To wonder why a box of Thorntons choc is considered the worst (choc) gift

Received one and didn't realise it's supposedly an insult until everyone else's reaction

If you (or anyone else) doesn’t want them, I’ll pm you my address: I love them

LivingMyBestLife2020 · 26/12/2020 22:04

I’ve just opened a box which were a gift. They are my favourites so insult or not, I’m happy 😃

WellThankyouAJPTaylor · 26/12/2020 22:05

Snobbery? IDK. It's better than post-Kraft Cadbury's, I reckon.

I like a posh chocolate bar, but had some Thorntons yesterday and the fudge ones were very nice indeed Xmas Smile

SquidInALid · 26/12/2020 22:05

Why? Nah. I'd love that

ChristmasinJune · 26/12/2020 22:05

No idea, I bought a box as part of a secret Santa present (thankfully there were other "nicer" elements to it too) but I was a bit mortified to discover that this is considered a lazy and crap gift Confused

triceratops12 · 26/12/2020 22:06

Better than a milk tray IMO

Imapotato · 26/12/2020 22:07

Really? Send them this way... they’re one of my faves. If people want to insult me by sending me chocolate then that’s fine Grin

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 26/12/2020 22:07

I refuse to let anyone shame me for eating Thornton’s chocolates.

In fact I would quietly celebrate getting a box. Or twenty boxes.

No insult I can see.

Cocomarine · 26/12/2020 22:07

Is it?
It’s not Hotel Chocolat, for sure, but it’s a cut above Milk Tray.
A box a chocolates is impersonal and requires zero thought, so it’s a bit rubbish for a recipient that you could reasonably be expected to give some thought to.
It’s a go-to “keep one spare” at Xmas, in case someone gives you something unexpected.
I gave Thornton’s to my ex husband’s mother’s ex boyfriend’s new girlfriend. For that relationship - it’s fine 🤣

CounsellorTroi · 26/12/2020 22:08

I love Thorntons. Didn't know they were the chocolate equivalent of Bayliss and Harding!

BesideTheFire · 26/12/2020 22:08

I like Thornton's. Particularly cappuccino truffles and alpini.

formerbabe · 26/12/2020 22:08

I'd be gracious if I received them and would eat them but they're definitely not my favourite chocolate...or anything special imo. I'd never buy them for myself

formerbabe · 26/12/2020 22:08

Although I do love the Viennese one...

june2007 · 26/12/2020 22:09

Rather Thorntons then a box i ma eating at the moment they are not that nice. Think I got them from work.

cato75 · 26/12/2020 22:09

I love a box of continental.

Elouera · 26/12/2020 22:09

No idea about others, but I find their chocs all taste the same and awful! I really dont like the flavour of their chocolate!

HilaryBriss · 26/12/2020 22:09

I love Thorntons as long as they are the continental selection, not the cheaper chocs that they also sell though.

Nohomemadecandles · 26/12/2020 22:09

Save me the Viennese Truffles

katy1213 · 26/12/2020 22:09

Milk Tray, Roses, Quality Street all marginally worse.

ShirleyPhallus · 26/12/2020 22:10

Mumsnet is a weird place where everyone takes offence at everything which includes getting perfectly normal presents such as a box of thorntons

It’s also a weird place where everyone is expected to put maximum thought and effort for any gift the poster gets, even for a secret Santa gift of a fiver, and if it’s not 100% what someone wants they’ll ask for the receipt to exchange it

Siw2020 · 26/12/2020 22:11

Oh I'm not complaining, I actually quite like them! In fact I think I gifted a personalized box to DP years and years ago...

How has this commonly become known to a be shit chocolate gift? Why is hotel chocolat supposedly the best....

OP posts:
79andnotout · 26/12/2020 22:12

I got Milk Tray from my father in law. They really are shit but I've still scoffed the lot. I'd much rather some chocolate that tasted like chocolate rather than palm oil and sugar, but whatevs.

If I told him what I actually liked he'd happily buy those for me forever, I just haven't and so he picked up whatever was in Tesco. He usually buys me gin but I gave up drinking :(

cushioncovers · 26/12/2020 22:13

Any chocolate is a lame gift for an adult that can afford to buy their own imo, if I want chocolate I would just buy some.

Buddytheelf85 · 26/12/2020 22:13

I’m panicking now because I gave our cleaner a box of Milk Tray (plus a healthy tip). I absolutely didn’t mean to insult her.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 26/12/2020 22:16

Commonly known?

First I’ve heard of it.

Hotel chocolat is also lovely.

If folk want to be snobby and insist that their cacao beans are shat out by unicorns before being fermented in the tears of Santa’s elves and melted into bats by the blushes of 49 virgins, then so be it.

If you like em, eat em.
