To feel relieved that it’s not a no-deal outcome!

Whether you’re Remain or Leave the fact is that Brexit is going ahead. I was genuinely scared of a no-deal outcome especially after the weird 2020 we have had.

I don’t know the full details of the deal but I’m just glad that there is a deal rather than no-deal at all. Anyone else feel the same?

Brexit: Boris Johnson hails free trade deal with EU

At least that’s something. I was worried about trading under WTO rules.

Thoughts?

So prove me wrong on those points? It’s already demonstrably happening.

Leavers have always said they weren’t won over by any economic arguments, but claiming a “win” that doesn’t bring economic benefits is a Pyrrhic victory, no?[/quote]

*So we have had the right to work in Germany since 1973.

Maybe we should try doing deals with individual EU countries about getting the right to work in each of those countries.*

To clarify, this is not because we had a deal with Germany. It is because we were members of the EEC.

Why would individual EU countries agree to freedom of movement for Brits when we have just abolished it for their citizens and seem proud of having done it?

MrsMiaWallis · 28/12/2020 08:44

Leaving with a deal is most definitely an economic win for business. Perhaps no better than staying in the first place, but time will tell.

Right to work is very different from freedom of movement.

I know the value of having enough money sloshing round in the economy to fund public spending. Does that help?

"Perhaps no better"? Come off it. Compared with EU membership, clear economic loss in terms of gdp.

Bloody hell! talk about British exceptionalism!

We will have the right to work in the EU, in exactly the same way as EU (or anyone else's) citizens have to work in the UK.

Got the skills, the languages, the health insurance and the money to move? then go for it, otherwise you are stuck in the UK.

justanotherneighinparadise · 28/12/2020 09:29

I love the use of ‘stuck in the UK’. Yep that horrendous country that thousands risk their lives to try to get to every year and many lose their lives for the privilege. Fucking awful place 🙄

Friends of mine went to Germany to work during the 80s recession, in the 90s i lost my job in London and seamless relocated to Sweden, where i also found love!

In other words, we all did what Tebbit advised "Get on your bike....."

That option has now been removed from future generations.

However, you re right the UK is still better than Libya, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan :)

Devilishpyjamas · 28/12/2020 09:42

Oh are you a lexiter? TerryHeard?

If you think we have a Brexit that will in any way benefit the poor I think you are in for a bumpy ride.

I could have supported a Green Brexit, but we haven’t got that either.

I’m aware you were being facetious with your last comment but personally I’m immensely grateful I live here and not Libya, Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan. If you want to spend your days bitching about living in a rich democracy that’s up to you. Personally I’m just fucking grateful.

SabrinaThwaite · 28/12/2020 09:55

@TerryHearn

Well-heeled occupant of one of Ambridge’s most expensive developments.... Sounds about right. Breathtaking arrogance. Probably a BTLer. Angry that Brexit may well knock a few quid off of your personal wealth in the short term.

We were perfectly happy in an economic trading bloc until political union overtook it. Just look closely at the words I am writing, no degree needed.

We’ve left. If it gets bad you can sell your property portfolio. You may not be able to source a nanny. The cash in hand builders you use may not be around any longer. You will get over it. Britain will manage.

Gosh, that’s weird - constructing a view of someone based on an entirely fictional character in a radio soap is just a wee bit batshit.

Perhaps if I’d used the name Emma Grundy you could persuade yourself that I’m a salt-of-the-earth working class girl slaving away in a chicken factory and living in a caravan?

This is whataboutery.

It's great living in a democracy like ours. So many good things about it. And things that could be better.

One of the things that we had - and our children had - was the ability to work in Europe. That's gone.

The UK is a great place to live. So are other countries in Europe.

What we've done is similar in feel to people in Yorkshire declaring independence from the rest of the UK - so we would take control of our laws in Yorkshire etc - but we wouldn't be able to work in the rest of the UK.

Still - it would stop those pesky people from Lancashire working in Yorkshire. Grin

Of course, the UK can be a fantastic country (when its not raining) BUT when it comes to putting food on your plate, then work matters, living in a rich democracy when your unemployed doesn't do that.

100k mainly young people, work in europe each and every (normal) year in the tourist industry, summer jobs, no visas, nothing required, cheap and easy to do.

As i said, Brexit takes away the opportunity to easily work in a continent that is equally democratic and rich.

I am amazed that the UK has sunk so low (in your opinion) it is now seen as better than some war torn country.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 28/12/2020 10:04

Who are you youing terry

Is it the royal you, or directed at every person who voted remain on this board, or just some remain voters on this board or do you honestly believe that people who voted remain think the same way...all 16 million of them (is it 16 mil +?)

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 28/12/2020 10:05

That cheese thing was funny sabrina

I understand that some people were disappointed and upset with what was happening but that was unintentionally hilarious

TerryHearn · 28/12/2020 11:01

Plenty of “youing” from the Remain side. Nothing but “youing” in the main. I would say that calling any Brexit voter a racist, a xenophobe or any other cheap insult was what actually sealed Brexit. When you dismiss people they tend not to react as you want them to. It’s your own fault. Start listening to genuine and warranted concerns in future. Then you are more likely to bring people on board instead of pushing them away. You won’t change though. You are too arrogant to listen.

Hoppinggreen · 28/12/2020 11:07

So based on TerryHearns stats fewer than half of foreign criminals in British prisons are EU citizens

VeryQuaintIrene · 28/12/2020 11:07

YANBU but it's still rubbish.

PigletJohn · 28/12/2020 11:08

Own it Terry. If you're a Brexer don't try to blame pro-Euros for making you do it by being mean to you.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 28/12/2020 11:09

Aaah so you are youing everyone

I try not to, i try and take the high road, i like the word some

And i dont like calling people names or assuming that 16 million OR 17 million people think the same when they voted 4 years ago

Thank you for your answer terry, hope you have a good day

TerryHearn · 28/12/2020 11:15

Thanks for helping us seal Brexit. It’s in the best interests of this country. We couldn’t have done it without you. We really couldn’t.

Merry Brexit and a Happy New Year to all of you. Xmas Smile

PigletJohn · 28/12/2020 11:19

Goodbye Dominic.

Your work here is done.

TerryHearn · 28/12/2020 11:28

You’ll be remoaning in 20 years’ time. I feel really sad for you. Grin
