To not think I should have to thank them

I went on a walk to the supermarket earlier and came Across a group of people talking on a pavement. They were outside a house clearly talking to the person who lived in the house. They moved as I approached them and then the woman shouted thank you at me.
I’m not a rude person but I don’t think you should have to thank someone when they are on a pavement.

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t thank them? Do you own the pavement?

Coriandersucks · 27/12/2020 15:19

I would have said thank you

Neron · 27/12/2020 15:19

They moved to let you pass, I wouldnhave said thanks.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 27/12/2020 15:20

You should have said thank you and you know it. Are you often rude?

Spied · 27/12/2020 15:20

I'd have said 'thankyou' or at the very least a nod and a smile.

Orf1abc · 27/12/2020 15:20

They moved out of your way. It is polite to say thank you when someone does this. Don't we learn this as children?

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 27/12/2020 15:21

Absolutely you say thank you. Really boils my piss when you do something kind (or your children do) like open the door for someone or come off the pavement when someone seems like they're not going to - and they don't remember their manners.

HumphreyGoodmanswife · 27/12/2020 15:21

I would have said thanks to them. Its really rude not to Angry

Tellmelies65 · 27/12/2020 15:21

They wouldn’t have needed to move if they weren’t on a pavement. I think it’s rude to stand On a pavement talking.

OP posts:
2typesofjungle · 27/12/2020 15:21

They moved out of your way, the polite thing would have been to say thank you. Why wouldn't you?

BestOfABadLot · 27/12/2020 15:21

It doesn't cost anything to say thank you, that said pavements are for walking on not gathering around so they did have to move for you.

Tellmelies65 · 27/12/2020 15:22

No I’m not rude I would thank someone if they moved to let me pass for example if they were walking slower than me.

OP posts:
Moondust001 · 27/12/2020 15:22

I’m not a rude person
Contrary to the evidence here, which says you are. I always thank people for moving out of my way. They don't own the pavement, but neither do you and they were there first. It's common courtesy.

Tellmelies65 · 27/12/2020 15:22

In my mind they shouldn’t have even been standing there talking. We are in tier four area.

OP posts:
contrmary · 27/12/2020 15:22

You are correct - they are causing the "problem" by standing there talking, knowing that people may need to use the pavement for walking past.

I'd thank someone if they were also walking along the pavement and moved out of my way, I'd thank them, equally if we were both approaching a narrow part and they waited for me to go first I'd thank them. But in your situation no you shouldn't, because they haven't done anything to deserve being thanked for.

The woman was just being a bitch by shouting at you sarcastically. A one-fingered gesture would be an appropriate reply to a cow like that.

Imapotato · 27/12/2020 15:23

You don’t have to thank them, but I would if they had moved out of my way just to be polite.

Plussizejumpsuit · 27/12/2020 15:23

Why would you not thank them? Equally talking up lots of pavement space can be a bit selfish if you don't move. But the did so....

QuestionableMouse · 27/12/2020 15:23

Get a grip @Tellmelies65

People are desperate to see family and friends and standing outside is one of the safer way to do it currently.

You were rude and don't own the pavement.

Moondust001 · 27/12/2020 15:23

Really? Is there some law that says that pavements must be walked on and not gathered on?
AliceMcK · 27/12/2020 15:23

I would have said thank you.

I’m assuming they wouldn’t have been stood on the pavement talking to people in their house if they had been allowed in.

AldiIsla · 27/12/2020 15:23

Are we no allowed to talk in tier 4 now?

SoupDragon · 27/12/2020 15:23

I think it’s rude to stand On a pavement talking.

No it isn't. It would only be rude if they were in your way. However, they had good manners and moved for you. You, on the other hand, were rude not to thank them.

Givemeabreak88 · 27/12/2020 15:24

I’m with the op ,
I think it’s more rude to stand and block a Pavement so people can’t get past without having to ask you to move.

Plussizejumpsuit · 27/12/2020 15:24

@Tellmelies65

Oh so you're the covid enforcement police?
Mintjulia · 27/12/2020 15:24

They are observing advice and staying outside, not going into a private garden. They moved to let you go past which was polite of them.

Saying thanks wouldn't have cost anything. Sad
