to not understand the appeal of bread sauce

Just find it weird to put wet bread on your lovely roast dinner...???!!!!

I have a feeling that it might go back to years ago when it was used to 'bulk up' meals with leftover bread... or am I wrong...

It’s horrible.

zaphodbeeble · 20/12/2020 22:15

Try it, it’s nothing like wet bread

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 20/12/2020 22:16

Yuck

Seeline · 20/12/2020 22:18

I lovingly make it every Christmas for DH & DS whilst trying not to be sick. It is vile stuff

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 20/12/2020 22:18

Best part of Xmas dinner

ooherrmissus14 · 20/12/2020 22:20

You are being very unreasonable. I love bread sauce but only cheap packet stuff. My MIL thought he was treating me one time by buying luxury bread sauce from farm shop and it was horrible.

NovemberR · 20/12/2020 22:20

It's fabulous. Are you from the South? Everyone I know (North) loves it.

Is it a regional thing, maybe? Cos we were fed it regularly as kids. It goes brilliantly with sausage, mash and yorkshire pudding. I suspect it was to bulk things out, but I love it.

HollowTalk · 20/12/2020 22:21

It's delicious. Buy the M&S one - it'll change your mind!

Superstardjs · 20/12/2020 22:21

@GingerAndTheBiscuits

Best part of Xmas dinner
Agreed.
Holothane · 20/12/2020 22:21

I’ve never had it and have never wanted too.

TheGlitterFairy · 20/12/2020 22:21

Northern here and can’t stand it!

Thecazelets · 20/12/2020 22:21

I love it, but I am the only one who eats it. Is it a southern/London thing? We always had it when I was a child, and my family are all from London, but DH is northern and says it was definitely not a thing growing up.

woodhill · 20/12/2020 22:21

No, it's yuck and I'm not making it this year

ToniTheDonkey · 20/12/2020 22:21

@Holothane

This. It looks like it’s been eaten once already.
Daisydoesnt · 20/12/2020 22:21

Yea but it’s nothing like wet bread is it? It’s creamy and fragrant with nutmeg, bay & onion. Properly made it’s absolutely delicious with roasted meat.

Leaannb · 20/12/2020 22:22

Miss it desperately

I got a 'luxury' packet one the other day and it was nowhere near as nice as the bog standard cheaper packet sauce.
SwedishEdith · 20/12/2020 22:24

Northern and have never had and it certainly wasn't a thing growing up for anyone I knew.

TheSmallAssassin · 20/12/2020 22:24

I love it. In fact I'm wondering now why we don't have it with roast chicken all year round. I also like leftover bread sauce in my turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce and stuffing.

SarahAndQuack · 20/12/2020 22:24

It is an excuse to eat cream flavoured with nutmeg and bay. I love aromatic herbs so I love bread sauce.

Canwecancel2020 · 20/12/2020 22:24

Either a southern thing or a posh thing?

FraughtwithGin · 20/12/2020 22:24

As with everything, the taste lies in the quality of ingredients.
If you infuse your milk properly, get really good bread and spend some time, you will get a silky and delicious result.
Any leftover infused milk can be used to make bread sauce flavoured potato gratin, or savoury porridge or pancake mix.

TheSmallAssassin · 20/12/2020 22:25

My husband does make it from scratch though, we don't have a packet one.

Devillishlypicklypickles · 20/12/2020 22:25

I have no strong feelings about it, if its there at a carvery for example I might have a bit, but its not something I'd bother to make at home.

MajesticWhine · 20/12/2020 22:26

I love it. No ready made or packets though, it's one thing I like to make myself.
