to not understand the appeal of bread sauce

Just find it weird to put wet bread on your lovely roast dinner...???!!!!

I have a feeling that it might go back to years ago when it was used to 'bulk up' meals with leftover bread... or am I wrong...

Shocked! You need to have this thread removed lol!

Best thing ever - homemade all the way though

Aprilx · 21/12/2020 02:15

I have never tried it, never heard of anyone having it, never seen it on a Christmas menu in a restaurant. I have lived in the north for the first 25 years of my life and the south the other 25 years and it hasn’t made any difference. It looks vile.

sorryforswearing · 21/12/2020 02:30

I love it and so does DS. Always make it though. The packet sort is vile.

wellthatsunusual · 21/12/2020 02:40

I've never had it, wasn't sure what it was until reading this thread, and I've never known anyone else to mention it if we ever chat about cooking Christmas dinner or family traditions. So I've concluded that I don't think it's a thing where I'm from. But I'd be willing to give it a go, I have an open mind!

Out of interest, if you were brought up eating it, is it very much a home cooking thing or if you had a 'Christmas dinner' in a restaurant would bread sauce be served?

Flaxmeadow · 21/12/2020 02:59

Love it and it isn't bland. Spices and herbs are in the recipe. Cloves, bay, nutmeg...

Blacktothepink · 21/12/2020 03:01

🤢 yuck

Flaxmeadow · 21/12/2020 03:03

It's very much a traditional Xmas dinner thing. Home made or from a packet. More at home on Xmas day with dinner than in a restaurant.

WanderingMilly · 21/12/2020 03:23

Bread sauce is the best thing about the Christmas dinner, I'm always sad we have it just once a year. However, properly made bread sauce is thick, tasty and not like wet bread, nor is it like the commercial gloopy stuff that is often served up.....

NeedToKnow101 · 21/12/2020 06:42

I'm really looking forward to my home-made bread sauce now. Can't wait. Love it cold with sprouts and ham etc too. I'm from London.

LastChristmas20 · 21/12/2020 06:51

Yummmm. I love it.

I'm the only one though. So packet stuff for me this year as no point going to the trouble when DH and DC turn their noses up.

cherryunripe · 21/12/2020 06:55

Adore bread sauce. Hot or cold. Couldn't have roast poultry without it.

KatherineJaneway · 21/12/2020 07:00

It was never a thing when I was growing up. Don't fancy the sound of it tbh.

nosswith · 21/12/2020 07:02

Not really keen, OPs suggestion sounds plausible.

Chemenger · 21/12/2020 07:03

@Holothane

I’ve never had it and have never wanted too.
This, I’ve never had the slightest inclination to taste it, even though I make it every year. Never tasted bread and butter pudding either. Both just revolt me for some reason.
LastChristmas20 · 21/12/2020 07:26

@Rosecottage888

Rank! But I do have mint sauce on every roast dinner, whatever the meat Grin
Me too - mint sauce is for on the potatoes and peas! Meat be damned. Wink

Although on Christmas I tend to go a bit heavy with the cranberry and bread sauces so the mint gets a day off.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 21/12/2020 07:28

Proper home made bread sauce is lovely. I thought about knocking it on the head this year as it'll only be DH and me and I'm trying to cut down on the 'trimmings' to avoid waste. But I couldn't face the thought of a Christmas morning that didn't start with me sticking cloves into half an onion.

eurochick · 21/12/2020 07:34

The very thought of it makes me heave. It looks repulsive.

StCharlotte · 21/12/2020 07:40

@NovemberR

It's fabulous. Are you from the South? Everyone I know (North) loves it.

Is it a regional thing, maybe? Cos we were fed it regularly as kids. It goes brilliantly with sausage, mash and yorkshire pudding. I suspect it was to bulk things out, but I love it.

It's not a fucking regional thing!

I'm Surrey born and bread (see what I did there? Grin) and I've been known to physically fight a sibling for the last spoonful.

In fact it's the only constituent of Christmas dinner that I've bought so far.

ClinkyMonkey · 21/12/2020 07:41

I'm pretty sure it's not a thing in NI, unless I'm missing something. Now I want to try it and see where I stand in the debate!

OxanaVorontsova · 21/12/2020 07:41

We always had it growing up (in Gloucestershire) DH loves it (a northerner) so we will be having it but I’m not a huge fan.

mollscroll · 21/12/2020 07:44

I love it. I also love the ritual of making it - sticking cloves in an onion and simmering it in milk. Makes me feel like Mrs Beaton. Best thing on the plate on the 25th.

I also love marzipan and will fight you on that too Grin

passthemustard · 21/12/2020 07:54

Oh god, I love bread sauce 😲

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/12/2020 08:15

I asked this last night, but all the people who hate bread sauce were too busy saying Boak and posting Envy to answer. So here goes again.

I love bread sauce. People who think it's gross, do you think that about white sauce, bechamel, cheese sauce etc, which are very similar? Milk thickened with flour, or milk thickened with bread, made from flour.

Genuine question. Every single year on MN when this subject comes up people object to the appearance of bread sauce, when to me it looks very like bechamel, and has a very similar taste and mouthfeel. Given how many people will be having cauliflower cheese with their Christmas dinner, why is that OK and bread sauce isn't?

I didn't grow up with bread sauce and had neve had it until a few years ago when I thought I'd give it a go. It's very easy to make. My daughter and I love it now, so I make it every year. As others have said, it's excellent in sandwiches.

Caramel81 · 21/12/2020 08:18

Is it an English thing as I grew up in Scotland and never tried it until I moved to the midlands. It’s my DP’s favourite part of a Christmas roast. I don’t mind a small amount but don’t really see the appeal

PearlescentIridescent · 21/12/2020 08:21

I wait all damn year for my bread sauce YABVU
