Received one and didn't realise it's supposedly an insult until everyone else's reaction

@SisterlyCare

gave Thornton’s to my ex husband’s mother’s ex boyfriend’s new girlfriend. For that relationship - it’s fine 🤣

Let me guess, is that a funny way to get back at your ex mother in law who contributed to the falling apart of your marriage ?

Because that’s funny

No, my XH cheating was responsible for that all on his own, @SisterlyCare

XMIL still see each other regularly.
Some years after my divorce, she split up with her very long term boyfriend, and didn’t mind that we stayed in occasional contact - I’d known him 20 years!
His new GF got Thornton’s as I barely know her.
XMIL got a handmade fruit bowl from a local artist that I knew she’d adore, as I’ve been friends with her for 25 years.
Her son / XH got fuck all from me though 🤣

@BesideTheFire

I like Thornton's. Particularly cappuccino truffles and alpini.
I LOVED the cappuchino truffle but havent had them in nearly a decade, they taste great make my teeth super senstaive for some reason :(.

I know 'hotel chocolate' is meant to be the new fashionable place for chocolate but wasnt Thorntons the equivilent back in its day, if the quality hasnt dropped then I dont see the issue.

However the top go to 'gift' chocolates with always be Forrero Roche lol.

Got a thorntons advent calendar off a relative in November. It's been fab. Gorgeous truffles

I think this is the loveliest thing I've read today. It sounds like a beautiful present but just the fact that you're such good friends has cheered my up enormously too.

I've just checked the box for the cocoa solids content- Milk 20%, Dark Chocolate 48% minimum.

when I buy chocolate for myself, I generally get 85%, 70% as a minimum; probably why I find them too sweet and sickly

Oly4 · 29/12/2020 18:36

I adore Thornton’s, I’d be happy!!

Monkeypeas · 29/12/2020 18:43

It’s because they devalued themselves by allowing their chocolates to be sold in huge selection boxes but fairly cheap in Tesco.

As soon as they did that they devalued their brand and became the chocolate equivalent of petrol station flowers.
A Gift which is Relatively cheap and lacking in thought or much effort.

This was almost in parallel to the rise of Hotel Chocolat Who had the sense To keep stores to A minimum and otherwise only available in places like John Lewis.

They also tapped into a younger demographic with their chocolate slabs etc.

Thorntons lost sight of their brand positioning by chasing ever bigger profits and it cost them

NotMeNoNo · 29/12/2020 19:54

@Monkeypeas I agree re the petrol stations and outlet malls. It's a shame because they are not really that bad, not like Milk Tray or something with a trace of cocoa. They've been outclassed by other brands, I hope they up their game.

BonnieDundee · 29/12/2020 20:29

I'd take Thorntons over Hotel Chocolat any day
