Where are all the mumsnetters who:

  • are mid-millennial
  • Extremely Online
  • left wing
  • probs on Twitter
  • do not think gaming is the scourge of society and causes you to turn into a zombie
  • does not know anyone who unironically plays golf

Bonus points for ex-emo kids.

Do you exist?

Also the amount of huffy condescension from people responding to this thread is hilarious

I have a theory that facebook killed off subcultures. No idea how or why, but just think about it, since facebook arrived subcultures have gone.

MedusasBadHairDay · 22/12/2020 18:07

I found my old deadjournal a while ago, it was just as bad as expected!

whoamongstus · 22/12/2020 18:07

@Sick

I do occasionally still like to listen to taking back sunday, brand new, AFI, sunny day real estate, jack's mannequin etc.

I've also just logged in to my old art & fan fiction LJ. Ahh, memories!

I'm not much of a gamer, I love games like animal crossing, stardew valley etc. Never been in to COD or the like. Although I do love borderlands.

YES to ALL the music you mentioned! I am going to go and listen to Drive Thru Records Greatest Hits immediately hahaha.

I listen to a lot of stuff now - I very genuinely love Taylor Swift and Carly Rae Jepsen, but my heart is still in sad boy music like Bon Iver ha.

And Animal Crossing. I was strictly the Sims (and still am mostly), but I am trying to learn so I can play with my boyfriend occasionally - I'm absolutely useless though so I tend to end up walking at walls hahahha.

@Laiste

I was a teen in the 80s. (An original goth, if you like.)

By the time i was aged 31 i'd long ago stopped seeking out and identifying with my generation label. You write as if you haven't quite got out of teenage hood OP.

I'm a proper grown up, honest. I own a business and everything. Sometimes though, just sometimes, I like to be mildly irreverent on The Internet. Hope that's okay.

As for the left wing bit, I am a man and was left wing in the university football team!

Good point actually. I think it's because it grew so fast and so widely that everyone got on it, whereas before you were quite definitely a MySpace or a Bebo person, or whatever. And then everyone was a Facebook person.

So you're on MN ironically? But you wouldn't admit it to your friends because they'd disapprove?

God, sorry, that sounds fucking awful.

People are so butthurt about this thread that I can't even..

Laiste · 22/12/2020 18:15

Yeah that's ok.

Irreverent isn't wasn't what i was thinking.

I have 2 kids who are millennials, one gen Z and one gen Alpha.

And i'm a gamer. And sometimes i'm very embarrassed by MN Grin

Not really - I started reading threads out of amusement after a few choice weird ones got posted on Twitter. Now I actually post and engage with select bits of Mumsnet entirely sincerely and there are lots of good people on here.

But no, I've never mentioned it to anyone I know - but then, isn't that the point of an anonymous forum? I doubt most mumsnetters are going about telling everyone they're on here. I don't know if they'd disapprove but I imagine a few would find it a bit odd.

Aren't they just? It's so funny. This is one of the most enjoyable features of MN tbh, the mad overreactions to non-issues.

I can't work out what's upsetting people about it so much. Maybe it's the golf. The golf was probably a red herring.

I’m with you OP.
I’m a proper grown up now (primary school teacher) and colleagues etc wouldn’t be able to tell the difference, but inside I’m still a 16 year old slightly awkward slightly alternative kid who doesn’t fit in with the popular crowd Grin
-teen boyfriend was the drummer in a punk ska band (think reel big fish, less than Jake etc)
-wore very wide jeans, converse and black band tees with rubber barbed wire bracelets and necklaces
-wouldn’t be caught dead in Tammy Girl like my teeny-bop younger sister
-had Kerrang or MTV Rocks on in the background all the time- still listen to Spotify playlists of these channels now
-had my nose pierced
-streamed music on Napster and chatted to friends on yahoo messenger
-went to Leeds festival, saw green day, the offspring.

-nowadays, very often on Reddit. Mumsnet for parenting stuff only but love the slightly voyeuristic look into people’s lives!

What do you play? And out of interest, do you see a big different between your millennial and Gen Zers (assume the Gen Alpha is probably too young to have a digital culture just yet!).

Forgot to add on the leftie front- took part in a stop the Iraq war protest out the front of my sixth form college, chanting “they want warfare, we want welfare” Grin

Yup right here! Bonus points if you know that if your feminism isn't intersectional, it's not feminism!

SciFiScream · 22/12/2020 18:19

I'm just outside of the millennial window (1977) but I'm very millennial in most of my ways of being.

I saw a cohort description xennial that suits me.

I'm extremely online on many platforms
I have a gaming family
I'm left wing and becoming increasingly more so.

I'm also gender critical. Sex matters. Biology is not bigotry. Live your life however you please type stuff.

You're exactly my kind of people!

Are you northern (from the Leeds fest bit)? I'm dying to know who the teen boyfriend's band was... I saw a lot of interesting bands as a teenager haha!

I meet most of your criteria and i will prove it. Come back to tumblr - you know you miss it. It’s actually a lot nicer now since they fixed a lot of the issues and it’s really easy to build your shared bubble of views/interests. Mumsnet has more useful advice though!

I'm the same age as you. I didn't try to fit myself into to an arbitrary social class though. And I don't really meet many of your criteria, I'm afraid. Working class background though. And I like the Sims (though have no time for it these days). I'm friends with lots of different types of people and happily admit that I'm on MN.

I actually still have a Tumblr but I haven't posted on it since about 2012! Again, I could probably just have posted 'Any mumsnetters who were also on Tumblr' and it would have fulfilled most of the criteria haha :)

Yeh you've just described me.

LittleRa, change Leeds to Reading and I could have written that, although boyfriend was alt-rock rather than ska 😂
