to get things straight i am a pet lover and grew up with many different dog breeds. some with great personalities of their own and good company but they are pets at the end of the day right?. i never had any problem if a dog wanted to sleep in my bedroom but they had a dog's bed. surely encouraging a dog to sleep in your bed is setting the dog up for a fall? god forbid something ever happened to you as the owner and the dog had to be rehomed it could be a nightmare for the dog's new owner if they are strict about dog/human boundaries. so what do you think?

@CarlottaValdez

I’m not sure it would occur to me to adjust the way I do things in case I die and then my dog has to get used to a new way of doing things. That’s quite extreme forward planning.

I'm also extremely puzzled by the idea of not letting the dog sleep on the bed because of the problems that could cause for the dog and potential new owner if you die.

Who the hell lives life like that?

All the things you could never do in case you die and it causes problems to other people: make friends, get married, have children, book a holiday months in advance and so many more; very strange attitude.

@pigsDOfly justification for moral faux horror. Making one look less of a judgy nause Grin

@ShesMadeATwatOfMePam

I read some threads on here and wonder why some women let their bloke sleep in their bed tbh.

@ludothedog

My dog was absolutely not allowed to sleep in my bed, problem was she didn't listen! Broke my heart when she was too old and arthritic to jump up into bed with us.

Look at that were sleeping face, who wouldn't want a snuggle with that wee hairy beastie!

That photo is just gorgeous.
Alann01 · 27/12/2020 20:49

My cats let me sleep in their super king size bed they are generous like that but their cat friends think it's strange.

gurglebelly · 27/12/2020 20:53

I don't understand why people let kids sleep in their beds either, but each to their own 🤷‍♀️

pigsDOfly · 27/12/2020 20:56

@Nohomemadecandles

Ah yes, of course Grin

lidoshuffle · 27/12/2020 20:58

Aww @MissJeanLouise. I'm trying to work out which bit of dog is where!

iswhois · 27/12/2020 21:08

@firthy85 I don't have children
So not sure how that works in your "ranking" system HmmHmm

Babyroobs · 27/12/2020 21:08

My two sleep in the bed with me. It's no one else's business what I do in my own bed. I love my dogs. There are so many dog thefts happening in my area I like them near me.

CokeAndPepsi · 27/12/2020 21:10

it also gives the new owner a much clearer idea of how the dog has found the last 24 hours or so (hard = snuggly dog, easy = more independent)

@WiddlinDiddlin surely this is more down to the dog’s personality, temperament, and experience?

I have a wonderful lab. I never used to let him sleep upstairs, let alone my bed but hes my best friend and has been my rock esp with all that's gone on in 2020 (and I got divorced this year and have raised my kids single handed on top of it all)
I know it's not the most hygienic, he sleeps at the foot of my bed on top of the covers and I wash my sheets very regularly since hes started sleeping there. He also has a bed upstairs that he can hop off to if he wants to.
Since hes started sleeping on my bed, I have slept so much better.

@firthy85

i think what it is with me is that so many dog owners seem to treat taking the dog to bed as the same as letting their dc come to bed with them. sorry but it's not the same. your child overtime learns that they have their own bedroom and it gradually fades out. dog's don't have the same mindset as humans and i think sometimes people are so rediculously obsessed withtheir dogs that they can't seem to understand the difference. they are part of your family but they are far below the chain of your family environment
Haha what? Sorry but if you don't make family decisions with your dogs in mind then frankly, you're not fit for the responsibility of dog ownership. I am very aware that children come first, but you should ABSOLUTELY always consider your dogs as part of your family environment.
MissJeanLouise · 27/12/2020 21:12

@lidoshuffle He has his head up by my knee, and his paws wrapped around my leg Smile

MissJeanLouise · 27/12/2020 21:13

@ludothedog Gorgeous boy 😍

bloodyhairy · 27/12/2020 21:13

My dog sleeps on my bed, but I'm single so don't have a partner to consider.
Besides, it's a Shih Tzu I have, and their sense of entitlement is off the scale Grin

Ratched · 27/12/2020 21:18

My bed has a hierarchy.
I have a (almost full), hqlf if the bed.
Black lab mirrors my sleeping position, golden retriever sleeps full length alojg the bottom and bloody cat sleeps on pillow next to me.
I always said it would never happen, but this way, i am not woken up at 5am every morning with demanding barks to be let out for a pee, they just happily snuggle in until I get up.
Usually at 5:05 for a pee 😄😄

babycorn · 27/12/2020 21:19

@bloodyhairy exactly the same situation here!!

She sleeps on my feet (I draw the line at under the covers), she is warm and snuggly, and far far far better a bedfellow than a) the wriggly toddler or b) the various men I have had the misfortune to share my bed with over the decades...

Plus she is like a mini alarm system. I feel a lot safer (abusive ex) with her next to me.

Ratched · 27/12/2020 21:19
  • half of ....... the bed!
Trinacham · 27/12/2020 21:19

I was brought up with a 'no pets upstairs' rule and always intended to carry this on with my own pets. Then we got our 2 cats. That rule went out the window. Wouldn't have it any other way now. Pets are part of the family and can sleep on the bed if you and they wish. Don't care what anyone else thinks!

smariewrtr · 27/12/2020 21:21

I got a rescue, he was impeccably trained wouldn't go upstairs or on any furniture. Is this an old thread and was he your dog?

We wanted him to be part of the family so he is allowed anywhere now. I love it when he sleeps on the bed!

aquashiv · 27/12/2020 21:22

Each to their own. Its not as if you wouldn't check that the dog didn't have turd hanging out of its arse.. They are very clean animals and very cuddly.

@Cribbles

After 33 years of marriage I know it’s over but what do you actually say or how do you move on ? My husband seems to just moan all day long about everything and anything (things that don’t even concern him!) Anyway, he has worn me right down , he can’t say anything nice about me but I also know he can’t really live/cope without me either ! I want freedom , I don’t want another man I just just want to come home from work and not listen to someone being so negative . We have brought up our family (6 children) who we are all so proud of (I am 53) . I know I love and care for him but I don’t think I’m ‘in love with him’ which actually hurts and difficult to admit . Anyone else in or have been in this situation? If so, I would love to hear your thoughts / experience. Thanks x

Hi @Cribbles
Unfortunately you have posted this onto someone's thread about dogs.
If you repost this into a new thread under relationships topic hopefully you will get some helpful responses to what sounds very difficult for you Thanks

Plzhelpme56 · 27/12/2020 21:26

My dog sleeps on my bed. When we go on holiday she dutifully goes into a crate at my parents without a moan. They know what they’re doing, they only bark and whine as they know it gets you to pander to them. We have the routine down. Bed with us, no bed anywhere else
