To wonder why a box of Thorntons choc is considered the worst (choc) gift

Received one and didn't realise it's supposedly an insult until everyone else's reaction

The quality has massively reduced over the last few years with less cocoa solids being used and more fat and sugar - they are not pleasant to eat at all and I always get a box each Christmas as a gift which DH then eats

Thornton's too sickly sweet for me, much prefer Aldi's Moser Roth Grin

Calmandmeasured1 · 26/12/2020 23:19

I like Thorntons Continental so would be pleased to receive them. I actually don't like the luxury brands like Hotel Chocolat.

Holothane · 26/12/2020 23:19

I love them.

Pollaidh · 26/12/2020 23:21

It was a little tongue in cheek... I was answering as my very fussy French DH would (and in his case, entirely seriously). The chocolate recommendation stands.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 26/12/2020 23:21

It isn't a shit gift. It's just twats that have jumped on the 'this is a shit gift' bandwagon that say this. It's like when a few people started going on about how bounties were crap. .everyone then had to jump in at every chance with 'bounties are shit ha ha ha' 🙄

BrightYellowDaffodil · 26/12/2020 23:22

They used to be very posh.

And then they seemed to decide to trade down and all the interesting chocolates went in favour of them all tasting the same, and yet they brand themselves as if they’re something special.

If I was given them I’d not throw them out but I wouldn’t buy them, not least because they’re overpriced for what they are and there’s much better brands out there (without having to spend a fortune).

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 26/12/2020 23:22

I was gifted a box - v disappointing.
I was actually thinking of creating a post that I was surprised how bad they are were - mostly eaten, I forced myself
the Bayliss and Harding of chocolate.

The Hotel Chocolat ones were amazing.

I was just about to mention them - their 85 or is it 90% is good if you like dark, the whole hazelnut is ace.
Santaisreel · 26/12/2020 23:26

It isn't a shit gift.

£6/£7 supermarket box of chocolates is a shit gift imo. Thoughtless, impersonal and not even good quality.

Bvop · 26/12/2020 23:27

I dislike Thornton’s but I’m not offended when given a box. The in laws did this regularly, and I was touched by the thought and took them in to the office to share as I don’t like the taste.

Downunderduchess · 26/12/2020 23:27

Shouldn’t any gift (that is sincere), be appreciated? It might not be your favourite but plenty of PP’s have said they still ate them. If I genuinely didn’t like them I would just pass them on to someone who might (not regift, just give for no reason).

whydontkidscomewithauserguide · 26/12/2020 23:27

I absolutely love Thorntons chocs!

CantSayJack · 26/12/2020 23:30

Was gifted a £25 box of Hotel Chocolate and they were horrible, awful taste and flavours, most went in the bin. Give me Thornton’s anytime, at least I’ll eat them.

Stay123 · 26/12/2020 23:31

Love them.

Santaisreel · 26/12/2020 23:31

If it was sincere it wouldn't be a box of chocolates thrown in with the weekly shop imo. I think and shop hard for the people I love, to get them gifts that are personal to them and that I hope they will like. I wouldn't appreciate any box of chocolates. Thankfully the people that matter to me know me as I know them and I don't buy for anyone out of duty like so many people often do.

Toilenstripes · 26/12/2020 23:34

Until I moved to England I never knew people gave boxes of chocolates as gifts apart from Valentines Day. 🤷‍♀️

LolaSmiles · 26/12/2020 23:35

I thought it was more the generic nature of a box of Thornton's that was why people didn't like them.

If someone likes Thornton's then it's a great gift. If they don't then it's a fairly rubbish gift.

Joeblack066 · 26/12/2020 23:35

@HilaryBriss

I love Thorntons as long as they are the continental selection, not the cheaper chocs that they also sell though.
Cheaper? They all come off the same chocolate line- it’s the fillings etc that’s different. I worked there twice when my kids were little/ pregnant with my last. Better hygiene than any hospital you’ll ever go in, well run, always our go to chocs! (Tho Lily O’Brien Dessert Chics are apparently good!)
Nowaynothappening · 26/12/2020 23:37

Not really a fan but I don’t like nestle or Cadbury’s either. Lindt is probably the best.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/12/2020 23:38

I once had a supplier at work fuck up, and they sent me a massive cardboard box - like the size of a coffee table - with what appeared to be everything Thornton’s sold in it. I was absolutely delighted. (I did put some of it in the staffroom but my manager told me to keep it all since it was me who had to sort out the massive problem it caused.)

BackforGood · 26/12/2020 23:41

Can you tell me where it is "commonly known", as this is the first I've heard of it ?

bigpricklyfern · 26/12/2020 23:41

I nicely asked DH to stop spending (wasting) his money on Hotel Chocolat for me as I think they are horrible! I said I would be more than happy with Thornton’s or Milk Tray, but he thinks they’re too cheap, so now doesn’t buy me any chocs! I make sure I buy myself a box of each for Christmas now.

Italiangreyhound · 26/12/2020 23:42

It's not an insult, people are crazy. They are yummy. If you don't want them give them to someone who does.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 26/12/2020 23:44

Im not snobby about chocolate in the slightest

I used to love thorntons but they changed the recipe and it just didn’t taste as nice
