To wonder why a box of Thorntons choc is considered the worst (choc) gift

Received one and didn't realise it's supposedly an insult until everyone else's reaction

I must admit I'd rather have Thornton's toffee than Thornton's chocolates though..... now I'm craving a box!

MeringueCloud · 26/12/2020 22:27

25 years ago, or so, Thornton's was really posh. Have they changed since?

Zhx3 · 26/12/2020 22:28

I had a lovely bf when I was a teenager, who bought me the Continental basket - the one where the basket is made of nougat and you can eat it too. Still one of my favourite gifts ever.

Twobrews · 26/12/2020 22:28

Well I'm not best pleased as I've had two boxes of Thornton's and not a Viennese truffle in sight ShockAngry

As a generic gift I'd far rather chocolate of any variety than Prosecco or 'smellies'.

The highlight of lockdown 1.0 for me was ordering 3 Easter eggs from Thornton’s. I don’t why people are so down on Thornton’s on here to be honest. I agree it’s no hotel chocolat but there is a beauty to Thornton’s in that there’s usually a chocolate or two that everyone will like. Getting a variety box from hotel chocolat can be a bit risky. We got two for Christmas and there’s some odd choices in there and I don’t think they’ll be to my taste and while I do love the boozy chocolates, some can be really strong. Thornton’s always seems like a safer choice if you don’t know the personal tastes of the recipient that well.

Littlemilkjug · 26/12/2020 22:29

I think that's the thing, they've become the generic "I'm giving you a posh gift". Because they were a real treat 20 years ago, whereas now they're sold all over, and can be got for a reasonable price.

Elvesaremagic · 26/12/2020 22:29

I saw a documentary about Thorntons a while ago. British company, long history, cheery staff seemingly well treated. Id happily gift or receive their chocolate.

Moofart · 26/12/2020 22:30

My nan bought me and my husband a ig box of thorntons, she would be mortified to think people thought they were a rubbish gift.

Moofart · 26/12/2020 22:31

Pressed Post too soon, I'm happy with the gift because I like chocolate and it's from my nan! Lovely gift!

apples24 · 26/12/2020 22:33

I have a huge soft spot for them because of the snobbery. Would happily receive a box.

akerman · 26/12/2020 22:33

I much prefer Thornton’s to Hotel Chocolat, which I find too bitter.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 26/12/2020 22:34

I like Thornton’s.

I had some Lindt tonight and they were disgusting and revoltingly sweet

donnager · 26/12/2020 22:36

Please send them to me love Thornton's

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 26/12/2020 22:37

I think they're shit but I'd still eat them so go figure

Chickychickydodah · 26/12/2020 22:37

I used to loveThorntons chocolates but I worked in their factory for 2 years and i can’t stand the smell of them now 😩

Qqwweerrtty · 26/12/2020 22:37

My first boyfriend got really upset because I bought him ‘inferior’ chocolate for his Christmas present. He came from a very rich family and I didn’t. I actually spent the last of my pocket money on it and thought it was a nice present. I now earn considerably more than him. Life can be very satisfying. My Dad always used to give me Thornton’s and so they are quite special to me.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 26/12/2020 22:38

They used to be nice but now just taste cheap and far far too sweet.

safclass · 26/12/2020 22:38

I love alpini! 😍

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/12/2020 22:40

@Johan23

If you (or anyone else) doesn’t want them, I’ll pm you my address: I love them
So do I!

Much better than the pretentiously named Hotel Chocolat.

Xmasbaby11 · 26/12/2020 22:41

There are better chocolates available these days eg hotel chocolate. They are at the cheaper end so not a luxury for a lot of people. I still like Thorntons continental!

DressingGownofDoom · 26/12/2020 22:42

I quite like Thornton's, or I used to when there was a shop near me and I used to buy the clear bags of seconds. They were delicious. But then I clearly have no taste as I've been scoffing Heroes, quality street etc all Christmas rather than slowly savouring one bar of Tony's Chocolonely.

Janaih · 26/12/2020 22:42

They were once a bit aspirational, you had to select them at the counter Clinton's (to go with your overpriced card).

Then they started doing the mass produced boxes in supermarkets, everyone realised they were being shafted and artisan chocs became an actual thing.
That low level shame and anger will never leave some people.

RonObvious · 26/12/2020 22:43

My parents used to be given those baskets every year by one particular friend. They were amazing!
ErrolTheDragon · 26/12/2020 22:43

I thought Hotel Chocolat were something of a generic gift for when you need to send something to a person who may not be in - the long thin boxes designed specifically to fit through letterboxes were a stroke of genius.

swansongs · 26/12/2020 22:44

I love Thorntons. Doesn't everyone?
