@ForestNymph

Not at all- far too many people are not abiding by the rules and are putting people at risk.

New Zealand and China have both shown that the only way to deal with this virus is through a strict, tough, harsh lockdown.

Frankly the vast majority of people can live without leaving home for walks or whatever excuse they have.

If we all stayed at home at all times for 6 weeks, we would save tens of thousands of lives.
Oh piss off. For most people its a mild virus, and doesn't justify such draconian measures. I feel like I'm living in a dystopian B list apocalypse movie with comments like this.

I am not going to be caged like an animal for weeks on end because you're afraid of a cough. Get over yourself.

@Whatwouldscullydo

Well lockdowns have failed twice so far so no.

I think money would be better spent on properly securing work places and schools than on UC for the millions of people losing their jobs and homes as a result .

Yes, lockdowns aren't working. We need a better plan, which is a problem as we have the government least likely to come up with a clever creative plan in possibly the entire world.
MercyBooth · 21/12/2020 19:24

Well we saw how the hysteria in the media played out. Government using the media to scare and emotionally blackmail the public into compliance with headlines like MUTANT COVID, but they didnt foresee how other countries have reacted. Serves them fucking right for using the media in that way. French are now demanding testing but apparently there is no idea of how to arrange this logistically .

Time for Leveson 2 perhaps. To run alongside the inevitable public enquiry.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/12/2020 19:25

Genuine question for those who think we should have a "proper" lockdown: how exactly would that work, when there's no chance at all of it being fully enforced?

And please don't say "even if only x% complied it would help" because that's not a proper lockdown ... what I'm genuinely interested in is how folk think the "can't/won't/don't care" people can be forced to comply?

zigaziga · 21/12/2020 19:26

Each household should be allocated one supermarket trip per week to be used for buying essentials only- not gin and chocolate Hmm

Grin Yeah, that’s the thing about COVID - if you are in the fruit and veg section reaching for bananas you are safe but when you stray over to the biscuit aisle it gets a bit riskier and then if you go as far as putting a family sized bar of chocolate in your cart BAM you’re dead.

Lorius · 21/12/2020 19:26

Absolutely @vates. We have been granted the privilege of leaving home whenever we want.

Too many people have abused that privilege by going out multiple times a day for unnecessary reasons Hmm.

Therefore, it should be removed and people should be told in no uncertain terms that they must stay at hone unless they are a key worker or going for essential shopping once a week.

@Lorius no Lorius they can’t. What about people’s MH? Oh wait, you don’t care about that. Just as long as you get your moment to dob your neighbour in hey?

AnyFucker · 21/12/2020 19:27

^Frankly I think we need aproperlockdown. Too many people are not following the rules and are putting others at risk.

The rule should be- unless you are a key worker, stay the fuck at homeat all times.

None of this outdoor 'exercise', meeting other households for a 'walk' (which is even allowed in tier 4 for some reason), or trips to the Range.

Each household should be allocated one supermarket trip per week to be used for* buying essentials only*- not gin and chocolate

I'd also like to see something similar to the French system where people have to carry a form every time they leave home.

I would support a financial reward system for good Samaritans who report neighbours who do not stay at home.

We would soon be able to eradicate the virus if people followed the rules and stayed the fuck at home.^

You frighten me. You sound like a psychopath.

ForestNymph · 21/12/2020 19:27

Plan should be:

Close overseas travel temporarily
Invest in NHS - bring back financial incentives for training
Invest in healthy lifestyle programs that actually work - including 4 day working week and affordable childcare to allow people to have time to partake
4 day working week to recreate the jobs lost
Bring back community hospitals to lessen the pressure on large hospitals
Allow sick leave without penalising employees, limiting spread of all contagious diseases
More school lessons to be taught outside and outdoors

Those are the first things I'd do if I were in any position to do so. But none have been because this government is a bag of dicks

sickohsickofthisshit · 21/12/2020 19:28

For me it depends on if they close the schools.

If they keep the school opens I'd support it

ForestNymph · 21/12/2020 19:28

Its not a privilege. Its a right. I do not need yours or anyones permission to leave my goddamn home.

Jesus. The fucking bootlickers really are out in force. Bet you'd have been first in line to join the Gestapo eh.

Lorius · 21/12/2020 19:28

@Puzzledandpissedoff

It certainly could be enforced if the government wanted to.

£100 reward for people who report neighbours out unnecessarily or too often.

£1000 fine on the spot for people out for 'walks' or to buy 'essential' gin Hmm

Problem solved.

You're insane.

IndecentFeminist · 21/12/2020 19:30

Bring able to leave your own home is hardly a privilege 😂

As a key worker in tier 1 it would make little difference to me tbh. I think it would be a shitfight elsewhere however.

Lorius · 21/12/2020 19:30

@ForestNymph

You do not have a right to leave home. The welsh government have taken the right approach with this and have been very clear that fines will be issued for those away from home without reasonable excuse:

It is important to note that you do not automatically have a right to leave home for these purposes – you can only do so if it is necessary and there is no practicable alternative.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/12/2020 19:31

@Lorius so how are we going to keep paying everyone who can't work from home but isn't a key worker? There are loads of them.

MarshaBradyo · 21/12/2020 19:31

I’m moving closer to Wanderings thinking

If people want to shut themselves away they can.

thelimitdoesnotexist · 21/12/2020 19:32

£1000 fine for buying gin???!!!???! This is absolutely the most insane thing I’ve ever read on MN

yes please do tell me how you will pay my wages?

No, I do. I have legs. I can open my front door and walk outside whenever I wish. Those are my natural rights and some pompous anal retentive coward afraid of a mild cough can't strip them from me, however much they piss and moan.

I am a free individual. No one owns me. No one can tell me what to do or where to go. Shove it.

MarshaBradyo · 21/12/2020 19:33

Lorius is extreme but there’s a fair few on mn wanting full lock down. No thought to damage.

Because they're selfish and cowardly. Properly annoys me.

Even the police had to back up on the trolley check idea if a shop is open then you can buy whats in it. Including the fecking gin. Off-licences were deemed essential and allowed to open so piss off

Yes they’ve done a cracking job. Highest infection rate in the U.K.

MustardMitt · 21/12/2020 19:38

I would as it wouldn't affect my life too much - my job is completely secure. I would prefer my kids to be in school but we'd make it work if we had to.

Both mine and DH's only surviving grandparents are in hospital/care home with COVID, I'd rather it went away sooner rather than later.
