When is a "normal" age to lose your virginity?

Name changed because this is something I would not like to follow me around on here, if you please Grin

I was having a little Xmas Zoom call with one of my female friends this evening and we got a little drunk on our (individual) Pinot Grigios, and things started getting a little personal. We began talking about our first times, to which I told her I had sex for the first time at 15. She immediately had a "Shock Oh my GOD, Goosefats!" response which I thought was a little mad as I figured that was a normal age.
According to her, it was far too young and I'm wondering what the general consensus is?

Obviously it's a personal choice, just to preface! I'm just curious as to what age you think is appropriate and what age you'd have a strong response to Grin Relatively light-hearted thread, and please be kind to my friend, she's salt of the Earth but relatively sheltered (bless her heart!). x

Well legally you’re meant to be 16 so I would guess 16 or 17 is the norm. I was 19.

AnyOldPrion · 25/12/2020 22:30

No idea what the average is, but I was 18.

EagleFlight · 25/12/2020 22:31

I’d say late teens.

Vitaminsss · 25/12/2020 22:31

I think that’s normal for younger generations at least (I’m in my early 20s and that was generally the age for people in my year!)

woodhill · 25/12/2020 22:32

Isn't it different for everyone and when you feel ready.

Metalhead · 25/12/2020 22:32

I was 16, and all of my female friends lost their virginity between age 14 and 17. This was in the mid to late ‘90s.

Starlive23 · 25/12/2020 22:32

I was 15, as were most of my friends or thereabouts.

NataliaOsipova · 25/12/2020 22:32

I don’t know, really. 17/18 probably? Under 16 is young (below age of consent, certainly- and it’s there for a reason), but I’d have thought it strange if someone left university without having experimented a little. So 16-22 as a “usual” range?

Tingalingtortoise · 25/12/2020 22:32

I think that’s early since 16 is the legal age. I was 17

PugInTheHouse · 25/12/2020 22:32

I would have said 15 or 16 was the norm for girls. Possibly 16 or 17 for boys.

dementedpixie · 25/12/2020 22:32

I was 16. One of my friends was only about 13

carnations23 · 25/12/2020 22:33

I'd say any time after 16, I was 21 but just never had the chance before that.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 25/12/2020 22:33

I think between 15 and 17 is normal?
I was almost 18, but have a friend who was 13. There's a lot of factors that influence when someone feels ready.

Northernmummy80 · 25/12/2020 22:33

20, I do think below 16 is quite young but atleast you weren’t 13.

PugInTheHouse · 25/12/2020 22:34

Most of my friends were 15. I would honestly think 17 or 18 was late. Obv 16 is the legal age but I wouldn't say most people I knew at school kept to that. Some were 13 or 14.

I do think kids are older now as they are generally much more immature than 15/16 year olds were 20/30 years ago.

BuffaloCauliflower · 25/12/2020 22:34

The average age is going up interestingly. It was 17 and now it’s 18. But it is an average of course.

I was 14. I was pretty ready and don’t regret it at all, but I do think it was young.

MissDollyMix · 25/12/2020 22:34

I was 18. I felt that was quite late. Most of my friends were earlier 15-17 seemed the normal range. One of my best friends was 14 which seemed young at the time (actually seems even younger now!)

goosefats · 25/12/2020 22:34

I think that’s normal for younger generations at least (I’m in my early 20s and that was generally the age for people in my year!)

Me too, Vitamins (well, as "early 20s" as I can fool myself Grin).
TMI, but my mam was the same age but my dad was significantly older, I do wonder if there's any generational differences.

I was 15, so were most of my friends.

Itmaybeus · 25/12/2020 22:34

I was 20 but was quite late to the game.
My siblings were late teens.

PinkDaffodil2 · 25/12/2020 22:34

I’m sure I read somewhere that about 1 in 3 have sev before they turn 16, I imagine mostly as 15 year olds. 15-19 would cover a large majority I expect.

akerman · 25/12/2020 22:35

I was 28, but very sheltered and very shy.

Nuffaluff · 25/12/2020 22:35

I was 17, nearly 18. Wish I’d waited longer to have my first time with a much nicer person.
I remember at the time feeling that I was quite late to be losing my virginity.

Hapixmas · 25/12/2020 22:36

I was 19, first year at uni. 15 is below legal age so I wouldn't say that is average. Most people I know lost it between about 17 and 19 (either with a boyfriend aged 17 or waited until uni)
I'd say boys lose it younger.

Littlemissnutcracker · 25/12/2020 22:36

I think about 18 but I know when I went to uni most had lost theirs at 16 or 17. I know a couple of people who waited until marriage. I don't think 15 is unusual at all
