to not understand the appeal of bread sauce

Just find it weird to put wet bread on your lovely roast dinner...???!!!!

I have a feeling that it might go back to years ago when it was used to 'bulk up' meals with leftover bread... or am I wrong...

@Canwecancel2020

Either a southern thing or a posh thing?
Liverpool - hard up single parent family in the 70's - always had bread sauce - I LOVE it - I eat it cold with the leftovers.
QuietlyExcited · 20/12/2020 22:27

Proper homemade bread sauce is delicious. Heat a peeled onion, chopped in half and studded with 6 cloves, in a pan of milk, with a large bay leaf, until just starting to boil (milk should just cover the onion half). Remove from heat and allow to cool. Strain the milk into a separate bowl and add a large knob of butter and enough breadcrumbs (homemade) to form a thick sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Can be stored in the fridge for a couple of days and reheated when needed, adding more milk/butter as necessary.

DH is from North Yorkshire and absolutely loves it!

Superstardjs · 20/12/2020 22:28

I'm not Southern. My GM was a stickler for the correct sauce to go with each meat, so that is what we always had with turkey and (not always) chicken. She wasn't 'posh' but she did like things done just so.

partyatthepalace · 20/12/2020 22:29

I adore it, packet or fresh, needs to be well seasoned though. I am from the South, and have only ever had it to go w chicken/Turkey which I think is what’s traditional - don’t think it is to bulk, but to add moisture/seasoning.

Never heard of having it with sausage/mash/Yorks puddings, and find that quite a weird idea.

I think if you didn’t grow up w if it sounds strange - like the bread in summer or autumn pudding (also delicious!)

Try it! (But not w sausages and mash..)

nextdoorshush · 20/12/2020 22:29

its the main part of xmas dinner that I'm looking forward to Grin

Roussette · 20/12/2020 22:29

It's food of the gods as far as I'm concerned. Love it.

But only make my own.

AlbertCampion · 20/12/2020 22:30

I absolutely love it. We have it with every chicken roast as well as Christmas dinner and I sometimes have it with sausages. It is also delicious cold with bubble and squeak on Boxing Day.

HazelBite · 20/12/2020 22:30

Food of the gods!

We went to a hotel for Xmas lunch one year it was ruined for me as they didn't serve bread sauce.

I even have to make gluten free bread sauce for DIL (now that's tricky)

VinylDetective · 20/12/2020 22:30

@TheSmallAssassin

I love it. In fact I'm wondering now why we don't have it with roast chicken all year round. I also like leftover bread sauce in my turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce and stuffing.
We do have it year round with roast chicken. It’s the food of the gods. I can eat it by itself.
Al1langdownthecleghole · 20/12/2020 22:30

Love it. Made my breadcrumbs ready earlier today to use straight from the freezer. infuse milk with Bay, clove, onion & peppercorn, add butter, breadcrumbs and cream, season & serve.

Rachetine · 20/12/2020 22:31

OP you are being SO unreasonable that I am frightened for you.

It’s bread. In sauce form. There are no flaws here. Do you also dislike Nutella??

shakes head sadly

thenightsky · 20/12/2020 22:31

@TheGlitterFairy

Northern here and can’t stand it!
Yeah. Me too.
Cam2020 · 20/12/2020 22:31

It's disgusting but DP loves it!

Rosecottage888 · 20/12/2020 22:32

Rank! But I do have mint sauce on every roast dinner, whatever the meat Grin

Tavannach · 20/12/2020 22:32

Bread sauce. Two words that still give me nightmares.

thebearschairs · 20/12/2020 22:33

@GingerAndTheBiscuits

Best part of Xmas dinner

@GingerAndTheBiscuits

Totally agree. I could have a whole portion to my self

flissity · 20/12/2020 22:33

Like the packet bread sauce the best. I have to serve it warm for half the family and cold for the other half! (Incl me)

Graffitiqueen · 20/12/2020 22:34

Best part of Xmas dinner. Love it.

Leelaseye · 20/12/2020 22:35

Southern here. Never had it. My Mum says it's grim. I've never questioned this. Am I missing out?!

Badoukas · 20/12/2020 22:35

Eugh, it's gross.

Pipandmum · 20/12/2020 22:35

Love it!

thistimelastweek · 20/12/2020 22:35

Turkey and chicken are just vehicles for the bread sauce which is the best part of the meal.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 20/12/2020 22:37

Never had it, never wanted to. It looks revolting. Like baby sick.

SwedishEdith · 20/12/2020 22:38

Is it quite bland? It sounds like the kind of thing you'd knock up for a fussy child.
