They are just wellies after all 🤷🏼‍♀️

Please tell me about your amazingly comfortable & waterproof, low cost wellies????

After years of crappy cheap wellies, cold feet and chafed calves, Muck boots have changed my life. Worth every penny.

Skinidin · 27/12/2020 10:26

I have a pair of ordinary Welles that I tasted at Glastonbury ( think it was 2007) still going strong. Wear them all the time including going down the shore, I live on Skye so they get hard use.

Skinidin · 27/12/2020 10:26

My £10 Dunlops have outlasted three or four pairs of my friend's £100 Hunters. Not glamorous, but comfortable and very sturdy for walking knee deep in mud, which is useful where we live.

CounsellorTroi · 27/12/2020 10:28

Mountain Warehouse have a good selection £30-£50.

I brought Hunter wellies

They ripped the day the warranty ran out and Hunter refused to do bugger all!

I’ve brought joules ones. Faired slightly better

I’ve got horses. So wear mine all the time. I’ve given up on expensive wellies

My last pair. We’re £11. They’ve lasted me 4 years of DAILY use. I had another pair that were £9. Which lasted me 3 years.

But the expensive brands for me haven’t faired well with a lot of use.

Beautifulbonnie · 27/12/2020 10:35

Muck boots are brilliant

I brought some wolf ones and they’ve lasted me years and years now

Beautifulbonnie · 27/12/2020 10:36

Oh. Dunlop. Those were my cheap ones that lasted years!

Bloody brilliant.

CrotchetyQuaver · 27/12/2020 10:37

"Just wellies?" For me and others they are our main daily footwear at this time of year! I wouldn't dream of putting my feet in anything other than my neoprene lined Aigles. They are so comfy and supportive. I bought a pair of those cheap Dunlop ones once for summer use. They were awful, never again! Depends how often you wear them, but since I wear them daily for at least 6 months of the year, I don't begrudge spending £160ish on them.

Imapotato · 27/12/2020 10:42

Dd has Dunlop wellies. Cost £10 on amazon. Seem to be fine and quite hard wearing. I can’t remember what make mine are, but they weren’t expensive and I’ve had them years and years and still going strong.

vanillandhoney · 27/12/2020 10:48

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

I’ve had a pair of Hunters for at least 10 years, still going strong. Thick ridged sole, very good in mud or snow. I do have a sheepskin insole in there, too, feet never get cold.
Where did you get your sheepskin soles from @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER? I could do with a pair for my wellies for winter dog walks! Thanks :)
Northernstar1245 · 27/12/2020 10:51

Do you need wellies OP?

Walking boots could be more comfortable and still keep your feet warm/dry.

Honeyroar · 27/12/2020 10:59

I’ve never liked Hunters (had my first pair 40yrs ago) but I’ve heard that since they stopped making them in Scotland (10 yrs or so ago) the quality massively dropped. Nowadays they aim at festival goers rather than people who need heavy duty wellies.

Muck boots are expensive but wonderful if you get a good pair. I’ve had four pairs in the last ten years. Two were wonderful (although too hot for mild weather) and two split within a month. You can get fairly good imitations for a lot less money (avoid Dirtboots though). My husband loves his muck boots. They usually go four years before the soles wear off and they lose their grip!

toastfiend · 27/12/2020 11:00

I think it depends on the individual and what you want them for. I have the Aigle Parcours Iso 2. They were pricey, but I walk the dogs 5-6+ miles a day and I can do it in total comfort in them, so they're 100% worth it to me, whereas the cheap versions I had before had no insulation, so my feet got cold in the winter. Plus, they all rubbed my feet raw, flumped about on my feet and were generally dreadfully uncomfortable. I had Hunters as a mid-price option , but they split, rubbed, and were generally sweaty and unpleasant to wear. The Aigles also have good tread and grip, which is invaluable when stomping up icy ramps to muck heaps, and the adjustable calf means I don't get hay in my wellies!

That being said, if I wanted a pair for an occasional walk and pottering at home in the garden (or similar light wear) I'd probably go for Dunlops. I think my wellies are the 2nd most expensive pair of shoes I own, which is pretty sad really, but they're probably my favourite (comfort wise) and most worn pair, too, so it was worth it for me!

Scarby9 · 27/12/2020 11:02

Best wellies I ever had were from Asda at £7. Wish I had bought several pairs at the time.

k1233 · 27/12/2020 11:06

I'm in Australia and get a fantastic gumboot - Blundstone (made in Tasmania). They're about $60 AUD so not sure what UK cost would be. Never had a pair split. They last me about 4-5 years, at which point I've walked through the soles. Won't win fashion competitions but are grippy and waterproof.

thetemptationofchocolate · 27/12/2020 11:13

I used to buy cheap wellies but found they didn't last long £20 every few months soon adds up. So one day when I hadn't had to pay a vet bill recently, I splashed out on a pair of Aigles. They were over £100 but they lasted 8 years before developing a hole. I had to buy a new pair last year so am hoping those last as long.
The other advantage to those is they fit really snugly around the ankle so when I am wading through deep sticky mud they don't come off my feet :)

OMG! Blundstone do rubber boots! I have been wearing Blundstone leather Chelsea boots for 30 years! Just looking to replace my 4th pair.

@k1233, do the gumboots fit the same as the leather boots do you know?

longtompot · 27/12/2020 11:37

I had cheap Dunlop boots and they caused me to get plantar fasciitis in both heels. I walk my dog a lot so need comfy footwear. I now have a pair of Grub boots which were around £70 and IMO worth every penny. You can stand in a freezing cold puddle and not feel it. They have a great grippy sole and keep my feet dry.
That said, the foot part is rubber and as I haven't looked after them as well as I should have, they have cracked so I need to seal the cracks. It wouldn't stop me buying another pair though.

k1233 · 27/12/2020 11:46

@BikeRunSki not sure on the fit compared to their leather boot. I get mine from a produce store and they only stock the gumboots.

Beautifulbonnie · 27/12/2020 11:46

@vanillandhoney

EMU do a lovely sheepskin insole. Not expensive. I wear them religiously! I have Raynauds sadly. But hey. They work well. They do sheepskin boots too. Proper sheepskin. Which in the winter months I live in sadly due to the raynauds I’ve come close to losing didgits. So they have to be good boots for me. (But good doesn’t mean expensive when it comes to good muck boots or wellies especially). I went though 4 pairs of hunters in 4 years.

Ooh, thank you so much! I'll take a look. I'm a dog walker and the one problem I have is cold feet, haha.

k1233 · 27/12/2020 11:51

@BikeRunSki these are the ones I get - they're fantastic

Following with interest.
I love wellies, wear them an hour a day every day but none ever seem to last me more than a few months before splitting. I’ve tried Hunters, numerous Joules ( I know that they don’t last but they are pretty!) white stuff (actually lasted well) desperate for something that looks good but that I can wear to death!

Letseatgrandma · 27/12/2020 12:06

Are just brilliant! Good quality wellies, v cosy and great value - especially if you can fit into the kids sizes! So pleased with mine

@CaptainMorgansMistress

What would you say the kids sizing is like? I am between a 4/5, but it says to size up with the kids shoes and there’s no 6? Do you reckon I could get into a 5-I do have skinny calves Grin
