to not understand the appeal of bread sauce

Just find it weird to put wet bread on your lovely roast dinner...???!!!!

I have a feeling that it might go back to years ago when it was used to 'bulk up' meals with leftover bread... or am I wrong...

Never had it or been anywhere that served it which is odd really. Can't say I fancy it though.

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/12/2020 23:21

I can remember not liking it when I was very young, but started to eat and enjoy it sometime during primary school. It's excellent cold with cold sprouts, a fact which I discovered only last year.

Bread sauce is what makes Christmas for me - it's the only part of the Christmas main course that I eat only at Christmas.

Deadringer · 20/12/2020 23:24

I like the packet stuff with chicken now and again but have never had it with Christmas dinner, didn't know it was a thing.

PickAChew · 20/12/2020 23:25

Eurgh, no. There's not a lot of food I actively dislike but bread sauce is on that list.

Redyoyo · 20/12/2020 23:25

It's definitely just an English thing you'd struggle to buy it here in the West of Scotland. Dh granny was from Norfolk and used to make it, i managed to find it in Marks one year, all kinds of wrong! Boak...

QueenPaws · 20/12/2020 23:27

No. Ew. And I'm northern
I eat apple sauce with roasts though in quantities which causes my dad to remark if I would like any meat with my apple sauce Grin

sbhydrogen · 20/12/2020 23:29

Hello, I'm a Londoner and I like bread sauce with my Christmas dinner 🙋🏼‍♀️

sbhydrogen · 20/12/2020 23:29

(Homemade, though)

MrsPernicious · 20/12/2020 23:33

It is amazing stuff, either cheapie packets of home made with loads of spices, especially mace, must have mace.

My DC's favourite meal was broccoli, bread sauce and some sort of fish.

Bellabelloo · 20/12/2020 23:39

It makes a Christmas dinner for me!!

Chickenwing · 20/12/2020 23:40

I only tried this for the first time a couple of years ago and LOVE it. It's stodgy and delicious.

SantasAnus · 20/12/2020 23:43

@NovemberR

It's fabulous. Are you from the South? Everyone I know (North) loves it.

Is it a regional thing, maybe? Cos we were fed it regularly as kids. It goes brilliantly with sausage, mash and yorkshire pudding. I suspect it was to bulk things out, but I love it.

I'm NW, and i find it absolutely vile. The texture makes me want to vom.

I must admit that I am the only person I am aware of, who finds it vile.

UrghThisIsHard · 20/12/2020 23:44

How very DARE you!!! Tis carby loveliness invented by angels.

RosesAndHellebores · 20/12/2020 23:46

It is divine when made to the recipes above. It is soothing to make and is deliciously unctuous.

Treat on Christmas night when the rest of the family are watching TV. Snaffle into fridge and take a small slice of turkey (cut one in two) add a layer of cranberry and a layer of bread sauce. A secret bit of heaven.

Return to TV watchers with a bowl of sweets and offer generously around. they never need to know

Happymum12345 · 20/12/2020 23:46

The only thing I look forward to on Christmas Day. Not sure what that says about me!

ilovesooty · 21/12/2020 00:04

I love bread sauce.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 21/12/2020 00:14

YABVVU it is absolutely the taste of Christmas. It’s so delicious and special I only make it at Christmas. Delicious with turkey, capon, goose and even ham. And so good on leftover sandwiches. Never knew you could get it in a packet. That might be nice for normal Sunday lunches. I’m going to investigate.

Nottherealslimshady · 21/12/2020 00:17

Never tried it, never want to. Looks gross.

I think it's a nostalgia thing, considering many have said they only like the cheap stuff, it'll be the stuff you had as a kid.

Nottherealslimshady · 21/12/2020 00:18

Like proper snowballs taste of NYE eating peanuts and playing pontoon. Most snowballs taste shite but when made like nanas, divine.

mouldygrapes · 21/12/2020 00:20

Not a nostalgia thing for me, didn’t grow up eating it. Only got introduced to it when my cousin’s husband joined the family and couldn’t have Xmas dinner without it. Tasted it for the first time in my 20s and was hooked! In fact I made a roast chicken tonight so I could have copious amounts of bread sauce and cranberry sauce (not having turkey for Xmas this year)

Wingedharpy · 21/12/2020 00:21

@Redyoyo :
DH is a Scot.
I am English.
He introduced me to bread sauce......and Stovies and Cranachan and Skirlies and Haggis etc etc etc
Delicious.

Littlewhitedove2 · 21/12/2020 00:37

It’s absolutely delicious and wouldn’t be Xmas dinner without it. So many flavours abs complements the meat and veg perfectly!

Dee1975 · 21/12/2020 00:39

I love it! (And am from the south!)
Have it most weeks with a roast chicken (and will certainly be having it Friday!)

ChestnutStuffing · 21/12/2020 01:55

Bread sauce is one of those things that really suffers if it isn't made well.

EnPoinsettia · 21/12/2020 01:58
