash my plates. I dont let the dog lick them and think 'fuck it that will do' and put them back in the cupboard

CarolVordermansBum · 30/12/2020 12:20

Hahahaha good for you! Still would rather my dog just didn't lick them though, I'm not so lazy that I can't be arsed to put stuff in his bowl

AnneElliott · 30/12/2020 13:12

One of my cats finishes off my yoghurt once I've eaten it. The others get custard or ice cream off our fingers once we've finished. Guess that's much harsher with dogs though!! Cats are quite delicate when eating.

Bowl goes into an intensive wash in the dishwasher- but my mother still eyes my dishes with suspicion! She hasn't got over the shock of seeing one of mine steal a prawn from a plate on the table at the end of a party!!

LST · 30/12/2020 13:14

Neither am I? Where does it say I dont put stuff in his bowl? This is if a plate with a bit of sauce is left on the floor waiting to be taken into the kitchen. I aren't the least bit lazy
