Where are all the mumsnetters who:

  • are mid-millennial
  • Extremely Online
  • left wing
  • probs on Twitter
  • do not think gaming is the scourge of society and causes you to turn into a zombie
  • does not know anyone who unironically plays golf

Bonus points for ex-emo kids.

Do you exist?

EMO, I was not an EMO.
I wasn't an emu either, but you could have probably guessed that.

U OK hun?

Serious question.

I wasn't gonna judge. Emus are possibly more scary than teenage emos though haha! I couldn't beat anyone at Mario Kart so you've got me there Grin

Yes cheers. I'm eating a mince pie and watching someone build bad robots on YouTube while my boyfriend makes my tea. Having a lovely day :)

I have to say I've had more people on Mumsnet, be rude to me than on Twitter, so just putting a different point of view across too.

(Awaits to be attacked on Twitter now, after tempting Fate!)😆

PhilCornwall1 · 22/12/2020 17:29

We spent a lot of time listening to My Chemical Romance/Fall Out Boy/Dashboard Confessional and wearing a lot of eyeliner in the mid-late 2000s. I have not 100% grown out of it yet hahaha...

Ummm, the only bit of that I understood was eyeliner. 🤷‍♂️

Same! But I follow very nice people on Twitter and don't really stick my head over the parapet, so that's probably why haha Grin

Asked and answered!

(I was forced to on a corporate away day. I was VERY BAD)

It's an odd requirement.
ReallySpicyCurry · 22/12/2020 17:34

God no.

I'm a millennial, probably about your age, practically to the month, I'm guessing, given what you're saying.

The only box I can tick there is the left wing one, but even then, I'd rather not align myself with the dreadful, screechy SJW types that seem to have taken over.

Fall Out Boy and MCR were, and continue to be, shit. Even aged 15 I couldn't believe anyone listened to them and took them seriously, especially after a perusal of the lyrics. Dear God, the bathos.

whoamongstus · 22/12/2020 17:34

@BebeStevens

I have a younger sister in that demographic. We could not be more different, there's definitely an air of "get in your assigned box and do the 'right' thing" that I simply don't have.
Yeah I think I'd agree that there is a lot of that. Some of it is well-meaning but misguided, some of it is just arseholes.

Best to just google image search emo kid, you'll probably recognise emos on sight. Was a huge teen subculture back in the day.

All of those teen subcultures seem to have died out imo. Or maybe I'm out of touch now and can't recognise them? I saw some goths the other day - hadn't seen goths in Dublin in years - which was nice. Brought me back to the good aul days of box dyeing my hair awful colours!

Sn0tnose · 22/12/2020 17:35

Millennials are 1980 - 2000 I think. So I am bang in the middle. How is someone born in 1990 an adult already? It was only a couple of years ago! 😔

Whats an emo-kid? Genuine question too Think diet goth, less keen on pointy shoes but big fans of sideways fringes that need to be flicked out of the way in order to see.

whoamongstus · 22/12/2020 17:35

I was saying exactly the same the other day Sionnach - either there aren't the same subcultures these days or we're too old to spot them. Miss seeing (/being one of) the little moshers hanging around Urbis in Manchester though!

TrialOfStyle · 22/12/2020 17:35

I think there’s more posters like that then you realise, but like all fashions of the past, would prefer to forget it.

I probably ascribe to a lot of what you said, did listen to all you listed but preferred alt rock, and still game a fair bit.

Though I’ve never really done Twitter, other than using it as an easy platform to enter competitions. I’d say ‘extremely online’ does extend to a lot of frequent MN users too.

'Diet goth'... you got me there hahaha.

And yep sorry, I'm 31 now!

I think a lot of people are extremely online now OP - WFH plugged into teams all day , relaxing with MN and Netflix . Probably not what you meant though ..........

Yeah. Sorry . I'm completely the wrong age group . Just clicked on your thread to see what you were talking about Grin

BoomBoomsCousin · 22/12/2020 17:37

I meet your criteria (I also have a twitch account) except I'm Gen X. I suspect we're quite different because of our ages though, more so than would be the case for any other single criteria you mentioned.

Interesting... out of curiosity then, what kind of kid were you in year 10/11 at school? I apparently only hung about with other emo kids (and I take deep offence at your FOB comments, but I agree on My Chemical Romance) so I don't know what, say, the Jane Norman bag and Rockports lot are like as adults!
OP posts:
SionnachRua · 22/12/2020 17:38

Yeah, it's a shame really. All I see nowadays are young lads with haircuts like llamas. I think a lot of it has moved online (like egirls).

MrsMiaWallis · 22/12/2020 17:39

My god. Are lots of people your age like this? "The rockports and jane norman bag lot"?

Yeah I'm beginning to think age might not be the be all and end all of the particular 'type' of person I'm thinking of... my boyfriend is a very top-end millennial/probably culturally more Gen X and he streams on Twitch and is otherwise pretty much the same as me!

hauntedtree · 22/12/2020 17:40

I tick all your boxes apart from being emo, was a bit too old for it. I suspect most of us stay away from MN due to its reputation.
